Eclipse Sun & Moon Salat for Eclipse (Namaz-e-Ayaat), Tremor, Darkness, Every Fear from Sky

Ali Bin Ibrahim, from his father, from Ibn Mahboub, from Abdullah Bin Sinan, from Ma’rouf Bin Kharabouz, from Al-Hakam Bin Mustawrid, who has said:

Ali Bin Al-Husayn-asws said: ‘From among the sustenance are those which Allah-azwj has Measured out for the people from what their needs are to Him-azwj. The sea (atmosphere) is the one which Allah-azwj Mighty and Majestic has Created to be between the sky and the earth’.

He-asws said: ‘And Allah-azwj has Determined in these the flow (orbit) of the sun and the moon, and the stars, and the planets, and has Determined all of that upon the orbit. Then for every orbit is an Angel with whom there are seventy thousand Angels. So they turn the circle of the orbit. So it is upon their turning that the sun, and the moon, and the stars, and the planets turn along with them (along their respective orbits). So they descend in their station which Allah-azwj Mighty and Majestic has Determined for them. Therein are their days and their nights.

So when the sins of the servants become numerous and Allah-azwj Blessed and High Intends to Reproach them with a Sign from His-azwj Signs, He-azwj Orders the Angel in charge of the orbit to remove the orbit upon which the sun and the moon, and the stars, and the planets flow upon. So that Angel orders the seventy thousand Angels (which are under him) to remove these from their flows’.

He-asws said: ‘So they remove it and the sun becomes in that sea (atmosphere) in which flows in the orbit’. He-asws said: ‘So its light gets obliterated and its colour changes. So, if Allah-azwj Mighty and Majestic Intends to maximise the Sign, He-azwj Obliterates the sun in the sea (atmosphere) upon what Allah-azwj Loves that His-azwj creatures should fear His-azwj Signs’. He-asws said: ‘And that is during the eclipse of the sun’.

He-asws said: ‘And that is similar to what He-azwj Does with the moon’. He-asws said: ‘So if Allah-azwj Intends to End it or Return it back to normal, He-azwj Orders the Angel in charge of the orbit that he should return the orbit back to its normality. So he returns the orbit and the sun goes back to its normality’. He-asws said: ‘So he takes it out from the water (fluid) and it is brownish (dim)’. He-asws said: ‘And the (matter of) the moon is similar to that’.

He (the narrator) said, ‘Then Ali-asws Bin Al-Husayn-asws said: ‘But rather, no one is scared of these two nor is anyone intimidated by these two Signs except the one who was from our-asws Shiites. So if (these Signs) have happened, so be scared to Allah-azwj Mighty and Majestic, then return (Repent) to Him-azwj’.[1]

Salat for Eclipses

Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ‘Amr ibn ‘Uthman from Ali ibn ‘Abd Allah who has said the following:

‘I heard Abu al-Hassan Musa-asws saying, ‘When Ibrahim son of the Messenger of Allah-saww passed away three traditions were established. One tradition is that on that day a sun eclipse took place and people said that it is because of the death of the son of the Messenger of Allah-saww. The Messenger of Allah went on the pulpit, praised Allah and glorified Him, then said: “O people, the Sun and the Moon are two signs of the signs of Allah which move because of His-azwj Command and in obedience to Him-azwj. Their eclipse is not because of the death or life of anyone. If one or both of them eclipse perform Salat for eclipse.” He-saww climbed down the pulpit and performed Salat because of eclipse with the people.’

Ali has narrated from his father and Mohammed ibn ‘lsma’il from al-Fadl ibn Shadhan all from Hammad ibn ‘Isa from Hariz from Zurarah from Mohammed ibn Muslim who has said the following:

‘We once asked Abu Ja’far-asws about Salat because of eclipse. How many Rak’at has it and how we perform it? The Imam-asws said: ‘It has ten Ruku’ and four Sajadat.  Salat commences with Takbir, Ruku’ is performed with Takbir and you raise your head with Takbir, except the fifth Takbir, after which you perform Sajdah and say Allah-azwj Hears those who praise Him-azwj. Say Qunut in every two Rak’at before Ruku’ and prolong Qunut and Ruku’ equal to the time for recitation, Ruku’ and Sajdah. If you finish before it (sun or moon) is cleared, sit down and pray before Allah-azwj until it is cleared. ‘If it clears before you finish Salat, complete the remaining. Make the recitation loud.’ I then asked, ‘How is recitation in this Salat?’

The Imam-asws said: ‘If you recite Surah (a chapter) in every Rak’at, recite al-Fatihah al-Kitab, but if you reduce (forgot while reciting a sura) from (the second) Surah something, then recite from where you had left (forgot from the 2nd Sura) and do not recite al-Fatihah al-Kitab (Chapter one again).’ The Imam-asws said: ‘It is desirable to recite al-Kahf (Chapter 18) and al-Hijr (Chapter 15), unless one is the Imam and is afraid of causing difficulties for people behind him. Your Salat should be in the open, without being covered by a house, if you can do so. Salat because of Sun eclipse should be given more time than that because of Moon eclipse, but Salat because of both is equal in Ruku’ and Sajdah.’[2]

Hammad, from Hareyz, from Zurara and Muhammad Bin Muslim who both said,

‘We said to Abu Ja’far-asws, ‘These (strong) winds and the darkness which occur, should one pray Salāt for it?’ So he-asws said: ‘Every fear of the sky, from a darkness, or a wind, or a terror (earthquake), so pray Salāt for it, Salāt of the eclipse, until it settles’.[3]

Salat of Eclipse when its total is Obligatory even if not seen, if its partial then its not:

Muhammad Bin Yahya, from Ahmad Bin Muhammad, from Ibn Abu Umeyr, from Jameel Bin Darraj,

(It has been narrated) Abu Abdullah-asws having said: ‘A time for Salāt of the eclipse among the timing when it eclipses, (if it occurs) at the emergence of the sun (sunrise), and at its setting (sunset)’. And Abu Abdullah-asws said: ‘It is Obligatory’.[4]

From him, from Muhammad Bin Al-Husayn, from Safwan Bin Yahya, from Al-A’ala Bin Razeyn, from Muhammad Bin Muslim,

(It has been narrated) from one of the two (5th or 6th Imam-asws), said, ‘I asked him-asws about Salāt of the eclipse during a time of the Obligatory (Salāt). So he-asws said: ‘Begin with the Obligatory (Salāt)’. So it was said to him-asws, ‘(Supposing it was) at the time of the night Salāt?’ So he-asws said: ‘Pray the Salāt of the eclipse before the night Salāt’.[5]

From him, from Ahmad Bin Muhammad, from Hammad, from Hareyz, from Zurara and Muhammad Bin Muslim,

(It has been narrated) from Abu Abdullah-asws having said: ‘When the sun is eclipsed totally and it smoulders, and you did not know, then you came to know after that, so upon you is the fulfilment (of the Salāt missed out); and if all of it did not get eclipsed (totally), so there is no fulfilment (of the Salāt missed out) upon you’.

And in another report, ‘(he-asws said): ‘When one knows of the (total) eclipse and forgets to pray Salāt, so upon him would be the fulfilment (of the Salāt missed out); and if he did not know of it, so there is no fulfilment (of the Salāt missed out) upon him. This is when the whole of it is not eclipsed’.[6]

Muhammad Bin yahya, from Imran Bin Musa, from Muhammad Bin Abdul Hameed, from Ali Bin Al-Fazl Al-Wasity who said,

‘I wrote to him-asws, ‘When either the sun or the moon is eclipsed and I am riding, I am not able upon the dismounting’. So he-asws wrote to me: ‘Pray Salāt upon your ride which you are upon’.[7]

Mohammed ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Mohammed from ibn abu ‘Umayr from Jamil ibn Darraj who has said the following:

‘I once asked abu’ Abdullah-asws about the time of Salat because of eclipse at Sunrise and Sunset if it can be performed at such time. Abu’ Abdullah-asws said: ‘It is obligatory.’

It is narrated from him (narrator of previous Hadith) Ahmad ibn Mohammed from Hammad from Hariz from Zurarah and Mohammed ibn Muslim who has said the following:

‘Abu ‘Abdullah-asws has said: ‘When a total Sun eclipse takes place but you do not notice it and come to know about it later, you must perform Qaza’ (compensatory prayer for) Salat (for eclipse), but if it is not a total eclipse, you are not required to perform anything.’

Mohammed ibn Yahya has narrated from ‘Imran ibn Musa from Mohammed ibn ‘Abd al-Majid from Ali ibn al-Fadl al-Wasitiy who has said the following:

‘I once wrote to the Imam-asws asking, ‘If a Sun or Moon eclipse takes place and I am riding and unable to dismount what must I do?  The Imam-asws wrote to me: ‘Perform Salat on your stumper which you ride.’ (Ahadith from Al-Kafi, Vol. 3)
