Reckoning in the Hereafter

Summary:

Reckoning in the Hereafter has to be firmly believed by all believers, as Allah-azwj will Resurrect people from their graves for the accountability of their deeds performed in the world.  Some Ahadith are presented here on, who will need intersession in the Hereafter and how Reckoning will commence including its various stages? The 4th Imam-asws, for example, says: When one submits to us-asws – the Ahl Al-Bayt, Allah-azwj will Safeguard him against the severity of the Day of Reckoning and Grant him security against the great horror on the Day of Judgement’, (e.g., see the Hadith below):

الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ مُعَلَّى بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ مِرْدَاسٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا صَفْوَانُ بْنُ يَحْيَى وَ الْحَسَنُ بْنُ مَحْبُوبٍ عَنْ أَبِي أَيُّوبَ عَنْ أَبِي خَالِدٍ الْكَابُلِيِّ قَالَ سَأَلْتُ أَبَا جَعْفَرٍ ع عَنْ قَوْلِ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ فَآمِنُوا بِاللَّهِ وَ رَسُولِهِ وَ النُّورِ الَّذِي أَنْزَلْنا فَقَالَ يَا أَبَا خَالِدٍ النُّورُ وَ اللَّهِ الْأَئِمَّةُ مِنْ آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ ص إِلَى يَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ وَ هُمْ وَ اللَّهِ نُورُ اللَّهِ الَّذِي أَنْزَلَ وَ هُمْ وَ اللَّهِ نُورُ اللَّهِ فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَ فِي الْأَرْضِ وَ اللَّهِ يَا أَبَا خَالِدٍ لَنُورُ الْإِمَامِ فِي قُلُوبِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ أَنْوَرُ مِنَ الشَّمْسِ الْمُضِيئَةِ بِالنَّهَارِ وَ هُمْ وَ اللَّهِ يُنَوِّرُونَ قُلُوبَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَ يَحْجُبُ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ نُورَهُمْ عَمَّنْ يَشَاءُ فَتُظْلَمُ قُلُوبُهُمْ وَ اللَّهِ يَا أَبَا خَالِدٍ لَا يُحِبُّنَا عَبْدٌ وَ يَتَوَلَّانَا حَتَّى يُطَهِّرَ اللَّهُ قَلْبَهُ وَ لَا يُطَهِّرُ اللَّهُ قَلْبَ عَبْدٍ حَتَّى يُسَلِّمَ لَنَا وَ يَكُونَ سِلْماً لَنَا فَإِذَا كَانَ سِلْماً لَنَا سَلَّمَهُ اللَّهُ مِنْ شَدِيدِ الْحِسَابِ وَ آمَنَهُ مِنْ فَزَعِ يَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ الْأَكْبَرِ

Al-Husayn ibn Muhammad has narrated from Mualla ibn Muhammad from Ali ibn Mirdas who has said that Safwan ibn Yahya and al-Hassan ibn Mahbub have narrated from abu Ayyub from abu Khalid al-Kabuli who said:

‘I asked (Imam) Abu Ja’far-asws about the meaning of the words of Allah-azwj: ‘Those who believe in Allah and His messenger and follow the Noor which is sent down …. ‘ (64:8) ‘The Imam-asws said: ‘O Abu Khalid, I swear by Allah-azwj, it is ‘A’immah-asws from the family of the Holy Prophet-saww up to the Day of Judgement who are called Noor in the above verse. They, I-asws swear by Allah-asws, are the Noor of Allah-azwj whom He-azwj sent down. It is they-asws, I swear by Allah-azwj, who are the Noor of Allah-azwj in the heavens and in the earth. O Abu Khalid, I-asws swear by Allah-azwj, that the Noor of Imam-asws in the hearts of the true believers is brighter than the light of the sun in the midday.

They-asws, I-asws swear by Allah-azwj, give Noor to the hearts of the true believers and Allah-azwj may Block such Noor from reaching the hearts of whomever He-azwj may Will, thus their hearts remain dark. O Abu Khalid, no one believes in our Divine Authority except that unless Allah-azwj Cleanses his heart. Allah-azwj will not Cleanse the heart of a person until he or she will acknowledge our-asws Divine Authority and submits to us-asws. When one submits to us-asws Allah-azwj will Safeguard him against the severity of the Day of Reckoning and Grant him security against the great horror on the Day of Judgement’.[1]

The denouncer of the enemies of Ahl Al-Bayt-asws will have easy Reckoning:

قَالَ عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَاصِمٍ فَأَهْوَيْتُ عَلَى الْأَقْدَامِ كُلِّهَا فَقَبَّلْتُهَا وَ قَبَّلْتُ يَدَ الْإِمَامِ ع وَ قُلْتُ لَهُ إِنِّي عَاجِزٌ عَنْ نُصْرَتِكُمْ بِيَدِي وَ لَيْسَ أَمْلِكُ غَيْرَ مُوَالَاتِكُمْ وَ الْبَرَاءَةِ مِنْ أَعْدَائِكُمْ وَ اللَّعْنِ لَهُمْ فِي خَلَوَاتِي فَكَيْفَ حَالِي يَا سَيِّدِي فَقَالَ ع حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي عَنْ جَدِّي رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ص قَالَ مَنْ ضَعُفَ عَلَى نُصْرَتِنَا أَهْلَ الْبَيْتِ وَ لَعَنَ فِي خَلَوَاتِهِ أَعْدَاءَنَا بَلَّغَ اللَّهُ صَوْتَهُ إِلَى جَمِيعِ الْمَلَائِكَةِ فَكُلَّمَا لَعَنَ أَحَدُكُمْ أَعْدَاءَنَا صَاعَدَتْهُ الْمَلَائِكَةُ وَ لَعَنُوا مَنْ لَا يَلْعَنُهُمْ فَإِذَا بَلَغَ صَوْتُهُ إِلَى الْمَلَائِكَةِ اسْتَغْفَرُوا لَهُ وَ أَثْنَوْا عَلَيْهِ وَ قَالُوا اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى رُوحِ عَبْدِكَ هَذَا الَّذِي بَذَلَ فِي نُصْرَةِ أَوْلِيَائِهِ جُهْدَهُ وَ لَوْ قَدَرَ عَلَى أَكْثَرَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ لَفَعَلَ فَإِذَا النِّدَاءُ مِنْ قِبَلِ اللَّهِ تَعَالَى يَقُولُ يَا مَلَائِكَتِي إِنِّي قَدْ أحببت [أَجَبْتُ‏] دُعَاءَكُمْ فِي عَبْدِي هَذَا وَ سَمِعْتُ نِدَاءَكُمْ وَ صَلَّيْتُ عَلَى رُوحِهِ مَعَ أَرْوَاحِ الْأَبْرَارِ وَ جَعَلْتُهُ مِنَ الْمُصْطَفَيْنَ الْأَخْيارِ

Ali ibn Asim has said, as part of a longer tradition, I fell down on each of ‘Holy Images’, the footprints of Masomeen-asws and kissed them, I then kissed the hands of the Imam (Hassan Al-Askari-asws) and said: Master-asws! I am not in a position to physically support your-asws cause but I, in my solitude, praise you-asws and disavow your enemies-laPlease inform me about my reckoning (in the Hereafter)?

Imam-asws replied: ‘I narrate to you a hadith of our grandfather, Prophet of Allah-saww who said: ‘The one who cannot extend support to Ahl Al-Bayt-asws but instead denounces their-asws enemies in his solitude, Allah-azwj Transmits his supplications to all His-azwj angels-as.  They-as also join him in sending ‘Laan’ on the enemies (of Ahl Al-Bayt-asws) and they curse those who refrain from sending ‘Laan’ on the enemies-la of Ahl Al-Bayt-asws.

When his voice reaches the angels, they-as ask forgiveness for him and praise him and plead to Allah-azwj to bless the spirit of his-azwj servant, who has made an effort in support of Your‑azwj allies-asws, if he were capable of doing more, he, surely, would have supported them-asws more strenuously.

Then (on the day of reckoning) a ‘Call’ comes from Allah-azwj: O My-azwj Angels! I-azwj have Answered your prayers in favour of My-azwj slave.  I-azwj have Sent blessing to his soul along with the spirits of the righteous ones.  I-azwj have also included him in the company of My-azwj righteous ones.[2]

All will require the Intercession of Ahl Al-Bayt-asws:

حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ مَحْبُوبٍ عَنْ أَبِي أَيُّوبَ عَنْ بُرَيْدٍ الْعِجْلِيِّ قَالَ: سَأَلْتُ أَبَا جَعْفَرٍ ع عَنْ قَوْلِ اللَّهِ‏ وَ عَلَى الْأَعْرافِ رِجالٌ يَعْرِفُونَ كُلًّا بِسِيماهُمْ‏ قَالَ أُنْزِلَتْ فِي هَذِهِ الْأُمَّةِ وَ الرِّجَالُ هُمُ الْأَئِمَّةُ مِنْ آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ

It is narrated to us by Ahmad Bin Muhammad, from Al Hassan Bin Mahboub, from Abu Ayoub, from Bureyd Al Ijaly who said,

‘I asked Abu Ja’far-asws about Words of Allah-azwj: And upon the heights would be men recognising all by their marks [7:46]. He-asws said: ‘It was Revealed regarding this community, and the ‘men’, they-asws are the Imam-asws from Progeny-asws of Muhammad-saww’.

قُلْتُ فَالْأَعْرَافُ قَالَ صِرَاطٌ بَيْنَ الْجَنَّةِ وَ النَّارِ فَمَنْ شَفَعَ لَهُ الْأَئِمَّةُ مِنَّا مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ الْمُذْنِبِينَ نَجَا وَ مَنْ لَمْ يَشْفَعُوا لَهُ هَوَى

I said, ‘So (what about) ‘the heights’?’ He-asws said: ‘A bridge (pathway) between the Paradise and the Fire. The ones from the Momineen sinners for whom the Imams-asws from us-asws intercede, would attain salvation, and one they do not intercede for, would collapse’’.[3]

ثُمَّ قَالَ مَا أَحَدٌ مِنَ الْأَوَّلِينَ وَ الْآخِرِينَ إِلَّا وَ هُوَ مُحْتَاجٌ‏ إِلَى‏ شَفَاعَةِ مُحَمَّدٍ ص يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ

Then he-asws (Imam Mohammed Baqir-asws) said: ‘There is no one from the former ones and the latter ones except he would be needy to the intercession of Muhammad-saww on the Day of Judgement’. (An extract – Ahadith in the latter section).[4]

(Note: once a believer is interceded for, he will intercede for others, see the note below)[5]

The following Hadith, clarifies why we would be needy of the intercession on the Day of Judgement, as most of our deeds are not accepted due to the deficiencies.

عَنْهُ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ ابْنِ فَضَّالٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ أَبِي حَمْزَةَ الثُّمَالِيِّ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع يَقُولُ‏ لَوْ كُشِفَ الْغِطَاءُ عَنِ النَّاسِ فَنَظَرُوا إِلَى وَصْلِ مَا بَيْنَ اللَّهِ وَ بَيْنَ الْمُؤْمِنِ خَضَعَتْ لِلْمُؤْمِنِ رِقَابُهُمْ وَ تَسَهَّلَتْ لَهُ أُمُورُهُمْ وَ لَانَتْ طَاعَتُهُمْ وَ لَوْ نَظَرُوا إِلَى مَرْدُودِ الْأَعْمَالِ مِنَ السَّمَاءِ لَقَالُوا مَا يَقْبَلُ‏ اللَّهُ‏ مِنْ‏ أَحَدٍ عَمَلًا.

From him, from his father, from Ibn Fazaal, from Muhammad, from Abu Hamza Al Sumaly, said,

‘I heard Abu Abdullah-asws saying: ‘If only the covering would be uncovered from the people, they would (be able to) look at what transpires between Allah-azwj and the Believer. The necks of the Believers Fastened, and their affairs being Caused to be easy, and their obedience Made to be known.

And if the people were to look at the repelling of the deeds from the sky they would be saying, ‘Allah-azwj does not Accept the deeds from anyone’.[6]

So, all of from believer will seek intercession and for that Allah-azwj have Made Mohammad‑saww and Allay (progeny) Mohammed-asws the owner of the Paradise and Hell Fire – as per the Mashiya (Will) of Allah-azwj, who will be interceding for believers and are our guarantors, for example:

قَدْ ضَمِنَّا لَكُمُ الْجَنَّةَ بِضَمَانِ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ وَ ضَمَانِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ (صلى الله عليه وآله) وَ اللَّهِ مَا عَلَى دَرَجَةِ الْجَنَّةِ أَكْثَرُ أَرْوَاحاً مِنْكُمْ فَتَنَافَسُوا فِي فَضَائِلِ الدَّرَجَاتِ أَنْتُمُ الطَّيِّبُونَ وَ نِسَاؤُكُمُ الطَّيِّبَاتُ كُلُّ مُؤْمِنَةٍ حَوْرَاءُ عَيْنَاءُ وَ كُلُّ مُؤْمِنٍ صِدِّيقٌ وَ لَقَدْ قَالَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ (عليه السلام) لِقَنْبَرٍ يَا قَنْبَرُ أَبْشِرْ وَ بَشِّرْ وَ اسْتَبْشِرْ فَوَ اللَّهِ لَقَدْ مَاتَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ (صلى الله عليه وآله) وَ هُوَ عَلَى أُمَّتِهِ سَاخِطٌ إِلَّا الشِّيعَةَ

We-asws have taken your responsibility for the Paradise on the Guarantee of Allah-azwj Mighty and Majestic, and the guarantee of the Rasool Allah-saww. By Allah-azwj! There are no Levels of the Paradise where there are more Spirits than yours, so compete for the higher Levels. You are the good ones and your women are the good ones. Every Believing woman is a virgin Hourie and every Believer is a Truthful one. And Amir Al-Momineen-asws has said to Qanbar: ‘Receive good news, rejoice with the good news, and convey the good news, for, by Allah-azwj, the Rasool Allah-saww passed away while he-saww was angry with his-saww community except for the Shiites’ (An extract).[7]

قَالَ أَبَانٌ قَالَ سُلَيْمٌ وَ سَمِعْتُ عَلِيَّ بْنَ أَبِي طَالِبٍ ع يَقُول‏

يُحَاسَبُونَ مِنْهُمْ مَنْ يُغْفَرُ لَهُ وَ يُدْخِلُهُ الْجَنَّةَ بِالْإِقْرَارِ وَ التَّوْحِيدِ وَ مِنْهُمْ مَنْ يُعَذَّبُ فِي النَّارِ ثُمَّ يَشْفَعُ لَهُ الْمَلَائِكَةُ وَ الْأَنْبِيَاءُ وَ الْمُؤْمِنُونَ فَيَخْرُجُونَ مِنَ النَّارِ وَ يَدْخُلُونَ الْجَنَّةَ فَيُسَمَّوْنَ فِيهَا الجهنميون [الْجَهَنَّمِيِّينَ‏] مِنْهُمْ أَصْحَابُ الْإِقْرَارِ وَ لَيْسَتِ الْمَوَازِينُ وَ الْحِسَابُ إِلَّا عَلَيْهِمْ لِأَنَّ أَوْلِيَاءَ اللَّهِ الْعَارِفِينَ لِلَّهِ وَ لِرَسُولِهِ وَ الْحُجَّةِ فِي أَرْضِهِ وَ شُهَدَاءَهُ عَلَى خَلْقِهِ الْمُقِرِّينَ لَهُمُ الْمُطِيعِينَ لَهُمْ‏ يَدْخُلُونَ الْجَنَّةَ … بِغَيْرِ حِسابٍ‏ وَ الْمُعَانِدِينَ لَهُمُ الْمُنْذِرِينَ‏ الْمُكَابِرِينَ الْمُنَاصِبِينَ أَعْدَاءَ اللَّهِ يَدْخُلُونَ النَّارَ بِغَيْرِ حِسَابٍ وَ أَمَّا مَا بَيْنَ هَذَيْنِ فَهُمْ جُلُ‏ النَّاسِ‏ وَ هُمْ‏ أَصْحَابُ‏ الْمَوَازِينِ‏ وَ الْحِسَابِ‏ وَ الشَّفَاعَةِ

(Aban narrates that Sulaym said: I heard Ali-asws ibn Abi Talib-asws, say:) They will be reckoned with. Among them will be the one for whom will be Forgiveness and he will be Made to enter the Paradise, due to their acceptance and the Oneness of Allah-azwj, and among them will be the one who will be Punished in the Fire, then there will be intercession for him from the Angels, and the Prophets-as and the Believers. They will be taken out from the Fire and will be made to enter the Paradise. Therein they will be called Hell-dwellers, among whom will be people who accepted, and there is no Scale set up and the Reckoning except for them, because the friends of Allah-azwj, the ones who recognised Allah-azwj (A’arifeen), and friends of His-azwj Messenger-saww, and the Proofs-asws on His-azwj earth and witnesses over His-azwj creation, those who accepted them-asws and obeyed them-asws, will be entering the Paradise without reckoning.

And the obstinate to whom the Warners (Prophets-as) warned, and the arrogant and the Naasibis, the enemies of Allah-azwj will be entering the Fire without Reckoning. But, as for those that are in between these, and they are most of the people, and they are the people of the Scale, and the Reckoning, and the Intercession’ (An extract).[8]

In another Hadith, Imam-asws says:

أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْحُسَيْنِ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنِ الْخَشَّابِ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا بَعْضُ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ خَيْثَمَةَ قَالَ قَالَ لِي أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) يَا خَيْثَمَةُ نَحْنُ شَجَرَةُ النُّبُوَّةِ وَ بَيْتُ الرَّحْمَةِ وَ مَفَاتِيحُ الْحِكْمَةِ وَ مَعْدِنُ الْعِلْمِ وَ مَوْضِعُ الرِّسَالَةِ وَ مُخْتَلَفُ الْمَلَائِكَةِ وَ مَوْضِعُ سِرِّ اللَّهِ وَ نَحْنُ وَدِيعَةُ اللَّهِ فِي عِبَادِهِ وَ نَحْنُ حَرَمُ اللَّهِ الْأَكْبَرُ وَ نَحْنُ ذِمَّةُ اللَّهِ وَ نَحْنُ عَهْدُ اللَّهِ

Ahmad Bin Muhammad, from Muhammad Bin Al Husayn, from Abdullah Bin Muhammad, from Al Khashhab who said, ‘Some of our companions narrated from Khusayma, who said,

‘Abu Abdullah-asws said to me: ‘O Khusayma! We-asws are the tree of Prophet-hood, and the House of Mercy, and keys of the Wisdom, and the Mine of Knowledge, and the receptacle of the Message, and an inter-change of the Angels (where Angels come and go), and a receptacle of the Secrets of Allah-azwj, and we-asws are the depository among His-azwj servants, and we-asws are the Great Sanctity of Allah-azwj, and we-asws are the Guarantee of Allah-azwj, and we-asws Are the Covenant of Allah-azwj.

فَمَنْ وَفَى بِعَهْدِنَا فَقَدْ وَفَى بِعَهْدِ اللَّهِ وَ مَنْ خَفَرَهَا فَقَدْ خَفَرَ ذِمَّةَ اللَّهِ وَ عَهْدَهُ

Therefore, the one who is loyal to our-asws Covenant so is loyal with the Covenant of Allah-azwj, and the one who disregards it, so he has disregarded the Guarantee of Allah-azwj and His-azwj Covenant’.[9]

Deeds, only benefit, if Performed in Accordance with the Sunnah:

Our Deeds are only accepted if performed in accordance with the Sunnah (traditions of Masomeen-asws).

ما، الأمالي للشيخ الطوسي ابْنُ مَخْلَدٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَمْرٍو عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ هِشَامٍ الْمَرْوَزِيِّ عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ عُثْمَانَ عَنْ بَقِيَّةَ عَنْ إِسْمَاعِيلَ الْبَصْرِيِّ يَعْنِي ابْنَ عُلَيَّةَ عَنْ أَبَانٍ عَنْ أَنَسٍ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‏ لَا يُقْبَلُ قَوْلٌ إِلَّا بِعَمَلٍ وَ لَا يُقْبَلُ قَوْلٌ وَ عَمَلٌ إِلَّا بِنِيَّةٍ وَ لَا يُقْبَلُ قَوْلٌ وَ عَمَلٌ وَ نِيَّةٌ إِلَّا بِإِصَابَةِ السُّنَّةِ

(The book) ‘Al Amaali’ of the sheykh Al Tusi – Ibn Makhlad, from Abu Amro, from Muhammad Bin Hisham Al Marouzy, from Yahya Bin Usman, from Baqiya, from Ismail Al Basry, meaning Ibn Ulya, from Aban, from Anas (well-known fabricator) who said,

‘Rasool-Allah-saww said: ‘A word is not Accepted except with deed, nor is a word and deed Accepted except with intention, nor is a word and deed and intention Accepted except by hitting (conducting by) the Sunnah’’.[10]

عَنْهُ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ عَنْ صَفْوَانَ بْنِ يَحْيَى عَنْ إِسْحَاقَ بْنِ غَالِبٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع قَالَ قَالَ: إِنَّ حَبْراً مِنْ أَحْبَارِ بَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ عَبَدَ اللَّهَ حَتَّى صَارَ مِثْلَ الْخِلَالِ فَأَوْحَى اللَّهُ إِلَى نَبِيٍّ مِنْ أَنْبِيَائِهِ فِي زَمَانِهِ قُلْ لَهُ وَ عِزَّتِي وَ جَلَالِي وَ جَبَرُوتِي لَوْ أَنَّكَ عَبَدْتَنِي حَتَّى تَذُوبَ كَمَا تَذُوبُ الْأَلْيَةُ فِي الْقِدْرِ مَا قَبِلْتُ‏ مِنْكَ‏ حَتَّى‏ تَأْتِيَنِي‏ مِنَ‏ الْبَابِ‏ الَّذِي‏ أَمَرْتُكَ‏

From him, from Muhammad Bin Ali, from Safwan Bin Yahya, from Is’haq Bin Ghalib, from;

Abu Abdullah-asws has said: ‘A Priest from the Priests of the Children of Israel worshipped Allah-azwj to the extent that he became like a toothpick. So, Allah-azwj Revealed unto a Prophet-as from His-azwj Prophets-as of that era: “Say to him: “By My-azwj Honour and My-azwj Majesty, and My-azwj Omnipotence! Even if you were to worship Me-azwj until you melt like the melting of the tool in the (melting) pot, I-azwj will not Accept from you until you come to Me-azwj from the Door which I-azwj have Commanded for (through My-azwj Hujjat – the Imam/Prophet)’.[11]

The Scope of the Submission to a Wali from Allah-azwj:

Amir Al-Momineen-asws says, while introducing the qualities and scope of a ‘Wali’ (Wilayah of a Divine Imam-asws) to one of his-asws companions named ‘Tariq’ in a sermon:

فَهِيَ مَرْتَبَةٌ لَا يَنَالُهَا إِلَّا مَنِ اخْتَارَهُ اللَّهُ وَ قَدَّمَهُ وَ وَلَّاهُ وَ حَكَّمَهُ فَالْوَلَايَةُ هِيَ حِفْظُ الثُّغُورِ وَ تَدْبِيرُ الْأُمُورِ وَ تَعْدِيدُ الْأَيَّامِ وَ الشُّهُورِ

The Imamate is a station that none can reach except those whom Allah-azwj has Chosen and has Given them precedence (over others), investing them with the authority to Rule and to Judge (on behalf of Allah-azwj). Thus, ‘Wilayah’ is no other than safeguarding people from danger and disaster and the management of their all affairs, (even down to) demarcating (defining) the days and months.[12]

Guarantee of Rasool Allah-saww for the Zair (Visitor of the Holy Shrines):

أَبُو عَلِيٍّ الْأَشْعَرِيُّ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْجَبَّارِ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سِنَانٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ رَفَعَهُ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) يَا عَلِيُّ مَنْ زَارَنِي فِي حَيَاتِي أَوْ بَعْدَ مَوْتِي أَوْ زَارَكَ فِي حَيَاتِكَ أَوْ بَعْدَ مَوْتِكَ أَوْ زَارَ ابْنَيْكَ فِي حَيَاتِهِمَا أَوْ بَعْدَ مَوْتِهِمَا ضَمِنْتُ لَهُ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ أَنْ أُخَلِّصَهُ مِنْ أَهْوَالِهَا وَ شَدَائِدِهَا حَتَّى أُصَيِّرَهُ مَعِي فِي دَرَجَتِي

Abu Ali Al Ashary, from Muhammad Bin Abdul Jabbar, from Muhammad Bin Sinan, from Muhammad Bin Ali, raising it, said,

‘Rasool-Allah-saww said: ‘O Ali-asws! The one who performs my-saww Ziyarah during my-saww lifetime and after my-saww passing away, or your-asws Ziyarah during your-asws lifetime or after your-asws passing away, or a Ziyarah of your-asws two sons-asws during their-asws lifetime or after their-asws passing away, I-saww guarantee for him that on the Day of Judgement I-saww shall relieve him from the terrors (of the Day) and his difficulties until I-saww make him to arrive with me-asws into his Levels (reserved in the Paradise)’.[13]

A Sinner Momin Interceded by Ali Amir Al-Momineen-asws:

عن النبي صلى الله عليه وآله قال: أما إن من شيعة علي عليه السلام لمن يأتي يوم القيامة وقد وضع له في كفة سيئاته من الآثام ما هو أعظم من الجبال الرواسي و البحار السيارة، تقول الخلائق: هلك هذا العبد، فلا يشكون أنه من الهالكين وفي عذاب الله من الخالدين،

From the Prophet-saww having said: ‘But, from the Shias of Ali-asws would be the one who would come on the Day of Judgment, and there would be placed for him in the scale of his evil deeds from the sins what is greater than the mountain peaks and the waves of the ocean. The creatures would be saying, ‘This servant is destroyed. There is no doubt he is from the destroyed ones, and would be from the eternal ones in the Punishment of Allah-azwj.

فيأتيه النداء من قبل الله تعالى: يا أيها العبد الجاني هذه الذنوب الموبقات فهل بإزائها حسنة تكافئها وتدخل الجنة برحمة الله، أو تزيد عليها فتدخلها بوعد الله، يقول العبد: لا أدري،

Then, there would come a call from Allah-azwj Mighty and Majestic: “O you servant, the wrong-doer, the offender! These are major sins (upon you). So, are there, in their stead, any good deeds to suffice these, so you can enter the Paradise of Allah-azwj by the Mercy of Allah-azwj, or an increase upon these (good deeds), so you can enter it?” The servant would be saying, ‘I don’t know’.

فيقول منادي ربنا عزوجل: إن ربي يقول: ناد في عرصات القيامة: ألا إن فلان بن فلان من بلد كذا وكذا وقرية كذا وكذا قد رهن بسيئاته كأمثال الجبال والبحار ولا حسنة بازائها، فأي أهل هذا المحشر كانت لي عنده يد أو عارفة فليغثني بمجازاتي عنها، فهذا أوان شدة حاجتي إليها

So, the caller of our Lord-azwj Mighty and Majestic would call out: ‘My Lord-azwj is saying: “Call out in the plains of the Day of Judgment, ‘I am so and so from the people of such and such city. I have been mortgaged by evils deeds which are like the mountain and the sea and there are no good deeds for me in my account. So, which one the people of this plain who has a hand (of favour) for me, or knows me, so let him help me with my being rescued from it, for this is the time of my most intense need to it’.

فينادي الرجل بذلك، فأول من يجيبه علي بن أبي طالب: لبيك لبيك لبيك أيها الممتحن في محبتي، المظلوم بعداوتي،

So, the man would call out with that, and the first one who answer him would be Ali-asws Bin Abu Talib-asws: ‘Here I-asws am! Here I-asws am, O you, the one being tried regarding my-asws love, the one oppressed by my-asws enemies’.

ثم يأتي هو ومن معه عدد كثير وجم غفير و إن كانوا أقل عددا من خصمائه الذين لهم قبله الظلامات

Then he-asws would come, and with him-asws would be a large number and a myriad (of people), and even though they would be fewer in number than his-asws disputants – those who had grievances before him-asws.

فيقول ذلك العدد: يا أمير المؤمنين نحن إخوانه المؤمنون، كان بنابارا ولنا مكرما، وفى معاشرته إيانا مع كثرة إحسانه إلينا متواضعا، وقد نزلنا له عن جميع طاعاتنا وبذلناها له

So, that number would be saying, ‘O Amir Al-Momineen-asws! We are his brothers, the Momineen. He was righteous with us, and he was honourable to us, and in his community, he was assisting us along with a lot of his favours to us, he was modest, and we have brought down for him the entirety of our acts of obedience and make it to be for him’.

فيقول علي عليه السلام: فبماذا تدخلون جنة ربكم ؟ فيقولون: برحمة الله الواسعة التي لا يعدمها من والاك ووالى آلك يا أخا رسول الله

(At that), Ali-asws would be saying: ‘Then by what would you be entering the Paradise of your Lord-azwj?’ They would be saying, ‘By His-azwj Mercy, the Capacious, which there is no remoteness from the one who loves you-asws and befriends your-asws friends, O brother-asws of Rasool-Allah-saww!’.

فيأتي النداء من قبل الله تعالى: يا أخا رسول الله هؤلاء إخوانه المؤمنون قد بذلوا له فأنت ماذا تبذل له ؟ فإني أنا الحكم، ما بيني وبينه من الذنوب قد غفرتها له بموالاته إياك، وما بينه وبين عبادي من الظلامات فلا بد من فصلي بينه وبينهم

So, a call would come from Allah-azwj Mighty and Majestic: “O brother-asws of Rasool-Allah-saww! These are your-asws brothers, the Momineen. They have made it to be for him (what could rescue him), so what is that which you-asws are making it to be for him, for I-azwj am the Judge of what is between Me-azwj and him, from the sins which I-azwj have Forgiven for him due to his being in your-asws Wilayah, and whatever is between him and My-azwj servants from the wrongs, so it is inevitable from the Judgmental decision between him and them”.

فيقول علي عليه السلام: يا رب أفعل ما تأمرني

Ali-asws would be saying: ‘O Lord-azwj! I-asws will do whatever You-azwj Command me-asws to’.

فيقول الله: يا علي اضمن لخصمائه تعويضهم عن ظلاماتهم قبله

Allah-azwj Mighty and Majestic would be Saying: “O Ali-asws! Guarantee to his disputants that you-asws would be compensating them for his wrongdoings upon them”.

فيضمن لهم علي عليه السلام ذلك ويقول لهم: اقترحوا علي ما شئتم اعطكم عوضا من ظلاماتكم قبله،

Ali-asws would be guaranteeing that to them and he-asws would be saying to them: ‘Suggest to me-asws whatever you so desire to, I-asws shall give it to you instead for the wrongdoings from him’.

فيقولون: يا أخا رسول الله تجعل لنا بإزاء ظلامتنا قبله ثواب نفس من أنفاسك ليلة بيتوتتك على فراش محمد صلى الله عليه وآله،

They would be saying, ‘O brother-asws of Rasool-Allah-saww! (We want) you-asws to make it to be for us, as a compensation of his wrongdoings to us, the Rewards of one breath of your-asws breathing on the night you-asws spent upon the bed of Muhammad-saww, (the night of Hijra)’.

فيقول علي عليه السلام: قد وهبت ذلك لكم،

Ali-asws would be saying: ‘I-asws have gifted that to you all’.

فيقول الله عزوجل: فانظروا يا عبادي الآن إلى ما نلتموه من علي، فداء لصاحبه من ظلاماتكم، ويظهر لهم ثواب نفس واحد في الجنان من عجائب قصورها وخيراتها، فيكون ذلك ما يرضي الله به خصماء اولئك المؤمنين

So, Allah-azwj Mighty and Majestic would be Saying: “Look now, O My-azwj servants, at what you have attained from Ali-asws Bin Abu Talib-asws, as expiation for the wrongdoings of your companion on you!”. And there would be displayed for them, the Rewards of one breath (of Ali-asws), in the Gardens, from its wonderful castles and its goodness(es). Thus, there would be happen to be from that, what Allah-azwj would Please them with – the disputants to those Momineen.

ثم يريهم بعد ذلك من الدر جات والمنازل مالا عين رأت، ولا اذن سمعت، ولا خطر على بال بشر

Then, after that, they would be shown from the levels and the stations – that which neither has an eye seen, nor has an ear heard, nor has the mind of a human conceived of.

يقولون: يا ربنا هل بقي من جنانك شئ ؟ إذا كان هذا كله لنا فأين تحل سائر عبادك المؤمنين والانبياء والصديقون والشهداء والصالحون ؟ ويخيل إليهم عند ذلك أن الجنة بأسرها قد جعلت لهم

They would be saying, ‘O our Lord-azwj! Does there remain anything from Your-azwj paradise (for anybody else), when it was so that all of this is for us? So, whereabouts would Your-azwj servants, the Momineen, and the Prophets-as, and the truthful, and the martyrs, and the righteous would be?’ And they would be thinking during that, that the Paradise in its entirety has been Made to be for them (only).

فيأتي النداء من قبل الله تعالى: يا عبادي هذا ثواب نفس من أنفاس علي بن أبي طالب الذي اقترحتموه عليه قد جعله لكم فخذوه وانظروا

(At that), a call would come from Allah-azwj Mighty and Majestic: “O My-saww servants! This is the Reward of one breath from the breathing of Ali-asws Bin Abu Talib-asws which you had suggested to him-asws. He-asws has made it to be for you all. Therefore, take it and look around!”

فيصيرون هم وهذا المؤمن الذي عوضه علي عليه السلام في تلك الجنان ثم يرون ما يضيفه الله عزوجل إلى ممالك علي عليه السلام في الجنان ما هو أضعاف ما بذله عن وليه الموالي له مما شاء من الاضعاف التي لا يعرفها غيره

So, they would be coming – them and this Momin whom Ali-asws compensated on his behalf, to those Gardens. Then they would be seeing what Allah-azwj Mighty and Majestic has Added to the kingdoms of Ali-asws in the Garden, what would be a multiple of what he-asws made to be on behalf of his-asws friend, to the friends of his-asws, from whatever Allah-azwj Mighty and Majestic so Desires, from the additions which none knows apart from Him-azwj’.

ثم قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله: أذلك خيرنزلا أم شجرة الزقوم المعدة لمخالفي أخي ووصيي علي بن أبي طالب عليه السلام ؟

Then Rasool-Allah-saww said: ‘Is that a better lodgement or the tree of Zaqqum? [37:62] – The (lodgement) prepared for the adversaries of my-saww brother-asws, and my-saww successor Ali‑asws Bin Abu Talib-asws’’.[14]

How Reckoning will take place:

Finally, we review, how reckoning will be carried out, and its stages.

The first and main subject matter of the Questioning

عَنِ الشَّعْبِيِّ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ‏: فِي قَوْلِهِ تَعَالَى‏ وَ قِفُوهُمْ إِنَّهُمْ مَسْؤُلُونَ‏ قَالَ عَنْ وَلَايَةِ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ ع

From Al Shaby, from Ibn Abbas,

‘Regarding the Words of the Exalted: And stop them! They have to be Questioned [37:24]. He said, ‘About the Wilayah of Ali-asws Bin Abu Talib-asws’’.[15]

وَ بِهَذَا الْإِسْنَادِ عَنْ أَبِي مُحَمَّدٍ الْفَحَّامِ قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الْفَضْلِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ هَاشِمٍ الْهَاشِمِيُّ صَاحِبُ الصَّلَاةِ بِسَامَرَّاءَ قَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي هَاشِمٌ الْهَاشِمِيُّ صَاحِبُ الصَّلَاةِ بِسُرَّمَنْ‏رَأَى قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو هَاشِمِ بْنُ الْقَاسِمِ قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ زَكَرِيَّا بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الْجَوْهَرِيُّ الْبَصْرِيُّ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الْمُثَنَّى بْنِ تُمَامَةَ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ جَدِّهِ

And by this chain, from Abu Muhammad Al Fahham, from Abu Al Fazl Muhammad Bin Hashim Al Hashimy, the prayer at Samarrah, from Abu Hashim Al Hashimy the prayer leader at Sur Man Rayy, from Abu Hashim Bin Al Qasim, from Muhammad Bin Zakariyya Bin Abdullah Al Jowhary Al Basry, from Abdullah Bin Al Musna Bin Tumama Bin Abdullah Bin Anas Bin Malik, from his father, from his grandfather,

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ص قَالَ: إِذَا كَانَ يَوْمُ الْقِيَامَةِ وَ نُصِبَ الصِّرَاطُ عَلَى جَهَنَّمَ لَمْ يَجُزْ عَلَيْهِ إِلَّا مَنْ كَانَ مَعَهُ جَوَازٌ فِيهِ بِوَلَايَةِ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ ع وَ ذَلِكَ قَوْلُهُ تَعَالَى‏ وَ قِفُوهُمْ إِنَّهُمْ مَسْؤُلُونَ‏ يَعْنِي عَنْ وَلَايَةِ أَمِيرِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ عَلَيْهِ وَ عَلَى ذُرِّيَّتِهِ أَفْضَلُ الصَّلَاةِ وَ السَّلَامِ

From the Prophet-saww having said: ‘When it will be the Day of Judgment and the Bridge is set up upon Hell, none would be allowed to cross over it except the one who had with him a permit wherein is the Wilayah of Ali Bin Abu Talib-asws, and these are the Words of Allah-azwj the Exalted: And stop them! They have to be Questioned [37:24], Meaning about the Wilayah of Amir Al-Momineen Ali Bin Abu Talib-asws, may the most superior of the Salawaat and the greetings be upon him-asws and upon his-asws offspring’.[16]

حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ الْغَزَالِيِّ حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ فُضَيْلٍ عَنْ غَزْوَانَ أَخْبَرَنَا عَطَاءُ بْنُ السَّائِبِ عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ

It was narrated to us by Ismail Bin Al Ghazaly, from Muhammad Bin Fuzayl, from Gazwan, from Ata’a Bin Al Saib, from Saeed Bin Jubeyr, from Ibn Abbas who said,

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‏: إِذَا كَانَ يَوْمُ الْقِيَامَةِ أَقِفُ أَنَا وَ عَلِيُّ بْنُ أَبِي طَالِبٍ عَلَى الصِّرَاطِ بِيَدِ كُلِّ وَاحِدٍ مِنَّا سَيْفٌ فَمَا يَمُرُّ أَحَدٌ إِلَّا سَأَلْنَاهُ عَنْ وَلَايَةِ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ

‘Rasool-Allah-saww said: ‘When it will be the Day of Judgment, I-saww and Ali-asws Bin Abu Talib‑asws would pause upon the Bridge. In the hand of each one of us-asws would be a sword, so no one would pass except we-asws will ask him about the Wilayah of Ali-asws Bin Abu Talib‑asws.

فَمَنْ كَانَتْ مَعَهُ وَ إِلَّا ضَرَبْنَا عُنُقَهُ وَ أَلْقَيْنَاهُ فِي النَّارِ وَ ذَلِكَ قَوْلُهُ تَعَالَى‏ وَ قِفُوهُمْ إِنَّهُمْ مَسْؤُلُونَ‏

So, the one who would have it (fine), or else we-asws would strike his neck and cast him into the Fire, and that is the Speech of the Exalted: And stop them! They have to be Questioned [37:24]’.[17]

وعنه: عن محمد بن عمر الحافظ الجعابي، قال: حدثني عبد الله بن محمد بن سعيد بن زياد من أصل كتابه، قال: حدثنا أبي، قال: حدثنا حفص بن عمر العمري، قال: حدثنا عصام بن طليق، عن أبي هارون، عن أبي سعيد، عن النبي (صلى الله عليه و آله) في قول الله عز و جل: وَ قِفُوهُمْ إِنَّهُمْ مَسْؤُلُونَ، قال: «عن ولاية علي، ما صنعوا في أمره و قد أعلمهم الله عز و جل أنه الخليفة من بعد رسوله»

And from him, from Muhammad Bin Umar Al-Hafiz Al-Ja’any, from Abdullah Bin Muhammad Bin Saeed Bin Ziyad from the originAl-of his book, from his father, from Hafs Bin Umar Al-Amary, from Asaam Bin Taleyq, from Abu Haroun, from Abu Saeed,

‘The Prophet-saww regarding the Words of Allah-azwj Mighty and Majestic: And stop them! They have to be Questioned [37:24], said: ‘About the Wilayah of Ali-asws, what they did regarding his-asws matter, and Allah-azwj Mighty and Majestic had Made it Known to them that he-asws was the Caliph (immediately) after His-azwj Rasool-saww’.[18]

The Questions during the Reckoning

موفق بن أحمد في كتاب (المناقب)، بإسناده عن أبي برزة، قال: قال رسول الله (صلى الله عليه و آله): «لا تزول قدم عبد يوم القيامة حتى يسأله الله تبارك و تعالى عن أربع: عن عمره فيما أفناه، و عن جسده فيما أبلاه، و عن ماله مما كسبه، و فيما أنفقه، و عن حبنا أهل البيت»

Mowfaq Bin Ahmad in the book Al Manaqib, by his chain, from Abu Barzat, said,

‘Rasool-Allah-saww said: The feet of a servant would not move on the Day of Judgment until Allah-azwj Blessed and Exalted Questions him about four (matters) – About his life-time, in what he spent it, and about his body, in what did he indulge it in, and about his wealth, from what did he earn it, and in what did he spend it, and about our-asws love of the People-asws of the Household’.

فقال عمر بن الخطاب: فما آية حبكم من بعدك؟

Umar Bin Khattab said, ‘So what is the sign of (having) your-asws love from after you-saww?

فوضع يده على رأس علي (عليه السلام)- و هو إلى جانبه-، فقال: «إن آية حبي من بعدي: حب هذا، و طاعته طاعتي، و مخالفته مخالفتي»

He-saww placed his-saww hand upon the head of Ali-asws – and he-asws was by his-saww side – and he-saww said: ‘The sign of (having) my-saww loved from after me-saww is (having) the love of this one-asws, and obeying him-asws is obeying me-saww, and opposing him-asws is opposing me-saww’’.[19]

The Reckoning detailed on the Day of Judgment

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‏ أَخْبَرَ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى أَنَّ مَنْ لَا يُؤْمِنُ بِالْقُرْآنِ، فَمَا آمَنَ بِالتَّوْرَاةِ، لِأَنَّ اللَّهَ تَعَالَى أَخَذَ عَلَيْهِمُ الْإِيمَانَ بِهِمَا، لَا يَقْبَلُ الْإِيمَانَ بِأَحَدِهِمَا إِلَّا مَعَ الْإِيمَانِ بِالْآخَرِ

(Imam Hassan Al-Askari-asws said): ‘Rasool-Allah-saww said: ‘Allah-azwj the Exalted Informed that the one who does not believe in the Quran, so he did not believe in the Torah, because Allah-azwj the Exalted Took upon them (an oath) of the Eman in both these. The Eman is not Accepted in one of the two except with the Eman in the other.

فَكَذَلِكَ فَرَضَ اللَّهُ الْإِيمَانَ بِوَلَايَةِ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ ع كَمَا فَرَضَ الْإِيمَانَ بِمُحَمَّدٍ فَمَنْ قَالَ: آمَنْتُ بِنُبُوَّةِ مُحَمَّدٍ وَ كَفَرْتُ بِوَلَايَةِ عَلِيٍّ ع فَمَا آمَنَ بِنُبُوَّةِ مُحَمَّدٍ

Similar to that, Allah-azwj Necessitated the Eman in the Wilayah of Ali-asws Bin Abu Talib-asws, just as He-azwj Necessitated the Eman in Muhammad-saww. So the one who said, ‘I believe in the Prophet-hood and disbelieves in the Wilayah of Ali-asws, so he did not believe in the Prophet-hood of Muhammad-saww’’.

إِنَّ اللَّهَ تَعَالَى إِذَا بَعَثَ الْخَلَائِقَ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ نَادَى مُنَادِي رَبِّنَا- نِدَاءَ تَعْرِيفِ الْخَلَائِقِ‏ فِي إِيمَانِهِمْ وَ كُفْرِهِمْ، فَقَالَ: «اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ، اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ» وَ مُنَادٍ آخَرُ يُنَادِي: «مَعَاشِرَ الْخَلَائِقِ سَاعِدُوهُ عَلَى هَذِهِ الْمَقَالَةِ

Allah-azwj the Exalted, when He-azwj Resurrects the creatures on the Day of Judgment, a caller of our-saww Lord-azwj would call out with a call which would introduce the creatures with regards to their Eman and their Kufr, and he would say: ‘Allah-azwj is the Greatest! Allah-azwj is the Greatest!’ And another caller would call out: ‘Community of people! Support him upon this speech!’

فَأَمَّا الدَّهْرِيَّةُ وَ الْمُعَطِّلَةُ فَيَخْرَسُونَ عَنْ ذَلِكَ- وَ لَا تَنْطَلِقُ‏ أَلْسِنَتُهُمْ، وَ يَقُولُهَا سَائِرُ النَّاسِ مِنَ الْخَلَائِقِ، فَيَمْتَازُ الدَّهْرِيَّةُ [وَ الْمُعَطِّلَةُ] مِنْ سَائِرِ النَّاسِ بِالْخَرْسِ

So, as for the eternalists and the atheists would be muted from that, and their tongues will not speak, and the rest of the people from the creatures would be saying it. Thus, the eternalists and the atheists would be differentiated from the rest of the people by the muteness.

ثُمَّ يَقُولُ الْمُنَادِي: «أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ» فَيَقُولُ الْخَلَائِقُ كُلُّهُمْ ذَلِكَ- إِلَّا مَنْ كَانَ يُشْرِكُ بِاللَّهِ تَعَالَى مِنَ الْمَجُوسِ وَ النَّصَارَى وَ عَبَدَةِ الْأَوْثَانِ فَإِنَّهُمْ يَخْرَسُونَ فَيَبِينُونَ بِذَلِكَ مِنْ سَائِرِ الْخَلَائِقِ

Then the caller would be saying: ‘I testify that there is no god except Allah-azwj!’ So the creatures, all of them would be saying that – except for the one who was associating with Allah-azwj the Exalted, from the Magians, and the Christians, and the worshippers of the idols. Thus, they would be muted, and they would be clarified with that from the rest of the creatures.

ثُمَّ يَقُولُ الْمُنَادِي: «أَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّداً رَسُولُ اللَّهِ» فَيَقُولُهَا الْمُسْلِمُونَ أَجْمَعُونَ وَ يَخْرَسُ عَنْهَا الْيَهُودُ وَ النَّصَارَى وَ سَائِرُ الْمُشْرِكِينَ

Then the caller would be saying: ‘I testify that Muhammad-saww is Rasool-saww of Allah-azwj’. So the Muslims would be saying that in their entirety, and there would be muted from it, the Jews and the Christians, and the rest of the polytheists.

ثُمَّ يُنَادَى مِنْ آخِرِ عَرَصَاتِ الْقِيَامَةِ: أَلَا فَسُوقُوهُمْ إِلَى [الْجَنَّةِ لِشَهَادَتِهِمْ لِمُحَمَّدٍ ص بِالنُّبُوَّةِ] فَإِذَا النِّدَاءُ مِنْ قِبَلِ اللَّهِ تَعَالَى: [لَا، بَلْ‏] وَ قِفُوهُمْ إِنَّهُمْ مَسْؤُلُونَ‏ يَقُولُ الْمَلَائِكَةُ الَّذِينَ قَالُوا «سُوقُوهُمْ إِلَى الْجَنَّةِ لِشَهَادَتِهِمْ لِمُحَمَّدٍ ص بِالنُّبُوَّةِ»: لِمَا ذَا يُوقَفُونَ يَا رَبَّنَا

Then another caller would call out in the plains of the (Day of) Judgment: ‘Indeed! Usher them to the Paradise due to their testifying with the Prophet-hood!’ And there would be a call from Allah-azwj the Exalted: “No! But, And stop them! They have to be Questioned [37:24]”. The Angels, those who said, ‘Usher them to the Paradise due to their testifying with the Prophet-hood!’ would be saying, ‘Due to what are they being paused?’

فَإِذَا النِّدَاءُ مِنْ قِبَلِ اللَّهِ تَعَالَى: [قِفُوهُمْ‏] إِنَّهُمْ مَسْؤُلُونَ‏ عَنْ وَلَايَةِ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ وَ آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ، يَا عِبَادِي وَ إِمَائِي- إِنِّي أَمَرْتُهُمْ مَعَ الشَّهَادَةِ بِمُحَمَّدٍ بِشَهَادَةٍ أُخْرَى، فَإِنْ جَاءُوا بِهَا فَعَظِّمُوا ثَوَابَهُمْ، وَ أَكْرِمُوا مَآبَهُمْ‏ وَ إِنْ لَمْ يَأْتُوا بِهَا لَمْ تَنْفَعْهُمُ الشَّهَادَةُ لِمُحَمَّدٍ ص بِالنُّبُوَّةِ- وَ لَا لِي بِالرُّبُوبِيَّةِ، فَمَنْ جَاءَ بِهَا فَهُوَ مِنَ الْفَائِزِينَ، وَ مَنْ لَمْ يَأْتِ بِهَا فَهُوَ مِنَ الْهَالِكِينَ

So, there would be a call from Allah-azwj the Exalted: “And stop them! They have to be Questioned [37:24]” – about the Wilayah of Ali-asws Bin Abu Talib-asws, and the Progeny-asws of Muhammad-saww. O My-azwj servants and My-azwj maids! I-azwj Commanded them along with the testimony with Muhammad-saww, another testimony. So if they have come with it, then magnify their Rewards and honour their return. And if they have not come with it, the testimony of Muhammad-saww with the Prophet-hood will not benefit them, nor (their testimony for Me-azwj with the Lordship. Therefore, the one who has come with it, so he would be from the successful ones, and the one who did not come with it, so he would be from the destroyed ones!”

قَالَ: فَمِنْهُمْ مَنْ يَقُولُ: قَدْ كُنْتُ لِعَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ بِالْوَلَايَةِ شَاهِداً، وَ لِآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ مُحِبّاً. وَ هُوَ فِي ذَلِكَ كَاذِبٌ يَظُنُّ أَنَّ كَذِبَهُ يُنْجِيهِ، فَيُقَالُ لَهُ: سَوْفَ نَسْتَشْهِدُ عَلَى ذَلِكَ عَلِيّاً. – فَتَشْهَدُ أَنْتَ يَا أَبَا الْحَسَنِ، فَتَقُولُ: الْجَنَّةُ لِأَوْلِيَائِي شَاهِدَةٌ، وَ النَّارُ عَلَى أَعْدَائِي شَاهِدَةٌ

He-asws said: ‘So from them would be one saying, ‘I used to testify with the Wilayah for Ali-asws Bin Abu Talib-asws, and was one who loved the Progeny-asws of Muhammad-saww’, and he would be a liar in that, thinking that his lie would rescue him. But, it would be said to him, ‘Soon you would be testified upon that by Ali-asws (in verification or otherwise)’. So you-asws will be testifying, O Abu Al-Hassan-asws, and you-asws would be saying: ‘The Paradise will testify for my-asws friends, and the Fire would testify against my-asws enemies’.

فَمَنْ كَانَ مِنْهُمْ صَادِقاً- خَرَجَتْ إِلَيْهِ رِيَاحُ الْجَنَّةِ وَ نَسِيمُهَا- فَاحْتَمَلَتْهُ، فَأَوْرَدَتْهُ عَلَالِي الْجَنَّةِ وَ غُرَفَهَا- وَ أَحَلَّتْهُ دَارَ الْمُقَامَةِ مِنْ فَضْلِ رَبِّهِ‏ لَا يَمَسُّهُ فِيهَا نَصَبٌ وَ لَا يَمَسُّهُ فِيهَا لُغُوبٌ‏

Therefore, the one who was truthful from them – winds of Paradise would come out to him and its breezes, and carry him to the lofty gardens and its rooms – and free him in the house of staying from the Grace of his Lord-azwj. Neither will he be touched by the difficulties nor the weariness.

وَ مَنْ كَانَ مِنْهُمْ كَاذِباً- جَاءَتْهُ‏ سَمُومُ النَّارِ وَ حَمِيمُهَا- وَ ظِلُّهَا الَّذِي هُوَ ثَلَاثُ شُعَبٍ‏ لا ظَلِيلٍ- وَ لا يُغْنِي مِنَ اللَّهَبِ‏ فَتَحْمِلُهُ، فَتَرْفَعُهُ فِي الْهَوَاءِ، وَ تُورِدُهُ فِي نَارِ جَهَنَّمَ

And the one from them who was a liar – the toxins of the Fire and its boiling waters would come, a shade of which would be three-pronged, Neither having the coolness of the shade nor availing against the flame [77:31]. So it would carry him and raise him in the air, and place him in the Fire of Hell.

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص: فَلِذَلِكَ أَنْتَ قَسِيمُ [الْجَنَّةِ وَ] النَّارِ، تَقُولُ لَهَا: هَذَا لِي وَ هَذَا لَكِ‏

Rasool-Allah-saww said: ‘Thus, due to that, you-asws are the distributor of the Paradise and the Fire. You-asws would be saying to it: ‘This one is for me-asws, and this one is for you’.[20]

The Passport required at the Bridge (Archway)

أبو الحسن الشاذاني: عن أبي سعيد الخدري، قال: سمعت رسول الله (صلى الله عليه و آله) يقول: «إذا كان يوم القيامة أمر الله تعالى ملكين يقعدان على الصراط، فلا يجوز أحد إلا ببراءة علي بن أبي طالب، و من لم تكن له براءة أمير المؤمنين أكبه الله على منخريه في النار، و ذلك قوله تعالى: وَ قِفُوهُمْ إِنَّهُمْ مَسْؤُلُونَ»

Abu Al-Hassan Al-Shazany, from Abu Saeed Al-Khudry who said,

‘I heard Rasool-Allah-saww saying: ‘When it will be the Day of Judgement, Allah-azwj the High would Command two Angels to be seated upon the Bridge (الصراط). So they would not allow anyone (to pass) except with an approval of Ali-asws Bin Abu Talib-asws. And the one who does not have an approval of Amir-Al-Momineen-asws, Allah-azwj would Have him to be grabbed by his nostrils and flung into the Fire, and these are the Words of the Exalted: And stop them! They have to be Questioned [37:24]’.

قلت: فداك أبي و أمي- يا رسول الله- ما معنى البراءة التي أعطاها علي؟ فقال: «مكتوب: لا إله إلا الله، محمد رسول الله، و أمير المؤمنين علي بن أبي طالب وصي رسول الله»

I said, ‘May my father and my mother be sacrificed for you-saww, O Rasool-Allah-saww! What is the meaning of the ‘approval’ which Ali-asws would be giving out?’ So he-saww said: ‘A written (permit) – ‘There is no god except for Allah-azwj, Muhammad-saww is Rasool-Allah-saww, and Amir-Al-Momineen-asws Ali-asws Bin Abu Talib-asws is the successor-asws of Rasool-Allah-saww’.[21]

الشيخ في (أماليه): عن أبي محمد الفحام، قال: حدثنا أبو الفضل محمد بن هاشم الهاشمي صاحب الصلاة بسر من رأى، قال: حدثنا أبي هاشم بن القاسم، قال: حدثنا محمد بن زكريا بن عبد الله الجوهري البصري، عن عبد الله بن المثنى، عن ثمامة بن عبد الله بن أنس بن مالك، عن أبيه، عن جده، عن النبي (صلى الله عليه و آله)، قال: «إذا كان يوم القيامة، و نصب الصراط على جهنم، لم يجز عليه إلا من معه جواز فيه ولاية علي بن أبي طالب، و ذلك قوله تعالى: وَ قِفُوهُمْ إِنَّهُمْ مَسْؤُلُونَ، يعني عن ولاية علي بن أبي طالب»

Al-Sheykh in his Amaali, from Abu Muhammad Al-Faham, from Abu Al-Fazal Muhammad Bin Hashim bin Hisham Al-Hasimy the Prayer leader at Sur Man Rayy, from Abu hashim Bin Al-Qasim, from Muhammad Bin Zakariyya Bin Abdullah Al-Jowhary Al-Basry, from Abdullah Bin Al-Masny, from Samamat Bin Abdullah Bin Anas Bin Malik, from his father, from his grandfather,

(It has been narrated) from the Prophet-saww having said: ‘When it will be the Day of Judgement, and the Bridge would be Established over Hell, no one would be permitted to cross over it except the one with whom would be a permit in which is (mentioned) the Wilayah of Ali-asws Bin Abu Talib-asws, and these are the Words of the Exalted: And stop them! They have to be Questioned [37:24], meaning about the Wilayah of Ali-asws Bin Abu Talib-asws’.[22]

The Questioning at the first Bridge (Archway)

ويعضده: ما رواه محمد بن مؤمن الشيرازي رحمه الله: في كتابه حديثا يرفعه باسناده إلى ابن عباس قال: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله: إذا كان يوم القيامة أمر الله مالكا أن يسعر النيران السبع، ويأمر رضوان أن يزخرف الجنان الثمان، ويقول: يا ميكائيل مد الصراط على متن جهنم ويقول: يا جبرئيل أنصب ميزان العدل تحت العرش، ويقول: يا محمد قرب امتك للحساب

And it is supported by what has been reported by Muhammad Bin Mo’min Al-Sheyrazi, in his book, narrating by an unbroken chain going up to Ibn Abbas who said,

‘Rasool-Allah-saww said: ‘When it will be the Day of Judgement, Allah-azwj would Command an Angel to Inflame the seven Fires, and Command Rizwaan that he should decorate the eight Gardens, and He-azwj Would be Saying: “O Mikaeel-as! Extend the Bridge over the Hell!” and He-azwj would be Saying: “O Jibraeel-as! Establish the Scale of Justice underneath the Throne!” and He-azwj would be Saying: “O Muhammad-saww! Bring your-saww community near for the Reckoning!”

ثم يأمر الله تعالى أن يعقد على الصراط سبع قناطر طول كل قنطرة سبعة عشر ألف فرسخ، وعلى كل قنطرة سبعون ألف ملك يسألون هذه الامة نساءهم ورجالهم على القنطرة الاولى عن ولاية أمير المؤمنين وحب أهل بيت محمد صلى الله عليه وآله

Then Allah-azwj the Exalted would Command that he-saww should hold seven arches upon the Bridge, the length of each arch being of ten thousand Farsakhs, and upon each of the arch would be seven thousand Angels questioning this community, their women and their men, upon the first archway, about the Wilayah of Amir Al-Momineen-asws and the love for the People-asws of the Household of Muhammad-saww.

فمن أتى به جاز القنطرة كالبرق الخاطف، ومن لا يحب أهل بيته سقط على أم رأسه في قعر جهنم، ولو كان معه من أعمال البر عمل سبعين صديقا

So the one who comes with it, would pass over the arch like a streak of lightning, and the one who does not love the People-asws of his-saww Household would be flung headlong into the bottom of the Hell, even if he had with him the righteous deeds performed by seventy truthful ones’.[23]

Amir Al-Momineen-asws explains the questioning at various Pausing Stations:

In a length Hadith, when asked about the conflict in various Verses of the Holy Quran,

Questions of the non-believer on Holy Quran:

And Allah-azwj Says:

: إِنَّ ذَلِكَ لَحَقٌّ تَخَاصُمُ أَهْلِ النَّارِ (38:64)

Indeed the people in fire will be fighting among themselves.

And Allah-azwj Says:

قَالَ لَا تَخْتَصِمُوا لَدَيَّ وَقَدْ قَدَّمْتُ إِلَيْكُمْ بِالْوَعِيدِ (50:28)

Do not fight among yourselves in front of Me.

And Allah-azwj Says:

الْيَوْمَ نَخْتِمُ عَلَى أَفْوَاهِهِمْ وَتُكَلِّمُنَا أَيْدِيهِمْ وَتَشْهَدُ أَرْجُلُهُمْ بِمَا كَانُوا يَكْسِبُونَ (36:65)

On that Day, We shall seal their mouths up while their hands will speak to Us and their feet bear witness about what they have been earning.

And Allah-azwj Says:

وُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ نَاضِرَةٌ (22) إِلَى رَبِّهَا نَاظِرَةٌ (75:23)

Some faces will on that Day be bright with happiness.  Looking-up to their Rab.

And Allah-azwj Says:

لَا تُدْرِكُهُ الْأَبْصَارُ وَهُوَ يُدْرِكُ الْأَبْصَارَ وَهُوَ اللَّطِيفُ الْخَبِيرُ (6:103)

No power of vision can comprehend Him, whereas He encompasses all human vision: He is the Subtle, the Informed.

And Allah-azwj Says:

وَلَقَدْ رَآَهُ نَزْلَةً أُخْرَى (13) عِنْدَ سِدْرَةِ الْمُنْتَهَى (53:14)

What he sees now he has already seen near the Sidaratul Muntiha (Near the Hawthorn on the Boundary).

And Allah-azwj Says:

يَوْمَئِذٍ لَا تَنْفَعُ الشَّفَاعَةُ إِلَّا مَنْ أَذِنَ لَهُ الرَّحْمَنُ وَرَضِيَ لَهُ قَوْلًا (20:109)

On that Day, intercession shall be of no avail [to any] for refuse except those the Most Gracious will have granted the permission.

And Allah-azwj Says:

يَوْمَ يَقُومُ الرُّوحُ وَالْمَلَائِكَةُ صَفًّا لَا يَتَكَلَّمُونَ إِلَّا مَنْ أَذِنَ لَهُ الرَّحْمَنُ وَقَالَ صَوَابًا (78:38)

On the Day when all souls and all the angels will stand up in ranks: none will speak but he to whom the Most Gracious will have given the permission.

And Allah-azwj Says[24]

وَمَا كَانَ لِبَشَرٍ أَنْ يُكَلِّمَهُ اللَّهُ إِلَّا وَحْيًا :(42:51)

It is not appropriate for Allah to speak to any human being except through inspiration.

And Allah-azwj Says:

كَلَّا إِنَّهُمْ عَنْ رَبِّهِمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ لَمَحْجُوبُونَ (83:15)

Indeed, they will be screened off from their Lord on that day.

And Allah-azwj Says[25]:

هَلْ يَنْظُرُونَ إِلَّا أَنْ تَأْتِيَهُمُ الْمَلَائِكَةُ أَوْ يَأْتِيَ رَبُّكَ (6:158)

Are they only waiting for angels to come to them or for your Lord to arrive?

And Allah-azwj Says:

وَقَالُوا أَئِذَا ضَلَلْنَا فِي الْأَرْضِ أَئِنَّا لَفِي خَلْقٍ جَدِيدٍ بَلْ هُمْ بِلِقَاءِ رَبِّهِمْ كَافِرُونَ (32:10)

They disbelieve that they will be brought back to life after death.

And Allah-azwj Says:

فَأَعْقَبَهُمْ نِفَاقًا فِي قُلُوبِهِمْ إِلَى يَوْمِ يَلْقَوْنَهُ بِمَا أَخْلَفُوا اللَّهَ مَا وَعَدُوهُ وَبِمَا كَانُوا يَكْذِبُونَ (9:77)

So, He planted hypocrisy in their hearts till the day when they will meet Him because they broke their word to God which they had promised Him and for how they had been lying.

And Allah-azwj Says[26]:

فَمَنْ كَانَ يَرْجُوا لِقَاءَ رَبِّهِ (18:110)

Thus, those believe in meeting their Rab should keep on carrying out the good deeds.

And Allah-azwj Says:

وَرَأَى الْمُجْرِمُونَ النَّارَ فَظَنُّوا أَنَّهُمْ مُوَاقِعُوهَا وَلَمْ يَجِدُوا عَنْهَا مَصْرِفًا (18:53)

Sinners will see the Fire and think they are going to fall into it.  They will not find anyway to avert it.

And Allah-azwj Says[27]:

وَنَضَعُ الْمَوَازِينَ الْقِسْطَ لِيَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ (21:47)

We shall set up scales for justice on the Resurrection Day.  Thus no soul will be subjected to slightest cruelty.

And Allah-azwj Says:

فَمَنْ ثَقُلَتْ مَوَازِينُهُ فَأُولَئِكَ هُمُ الْمُفْلِحُونَ (23:102) وَمَنْ خَفَّتْ مَوَازِينُهُ فَأُولَئِكَ الَّذِينَ خَسِرُوا أَنْفُسَهُمْ فِي جَهَنَّمَ خَالِدُونَ (23:103)

Those whose scales are heavy will be prosperous; while those whose scales are light will be the ones who have lost their souls; they will remain in Hell.

Amir Al-Momineen-asws’s replies to the above Questions:

Amir Al-Momineen-asws:  The other verses of Allah-azwj, (78:38)

يَوْمَ يَقُومُ الرُّوحُ وَالْمَلَائِكَةُ صَفًّا , and رَبِّنَا مَا كُنَّا مُشْرِكِينَ (6:23)   , and  ثُمَّ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ يَكْفُرُ بَعْضُكُمْ بِبَعْضٍ وَيَلْعَنُ بَعْضُكُمْ بَعْضًا (29:25)  and إِنَّ ذَلِكَ لَحَقٌّ تَخَاصُمُ أَهْلِ النَّارِ (38:64)  and قَالَ لَا تَخْتَصِمُوا لَدَيَّ وَقَدْ قَدَّمْتُ إِلَيْكُمْ بِالْوَعِيدِ (50:28) and  الْيَوْمَ نَخْتِمُ عَلَى أَفْوَاهِهِمْ وَتُكَلِّمُنَا أَيْدِيهِمْ وَتَشْهَدُ أَرْجُلُهُمْ بِمَا كَانُوا يَكْسِبُونَ (36:65),

Meaning, on that Day We (after realising the extent of their sins) and some sinners will be cursing some other sinners and would be denying this verse, as they will do ‘AlBarat’[28] to dismiss their previous associates.  This would be similar to what Iblis-la says in the Chapter of Ibrahim ‘You have worshiped Me along with the one which I have already rejected[29] and Hazrat Ibrahim-as says we have denied you[30]; meaning we have disassociate ourselves from you.

Then they will reassemble at another place and where they will cry out with loud screams. These screams will be so horrific that if Allah-azwj were to allow these screams to reach the earth then its habitants would come under such distress that their organs would come out of their bodies, but only if Allah-azwj wishes so.  They will keep on crying for so long that their tears would dry up and they would start shedding tears of blood. [26](18:110) قُلْ إِنَّمَا أَنَا بَشَرٌ مِثْلُكُمْ يُوحَى إِلَيَّ أَنَّمَا إِلَهُكُمْ إِلَهٌ وَاحِدٌ فَمَنْ كَانَ يَرْجُوا لِقَاءَ رَبِّهِ فَلْيَعْمَلْ عَمَلًا صَالِحًا وَلَا يُشْرِكْ بِعِبَادَةِ رَبِّهِ أَحَدًا

[27] وَنَضَعُ الْمَوَازِينَ الْقِسْطَ لِيَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ فَلَا تُظْلَمُ نَفْسٌ شَيْئًا وَإِنْ كَانَ مِثْقَالَ حَبَّةٍ مِنْ خَرْدَلٍ أَتَيْنَا بِهَا وَكَفَى بِنَا حَاسِبِينَ (21:47)

[29] وَقَالَ الشَّيْطَانُ لَمَّا قُضِيَ الْأَمْرُ إِنَّ اللَّهَ وَعَدَكُمْ وَعْدَ الْحَقِّ وَوَعَدْتُكُمْ فَأَخْلَفْتُكُمْ وَمَا كَانَ لِي عَلَيْكُمْ مِنْ سُلْطَانٍ إِلَّا أَنْ دَعَوْتُكُمْ فَاسْتَجَبْتُمْ لِي فَلَا تَلُومُونِي وَلُومُوا أَنْفُسَكُمْ مَا أَنَا بِمُصْرِخِكُمْ وَمَا أَنْتُمْ بِمُصْرِخِيَّ إِنِّي كَفَرْتُ بِمَا أَشْرَكْتُمُونِ مِنْ قَبْلُ إِنَّ الظَّالِمِينَ لَهُمْ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ(14:22)

[30] قَدْ كَانَتْ لَكُمْ أُسْوَةٌ حَسَنَةٌ فِي إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَالَّذِينَ مَعَهُ إِذْ قَالُوا لِقَوْمِهِمْ إِنَّا بُرَآَءُ مِنْكُمْ وَمِمَّا تَعْبُدُونَ مِنْ دُونِ اللَّهِ كَفَرْنَا بِكُمْ وَبَدَا بَيْنَنَا وَبَيْنَكُمُ الْعَدَاوَةُ وَالْبَغْضَاءُ أَبَدًا حَتَّى تُؤْمِنُوا بِاللَّهِ وَحْدَهُ إِلَّا قَوْلَ إِبْرَاهِيمَ لِأَبِيهِ لَأَسْتَغْفِرَنَّ لَكَ وَمَا أَمْلِكُ لَكَ مِنَ اللَّهِ مِنْ شَيْءٍ رَبَّنَا عَلَيْكَ تَوَكَّلْنَا وَإِلَيْكَ أَنَبْنَا وَإِلَيْكَ الْمَصِيرُ(60:4)
