Al-Balad

لَآ أُقْسِمُ بِهَـٰذَا ٱلْبَلَدِ

Laaa uqsimu bihaazal balad

But! I Swear by this city!

وَأَنتَ حِلٌّۢ بِهَـٰذَا ٱلْبَلَدِ

Wa anta hillum bihaazal balad

And you are a dweller in this city

وَوَالِدٍ وَمَا وَلَدَ

Wa waalidinw wa maa walad

And (I Swear by) a father and what he begot

لَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ فِى كَبَدٍ

Laqad khalaqnal insaana fee kabad

We have Created the human being weak

أَيَحْسَبُ أَن لَّن يَقْدِرَ عَلَيْهِ أَحَدٌ

Ayahsabu al-lai yaqdira 'alaihi ahad

Does he reckon that no one will ever be able upon him?

يَقُولُ أَهْلَكْتُ مَالًا لُّبَدًا

Yaqoolu ahlaktu maalal lubadaa

He is saying, ‘I have destroyed abundant wealth’

أَيَحْسَبُ أَن لَّمْ يَرَهُۥٓ أَحَدٌ

Ayahsabu al lam yarahooo ahad

Does he reckon that not (even) one sees him (accountable)?

أَلَمْ نَجْعَل لَّهُۥ عَيْنَيْنِ

Alam naj'al lahoo 'aynayn

Have We not Made two eyes for him,

وَلِسَانًا وَشَفَتَيْنِ

Wa lisaananw wa shafatayn

And a tongue and two lips?

وَهَدَيْنَـٰهُ ٱلنَّجْدَيْنِ

Wa hadaynaahun najdayn

And Guided him (to) the two ways?

فَلَا ٱقْتَحَمَ ٱلْعَقَبَةَ

Falaq tahamal-'aqabah

But he does not attempt the uphill road

وَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ مَا ٱلْعَقَبَةُ

Wa maaa adraaka mal'aqabah

And what will make you realise what the uphill road is?

فَكُّ رَقَبَةٍ

Fakku raqabah

Freeing a neck

أَوْ إِطْعَـٰمٌ فِى يَوْمٍ ذِى مَسْغَبَةٍ

Aw it'aamun fee yawmin zee masghabah

Or feeding during a day of starvation

يَتِيمًا ذَا مَقْرَبَةٍ

Yateeman zaa maqrabah

(To) an orphan, possessing relationship

أَوْ مِسْكِينًا ذَا مَتْرَبَةٍ

Aw miskeenan zaa matrabah

Or a poor person with destitution

ثُمَّ كَانَ مِنَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَتَوَاصَوْا۟ بِٱلصَّبْرِ وَتَوَاصَوْا۟ بِٱلْمَرْحَمَةِ

Summa kaana minal lazeena aamanoo wa tawaasaw bissabri wa tawaasaw bilmarhamah

Then he would be from those who believe, and enjoin the patience and enjoin the compassion

أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ أَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْمَيْمَنَةِ

Ulaaa'ika As-haabul maimanah

These are the companions of the right hand

وَٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا هُمْ أَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْمَشْـَٔمَةِ

Wallazeena kafaroo bi aayaatinaa hum as-haabul Mash'amah

And those who disbelieve in Our Signs, they are the companions of the left hand

عَلَيْهِمْ نَارٌ مُّؤْصَدَةٌۢ

Alaihim naarum mu'sadah

Upon them would be a Fire closed over (from all sides)
