Shahadat of Syeda (asws) is on 15th of Jamadi ul Awwal

Summary:

In Shia Books, several Shahadat Days of Syeda-tul-Nisa-e-Alameen-asws have been reported, the reference to Syeda-asws‘s Shahadat day is made in number of days/months after the Shahadat of Rasool Allah-saww, which are: 3 months, 6 months, 95/70 days, but most of the Ahadith quote 75 days;  The Riwaya (not Hadith) of 6-months after Shahadat of Rasool Allah-saww is coming from historians where some of the narrators are even well known enemies of Ahl al-Bayt-asws, so Shias have not taken this date of Shahadat (the 6 months Riwaya[1]).

The two commonly commemorated dates of Syeda-asws’s Shahadat are the 15th of Jamadiul Awwal and the 3rd of Jamadiul Thani (as per 75 days after the Shahadat of Holy Prophet-saww and 93 days after the Shahadat of Holy Prophet-saww) as per Prophet’s Shahadat on the 28th of Safar (see Appendix I).

In most places, within Indian subcontinent, 3rd of Jamadiul Thani is taken as Shahadat day of Syed-asws whereas in most of the Arabic speaking Shia communities, the 15th of Jamadiul Awwal is considered to be more authentic and is commemorated as Syed-asws’s Shahadat.

In al-Kafi, all Ahadith give 15th of Jamadiul Awwal as Syeda-asws’s Shahadat date.  The Hadith which suggest 3rd of the Jamadiul Thani as Syed-asws’s Shahadat consist of two statements; its first part says Syeda-asws lived 75 days after the Shahadat of Holy Prophet-saww whereas its second parts says the 3rd of Jamadiul Thani as Shahadat day.  The first part of the Hadith is consistent with the other Ahadith where 75 days, after the Shahadat of Holy Prophet-saww, is mentioned, but its second part, if taken would give us the Shahadat date of Holy Prophet-saww on the 17th of Rabiul Awwal, which is the Zahoor/Nazool day of both Holy Prophet and 6th Imam-asws.

The Shahadat day of the Holy Prophet, is on the 28th of Safar, as given in many Ahadith of Masomeen-asws, see Appendix I.

There are some Riwayah (not Ahadith), which suggest that the 15th Jamadiul Awwal as well as 15th Jamadiul Thani is the Nazool of the 4th Imam-asws.  However, in several of those Riwayah, instead of 15th Jamadiul Awwal this day falls in the month of Shaban as Nazool day of the 4th Imam-asws (Appendix II).

Also there is a Riwayah in Kitab Sulaym Ibn Qais Hilali, which suggest that Shahadat of Syeda-asws was after 40 days from the Shahadat of Rasool Allah-saww (Appendix III).

All Ahadith related to Shahadat day of Syeda-asws from Bihar Al-Anwaar are cited in Appendix IV.

Ahadith on Shahadat day of Syeda-asws:

مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنِ ابْنِ مَحْبُوبٍ عَنِ ابْنِ رِئَابٍ عَنْ أَبِي عُبَيْدَةَ قَالَ سَأَلَ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع بَعْضُ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنِ الْجَفْرِ فَقَالَ هُوَ جِلْدُ ثَوْرٍ مَمْلُوءٌ عِلْماً قَالَ لَهُ فَالْجَامِعَةُ قَالَ تِلْكَ صَحِيفَةٌ طُولُهَا سَبْعُونَ ذِرَاعاً فِي عَرْضِ الْأَدِيمِ مِثْلُ فَخِذِ الْفَالِجِ فِيهَا كُلُّ مَا يَحْتَاجُ النَّاسُ إِلَيْهِ وَ لَيْسَ مِنْ قَضِيَّةٍ إِلَّا وَ هِيَ فِيهَا حَتَّى أَرْشُ الْخَدْشِ قَالَ فَمُصْحَفُ فَاطِمَةَ ع قَالَ فَسَكَتَ طَوِيلًا ثُمَّ قَالَ إِنَّكُمْ لَتَبْحَثُونَ عَمَّا تُرِيدُونَ وَ عَمَّا لَا تُرِيدُونَ إِنَّ فَاطِمَةَ مَكَثَتْ بَعْدَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ص خَمْسَةً وَ سَبْعِينَ يَوْماً وَ كَانَ دَخَلَهَا حُزْنٌ شَدِيدٌ عَلَى أَبِيهَا وَ كَانَ جَبْرَئِيلُ ع يَأْتِيهَا فَيُحْسِنُ عَزَاءَهَا عَلَى أَبِيهَا وَ يُطَيِّبُ نَفْسَهَا وَ يُخْبِرُهَا عَنْ أَبِيهَا وَ مَكَانِهِ وَ يُخْبِرُهَا بِمَا يَكُونُ بَعْدَهَا فِي ذُرِّيَّتِهَا وَ كَانَ عَلِيٌّ ع يَكْتُبُ ذَلِكَ فَهَذَا مُصْحَفُ فَاطِمَةَ ع

Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn Mahbub from ibn Riab from abu Ubayda who has said the following:

‘People from our group asked Abu Abd Allah-asws about Jafr and the Imam-asws said: ‘It is the skin of a bull which is full of knowledge. They then asked the Imam-asws about al-Jamiah. The Imam-asws replied: ‘It is a parchment that is seventy yards long with the width of a hide like that of the leg of a huge camel’. It contains all that people may need. There is no case for which there is not a rule in it. In it there is the law even to settle the compensation for a scratch caused to a person. ‘I (the narrator) then asked the Imam-asws: What is the Mushaf of Fatimah-asws? The Imam-asws waited for quite a while. Then he-asws said: ‘You ask about what you really mean and what you do not mean. Fatimah-asws lived after the Messenger of Allah-saww for seventy-five days. She-asws was severely grieved because of the death of her-asws father.

Jibril-as would come to provide her solace and condolence due to the Shahadat of her-asws father. Jibril-as would comfort her-asws soul, inform her-asws about her father-asws, his place, of the future events and about what would happen to her children. At the same time Ali-asws would write all of them down and thus has come to be known as the Mushaf of Fatimah-asws’.[2]

عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي عُمَيْرٍ عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ سَالِمٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ سَمِعْتُهُ يَقُولُ عَاشَتْ فَاطِمَةُ ( عليها السلام ) بَعْدَ أَبِيهَا خَمْسَةً وَ سَبْعِينَ يَوْماً لَمْ تُرَ كَاشِرَةً وَ لَا ضَاحِكَةً تَأْتِي قُبُورَ الشُّهَدَاءِ فِي كُلِّ جُمْعَةٍ مَرَّتَيْنِ الْإِثْنَيْنَ وَ الْخَمِيسَ فَتَقُولُ هَاهُنَا كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) هَاهُنَا كَانَ الْمُشْرِكُونَ .

Ali Bin Ibrahim, from his father, from Ibn Abu Umeyr, from Hisham Bin Salim,

(It has been narrated) from Abu Abdullah-asws, said, ‘I heard him-asws saying, ‘ (Syeda) Fatima-asws lived after her-asws father-saww for seventy five days, not being seen smiling of laughing. She-asws would come to the graves of the martyrs twice during every Friday, Monday and the Thursday and she-asws would be saying: ‘Over there was Rasool-Allah-saww and over there were the Polytheists!’[3]

Syeda Fatima-asws lived after the Shahadat of her father-saww for five and seventy days and was martyred in ‘جُمَادَى الْآخِرَةِ يَوْمَ الثَّلَاثَاءِ لِثَلَاثٍ’ Jumada II on Tuesday for three Khalon from year eleven of the Immigration.[4]

(ع) لَيْلًا وَ لَمْ يُؤْذِنْ بِهَا أَبَا بَكْرٍ، قَالَتْ فَكَانَتْ لِعَلِيٍّ وَجْهٌ مِنَ النَّاسِ حَيَاةَ فَاطِمَةَ فَلَمَّا تُوُفِّيَتْ فَاطِمَةُ عَلَيْهَا السَّلَامُ انْصَرَفَتْ وُجُوهُ النَّاسِ عَنْ عَلِيٍّ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ، وَ مَكَثَتْ فَاطِمَةُ بَعْدَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَ آلِهِ سِتَّةَ أَشْهُرٍ ثُمَّ تُوُفِّيَتْ.

 و روى الحميدي في سادس حديث من المتفق عليه من مسند أبي بكر قال و مكثت فاطمة بعد رسول الله ص ستة أشهر ثم توفيت قالت عائشة و كان لعلي وجهة بين الناس في حياة فاطمة فلما توفيت فاطمة انصرفت وجوه الناس عن علي ع و في حديث عروة فلما رأى علي انصراف وجوه الناس عنه ضرع إلى مصالحة أبي بكر فقال رجل للزهري فلم يبايعه علي ستة أشهر فقال لا و الله و لا أحد من بني هاشم حتى بايعه علي قال فأرسل إلى أبي بكر ائتنا و لا تأتنا معك أحد فكره أن يأتيه عمر لأنه علم من شدة عمر فقال عمر لا تأتهم وحدك

و ذكر مسلم عن عبد الرزاق عن معمر عن الزهري عن عروة عن عائشة و في حديث الليث بن سعد عن عقيل عن ابن شهاب عن عائشة في خبر طويل يذكر فيه أن فاطمة أرسلت إلى أبي بكر تسأل ميراثها من رسول الله القصة قال و هجرته و لم تكلمه حتى توفيت و لم تؤذن أبا بكر يصلي عليها. الواقدي أن فاطمة لما حضرتها الوفاة أوصت عليا أن لا يصلي عليها أبو بكر و عمر فعمل بوصيتها. عيسى بن مهران عن مخول بن إبراهيم عن عمرو بن ثابت عن أبي إسحاق عن ابن جبير عن ابن عباس قال أوصت فاطمة أن لا يعلم إذا ماتت أبو بكر و لا عمر و لا يصليا عليها قال فدفنها علي ليلا و لم يعلمهما بذلك. تاريخ أبي بكر بن كامل قالت عائشة عاشت فاطمة بعد رسول الله ستة أشهر فلما توفيت دفنها علي ليلا و صلى عليها. و روى فيه عن سفيان بن عيينة و عن الحسن بن محمد و عبد الله بن أبي شيبة عن يحيى بن سعيد القطان عن معمر عن الزهري أن فاطمة دفنت ليلا. و عنه في هذا الكتاب أن أمير المؤمنين و الحسن و الحسين دفنوها ليلا و غيبوا قبرها. و في تاريخ الطبري أن فاطمة دفنت ليلا و لم يحضرها إلا العباس و علي و المقداد و الزبير. و في رواياتنا أنه صلى عليها أمير المؤمنين و الحسن و الحسين و عقيل و سلمان و أبو ذر و المقداد و عمار و بريدة و في رواية و العباس و ابنه الفضل و في رواية و حذيفة و ابن مسعود

Why some Observe Syeda Shahadat on the 3rd Jamadi-ul-Thani?

This comes from a Hadith where it has been narrated that Syeda-asws‘s Shahadat was after 75 days from the Shahadat of Prophet-saww, but its later part says that it was on the 3rd of Jamadi-ul-Thani and on Tuesday.

The first part of the Hadith is consistent with several other Ahadith which say Syeda-asws ‘s Shahadat is 75 days after that of Prophet-saww but part II has incorrectly recorded as if we count 75 days back from the 3rd of Jamadi-ul-Thani, the day of Shahadat of Prophet-saww will be on the 17th of Rabiul Awwal, which is the Nazool Day of both Holy Prophet-saww and 6th Imam-saww.

The Shahadat Day of the Holy Prophet is on the 28th of Safar, as one per several Ahadiht and without any other dates found in the Ahadith, see Appendix I.

و أقام بمكة بعد البعثة ثلاث عشرة سنة ثم هاجر إلى المدينة بعد أن استتر في الغار ثلاثة أيام و قيل ستة أيام و دخل المدينة يوم الإثنين الحادي عشر من ربيع الأول و بقي بها عشر سنين ثم قبض لليلتين بقيتا من صفر سنة إحدى عشرة للهجرة.

و إن أباه توفي و أمه حبلى و قدمت أمه آمنة بنت وهب على أخواله من بني عدي من النجار بالمدينة ثم رجعت به حتى إذا كانت بالأبواء ماتت و أرضعته ص حتى شب حليمة بنت عبد الله السعدية و تزوج بخديجة و هو ابن خمس و عشرين سنة و توفي عنه أبو طالب و له ست و أربعون سنة و ثمانية أشهر و أربعة و عشرون يوما. و الصحيح أن أبا طالب رضي الله عنه توفي عنه في آخر السنة العاشرة من مبعث رسول الله ص ثم توفيت خديجة بعد أبي طالب بثلاثة أيام فسمى رسول الله ص ذلك العام عام الحزن فقال ما زالت قريش قاعدة عني حتى مات أبو طالب. و أقام بعد البعثة بمكة ثلاث عشرة سنة ثم هاجر منها إلى المدينة بعد أن استتر في الغار ثلاثة أيام و دخل المدينة يوم الإثنين الحادي عشر من شهر ربيع الأول و بقي بها عشر سنين ثم قبض ص يوم الإثنين لليلتين بقيتا من صفر سنة إحدى عشرة من الهجرة

* 4 * وصية فاطمة الزهراء عليها السلام وشهادتها

قال: فبقيت فاطمة عليها السلام بعد وفاة أبيها رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله أربعين ليلة. فلما اشتد بها الأمر دعت عليا عليه السلام وقالت: (يا بن عم، ما أراني إلا لما بي، وأنا أوصيك أن تتزوج بنت أختي لي. وأن لا يشهد أحد من أعداء الله جنازتي ولا دفني ولا الصلاة علي).

4 – Will of Fatiima Al-Zahra-asws and her testimony

(Abdullah Bin Al-Abbas) said, ‘Fatima-asws remained after the passing away of her-asws father-saww the Rasool Allah-saww, for forty nights. When her-asws matter intensified, she-asws called Ali-asws and said: ‘O paternal cousin, I-asws can see what (situation) I-asws am in, and I-asws am bequeathing to you that you-asws should marry the daughter of my-asws sister (Amaama binte Zaynab) for me-asws. And that no one from the enemies of Allah-saww should witness my-asws funeral, or my-asws burial, or Pray over me-asws’.

قال ابن عباس: وهو قول أمير المؤمنين عليه السلام: (أشياء لم أجد إلى تركهن سبيلا، لأن القرآن بها أنزل على قلب محمد صلى الله عليه وآله: قتال الناكثين والقاسطين والمارقين الذي أوصاني وعهد إلي خليلي رسول الله بقتالهم، وتزويج أمامة بنت زينب أوصتني بها فاطمة عليها السلام).

Ibn Abbas said, ‘And it is the statement of Amir-ul-Momineen-asws: ‘Of the things which I-asws could not find a way to leave it, because the Quran Descended upon the heart of Muhammad-saww, were – Fighting against the breakers (of the Covenant), the unjust, and the renegades, which is what my-asws friend the Rasool Allah-saww had bequeathed to me-asws to fight against, and the marriage to Amaama Bint Zaynab, which Fatima-asws had bequeathed to me-asws’.

قال ابن عباس: فقبضت فاطمة عليها السلام من يومها، فارتجت المدينة بالبكاء من الرجال والنساء، ودهش الناس كيوم قبض فيه رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله. فأقبل أبو بكر وعمر يعزيان عليا عليه السلام ويقولان له: (يا أبا الحسن، لا تسبقنا بالصلاة على ابنة رسول الله). فلما كان في الليل دعا علي عليه السلام العباس والفضل والمقداد وسلمان وأبا ذر وعمارا، فقدم العباس فصلى عليها ودفنوها.

Ibn Abbas said, ‘On the day in which Fatima-asws passed away, Al-Medina reverberated with the sounds of wailing from the men and the women, and the people were as shocked as they were on the day in which the Rasool Allah-saww passed away. Abu Bakr and Umar came to condole Ali-asws and they both said to him-asws, ‘O Abu Al-Hassan (a.s), do not precede us by Praying upon the daughter of the Rasool Allah-saww’. When it was the night, Ali-asws called Al-Abbas, and Al-Fazl, and Al-Miqdadar, and Salmanar, and Abu Dharrar, and Ammar. Al-Abbas went forward, so Prayer was recited over her-asws and she-asws was buried.

أراد عمر نبش قبر الزهراء عليها السلام فواجهه أمير المؤمنين عليه السلام

فلما أصبح الناس أقبل أبو بكر وعمر والناس يريدون الصلاة على فاطمة عليها السلام. فقال المقداد: قد دفنا فاطمة البارحة. فالتفت عمر إلى أبي بكر فقال: ألم أقل لك إنهم سيفعلون؟ قال العباس: إنها أوصت أن لا تصليا عليها. فقال عمر: والله لا تتركون – يا بني هاشم – حسدكم القديم لنا أبدا. إن هذه الضغائن التي في صدوركم لن تذهب والله لقد هممت أن أنبشها فأصلي عليها.

Umar wanted to dig up the grave of Al-Zahra-asws, so Amir-ul-Momineen-asws faced up to him

When it was the morning, Abu Bakr and Umar came up with the people wanting to Pray over Fatima-asws. Al-Miqdadar said, ‘Fatima-asws was buried last night’. Umar turned towards Abu Bakr, ‘Did I not say to you that they will be belittling you?’ Al-Abbas said, ‘She-asws had bequeathed that you two would not pray over her-asws’.

Umar said, ‘By Allah-azwj – O Clan of Hashim-as – you will not leave being envious to us, ever. If this is the grudge in your hearts, it will never go away. By Allah-azwj, I am thinking of digging her-asws out, so I can pray over her-asws’.

فقال علي عليه السلام: (والله لو رمت ذلك يا بن صهاك لأرجعت إليك يمينك. والله لئن سللت سيفي لا غمدته دون إزهاق نفسك، فرم ذلك). فانكسر عمر وسكت، وعلم أن عليا عليه السلام إذا حلف صدق. ثم قال علي عليه السلام: يا عمر، ألست الذي هم بك رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله وأرسل إلي، فجئت متقلدا بسيفي، ثم أقبلت نحوك لأقتلك، فأنزل الله عز وجل: (فلا تعجل عليهم إنما نعد لهم عدا)، فانصرفوا.

Ali-asws said: ‘By Allah-azwj, if you were to do that, O son of Sahaak, I-asws will return your pledge back to you. By Allah-azwj, if I-asws unsheathe my-asws sword, I-asws will not sheathe it back until I cause you to die, so do that’. So Umar was broken and kept quiet, and he knew that if Ali-asws makes a vow, he-asws would always fulfil it.

Then Ali-asws said: ‘O Umar, are you not the one whom the Rasool Allah-saww intended, and he-saww sent for me-asws, so I-asws came wearing my-asws sword, then I-asws came near you for killing you, so Allah -azwj Mighty and Majestic Revealed: “[19:84] Therefore be not in haste against them, We only number out to them a number (of days).”? So they left.

* 5 * مؤامرتهم لقتل أمير المؤمنين عليه السلام

قال ابن عباس: ثم إنهم تآمروا وتذاكروا فقالوا: (لا يستقيم لنا أمر ما دام هذا الرجل حيا) فقال أبو بكر: من لنا بقتله؟ فقال عمر: (خالد بن الوليد) فأرسلا إليه فقالا: (يا خالد، ما رأيك في أمر نحملك عليه؟ قال: احملاني على ما شئتما، فوالله إن حملتماني على قتل ابن أبي طالب لفعلت. فقالا: والله ما نريد غيره. قال: فإني له فقال أبو بكر: إذا قمنا في الصلاة صلاة الفجر فقم إلى جانبه ومعك السيف. فإذا سلمت فاضرب عنقه. قال: نعم. فافترقوا على ذلك.

Their conspiracy to kill Amir-ul-Momineen-asws

Ibn Abbas said, ‘Then they conspired and discussed, so they said, ‘The command cannot be stable for us so long as this man-asws is alive’. Abu Bakr said, ‘Who is there for us, to kill him-asws?’ Umar said, ‘Khalid Bin Waleed’. So they sent for him and said, ‘O Khalid, what is your view regarding a matter we would like to burden you with?’ He said, ‘Burden me with whatsoever you both want to, for, by Allah-azwj, if you burden me with the killing of Ali-asws Bin Abu Talib-asws, I will do it’.

They said, ‘By Allah-azwj, we do not want anything apart from this’. He said, ‘So I am for it’. Abu Bakr said, ‘When we stand for the Prayer, the Dawn Prayer, so stand beside him-asws and keep the sword with you. So when I send the greetings (At the end of the Prayer) strike his-asws neck’. He said, ‘Yes’. So they separated (having agreed) upon that.

ندامة أبي بكر عند إجراء المؤامرة

ثم إن أبا بكر تفكر فيما أمر به من قتل علي عليه السلام وعرف أنه إن فعل ذلك وقعت حرب شديدة وبلاء طويل، فندم على ما أمره به. فلم ينم ليلته تلك حتى أصبح ثم أتى المسجد وقد أقيمت الصلاة. فتقدم فصلى بالناس مفكرا لا يدري ما يقول. وأقبل خالد بن الوليد متقلدا بالسيف حتى قام إلى جانب علي عليه السلام، وقد فطن علي عليه السلام ببعض ذلك. فلما فرغ أبو بكر من تشهده صاح قبل أن يسلم: (يا خالد لا تفعل ما أمرتك، فإن فعلت قتلتك) ثم سلم عن يمينه وشماله.

Regret of Abu Bakr for having made the conspiracy

Then Abu Bakr pondered over what he had ordered, for the killing of Ali-asws, and realised that if he were to do that, a severe war would break out and a lengthy affliction, so he regretted what he had ordered for. He did not sleep in that night till the morning. Then he came to the Masjid and the Prayer had been called for. So he went forward to Pray with the people, thoughtful, not knowing what to say. And Khalid Bin Waleed came up wearing the sword until he stood by the side of Ali-asws, and Ali-asws had discerned the situation by some of that. When Abu Bakr was free from bearing testimony (at the end of the Prayer), he shouted before sending the greetings, ‘O Khalid, do not do what I had ordered you to, for if you do it I will (have you) killed. Then he greeted from his right and from his left.

المواجهة لمؤامرة القتل

فوثب علي عليه السلام فأخذ بتلابيب خالد وانتزع السيف من يده، ثم صرعه وجلس على صدره وأخذ سيفه ليقتله، واجتمع عليه أهل المسجد ليخلصوا خالدا فما قدروا عليه. فقال العباس: حلفوه بحق القبر (لما كففت). فحلفوه بالقبر فتركه، وقام فانطلق إلى منزله.

The confrontation to the conspiracy for the murder

So Ali-asws leapt and grabbed Khalid and wrestled the sword out from his hand, then made him fall and sat upon his chest, and took his sword out to kill him, and the people of the Masjid gathered against him-asws to free Khalid. They could not do it. Al-Abbas said, ‘Hold him-asws on oath by the right of the grave (of the Rasool Allah-saww) to restrain him-asws. So they all held him-asws on oath by the grave (of the Rasool Allah-saww), so he-asws left him, and stood up and went to his-asws home.

وجاء الزبير والعباس وأبو ذر والمقداد وبنو هاشم، واخترطوا السيوف وقالوا: (والله لا تنتهون حتى يتكلم ويفعل) واختلف الناس وماجوا واضطربوا.

And Al-Zubayr, and Al-Abbas, and Abu Dharrar, and Al-Miqdadar, and the Clan of Hashim-as came hailing unsheathed their swords and said, ‘By Allah-azwj, we will not finish here until he (Khalid Bin Waleed) speaks (as to who ordered him) and he does it’. The people differed, and there was commotion, and they became restless.

وخرجت نسوة بني هاشم فصرخن وقلن: (يا أعداء الله، ما أسرع ما أبديتم العداوة لرسول الله وأهل بيته لطالما أردتم هذا من رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله، فلم تقدروا عليه، فقتلتم ابنته بالأمس، ثم أنتم تريدون اليوم أن تقتلوا أخاه وابن عمه ووصيه وأبا ولده؟ كذبتم ورب الكعبة. ما كنتم تصلون إلى قتله). حتى تخوف الناس أن تقع فتنة عظيمة.

And the women of the Clan of Hashim-as came out screaming and said, ‘O enemies of Allah-azwj! How quickly you have shown your enmity to the Rasool Allah-saww and the People-asws of his-saww Household. You often wanted this from the Rasool Allah-saww, but you did not have the power to do it. You killed his-saww daughter yesterday, then today you wanted to kill his-saww brother and the son-asws of his-saww uncle-as, and his-saww successor-asws, and the father-asws of his-saww sons-asws? You are all liars, by the Lord-azwj of the Kaabah. You will not arrive to killing him-asws’. To the extent that the people feared that a great strife (Fitna) would break out.[5]

Appendix IV: Ahadith from Bihar Al-Anwaar

105- مصباح الأنوار: عن جعفر بن محمد، عن آبائه عليهم السلام، قال: مكثت فاطمة عليها السلام بعد النبيّ صلّى اللّه عليه و آله خمسة و سبعين يوما ثم مرضت،

Misbah Al-Anwaar – From Ja’far Bin Muhammad-asws, from his-asws forefathers-asws having said: ‘(Syeda) Fatima-asws remained after the Prophet-saww for seventy-five (75) days, then she-asws became ill.

فاستأذن عليها أبو بكر و عمر، فلم تأذن لهما، فأتيا أمير المؤمنين عليه السلام فكلّماه في ذلك، فكلّمها، و كانت لا تعصيه، فأذنت لهما، فدخلا، و كلّماها فلم ترد عليهما جوابا، و حوّلت وجهها الكريم عنهما،

Abu Bakr and Umar sought permission to see her-asws, but she-asws did not permit to them. They came to Amir Al-Momineen-asws and spoke to him-asws regarding that, and he-asws spoke to her-asws, and she-asws never used to disobey him-asws, so she-asws permitted to them. They entered and spoke to her-asws, but she-asws did not respond an answer to them, and turned around her-asws honourable face away from them.

فخرجا و هما يقولان لعلّي: إن حدث بها حدث فلا تفوتنا، فقالت: عند خروجهما لعليّ عليه السلام: إنّ لي إليك حاجة فأحبّ أن لا تمنعنيها، فقال عليه السلام: و ما ذاك؟ فقالت: أسألك أن لا يصلّ عليّ أبو بكر و لا عمر، و ماتت من ليلتها، فدفنها قبل الصباح.

They went out and they were saying to Ali-asws, ‘If an event of death were to occur, then do not make us miss it’. She-asws said to Ali-asws during their exit: ‘There is a need for me-asws to you-asws, and I-asws would love it if you-asws do not refuse it’. He-asws said: ‘And what is that?’ She-asws said: ‘I-asws ask you-asws that neither Abu Bakr nor Umar should pray Salat upon me-asws’, and she-asws passed away during her-asws night, and he-asws buried her-asws before the morning.

فجاءا حين أصبحا فقالا: لا تترك عداوتك يا ابن أبي طالب أبدا، ماتت بنت رسول اللّه فلم تعلمنا؟!، فقال أمير المؤمنين عليه السلام: لئن لم ترجعا لأفضحنّكما! قالها ثلاثا، فلما قال انصرفوا ..

When it was morning, they came and said, ‘You-asws will not leave your-asws enmity O son-asws of Abu Talib-asws, ever! The daughter-asws of Rasool-Allah-saww died and you-asws did not let us know?!’ Amir Al-Momineen-asws said: ‘If you two do not return, I-asws will expose both of you!’ – saying it thrice. When he-asws had said that, they left’’.[6]

146- نص، كفاية الأثر أَبُو الْمُفَضَّلِ الشَّيْبَانِيُّ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّزَّاقِ بْنِ سُلَيْمَانَ بْنِ غَالِبٍ الْأَزْدِيِّ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ عَلِيٍ‏ عَنْ عَبْدِ الْوَهَّابِ بْنِ هَمَّامٍ الْحِمْيَرِيِّ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ عَنْ شَرِيكٍ عَنِ الرُّكَيْنِ بْنِ الرَّبِيعِ عَنِ الْقَاسِمِ بْنِ حَسَّانَ عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الْأَنْصَارِيِّ قَالَ: كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ فِي الشَّكَاةِ الَّتِي قُبِضَ فِيهَا فَإِذَا فَاطِمَةُ عِنْدَ رَأْسِهِ قَالَ فَبَكَتْ حَتَّى ارْتَفَعَ صَوْتُهَا فَرَفَعَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص طَرْفَهُ إِلَيْهَا فَقَالَ حَبِيبَتِي فَاطِمَةُ مَا الَّذِي يُبْكِيكِ قَالَتْ أَخْشَى الضَّيْعَةَ مِنْ بَعْدِكَ

(The book) ‘Kifayat Al Aser’ – Abu Al Mufazzal Al haybani, from Abdul Razaq Bin Suleyman Bin Ghalin Al Azdy, from Al-Hassan Bin Ali, from Abdul Wahab Bin Hammam Al Himeyri, from Ibn Abu Sheyba, from Shareek, from Al Rakeyn Bin Al Rabie Bin Hassam, from Jabir Bin Abdullah Al Ansari who said,

‘Rasool-Allah-saww was in the illness in which he-saww passed away, and (Syeda) Fatima-asws was by his-saww head. She-asws cried until her-asws voice was raised, so Rasool-Allah-saww raised his-saww eyes to her-asws. He-saww said: ‘My-saww beloved (Syeda) Fatima-asws! What is that which makes you-asws cry?’ She-asws said: ‘I-asws fear the neglect from after you-saww’.

قَالَ يَا حَبِيبَتِي لَا تَبْكِيِنَّ فَنَحْنُ أَهْلُ بَيْتٍ قَدْ أَعْطَانَا اللَّهُ سَبْعَ خِصَالٍ لَمْ يُعْطِهَا أَحَداً قَبْلَنَا وَ لَا يُعْطِيهَا أَحَداً بَعْدَنَا مِنَّا خَاتَمُ النَّبِيِّينَ وَ أَحَبُّ الْمَخْلُوقِينَ إِلَى اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ وَ هُوَ أَنَا أَبُوكِ

He-saww said: ‘My-saww beloved! Do not cry, for we-asws are People-asws of the Household, Allah-azwj has Given us seven characteristics He-azwj has not Given to anyone (else) before us-asws not will He-azwj be Giving it to anyone after us-asws. From us-asws is last of the Prophets-saww and the most beloved of the creatures to Allah-azwj Mighty and Majestic, and he-saww is me-saww, your-asws father-saww.

وَ وَصِيُّنَا خَيْرُ الْأَوْصِيَاءِ وَ أَحَبُّهُمْ إِلَى اللَّهِ وَ هُوَ بَعْلُكِ وَ شَهِيدُنَا خَيْرُ الشُّهَدَاءِ وَ أَحَبُّهُمْ إِلَى اللَّهِ وَ هُوَ عَمُّكِ وَ مِنَّا مَنْ لَهُ جَنَاحَانِ فِي الْجَنَّةِ يَطِيرُ بِهِمَا مَعَ الْمَلَائِكَةِ وَ هُوَ ابْنُ عَمِّكِ وَ مِنَّا سِبْطَا هَذِهِ الْأُمَّةِ وَ هُمَا ابْنَاكِ الْحَسَنُ وَ الْحُسَيْنُ

And my-saww successor-asws is the best of the successors-as, and the most beloved of them-as to Allah-azwj, and he-asws is your-asws husband, and our-asws martyrs are best of the martyrs, and the most beloved of them, and he-as is your-asws uncle-as (Hamza-as), and from us-asws is one having two wings for him-saww in the Paradise, he-as is flying with these with the Angels, and he-as is son-as of your-as, and from us-as are two chiefs of this community, and they-asws are your-asws two son-asws, Al-Hassan-asws and Al-Husayn-asws.

سَوْفَ يُخْرِجُ اللَّهُ مِنْ صُلْبِ الْحُسَيْنِ تِسْعَةً مِنَ الْأَئِمَّةِ أُمَنَاءُ مَعْصُومُونَ‏ وَ مِنَّا مَهْدِيُّ هَذِهِ الْأُمَّةِ إِذَا صَارَتِ الدُّنْيَا هَرْجاً وَ مَرْجاً وَ تَظَاهَرَتِ الْفِتَنُ وَ تَقَطَّعَتِ السُّبُلُ وَ أَغَارَ بَعْضُهُمْ عَلَى بَعْضٍ فَلَا كَبِيرٌ يَرْحَمُ صَغِيراً وَ لَا صَغِيرٌ يُوَقِّرُ كَبِيراً فَيَبْعَثُ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ عِنْدَ ذَلِكَ مَهْدِيَّنَا التَّاسِعَ مِنْ صُلْبِ الْحُسَيْنِ

Soon Allah-azwj will Extract from the Sulb of Al-Husayn-asws, nine from the Imams-asws, being trustees, Infallible; and from us-asws is Mahdi-asws of this community. When the world becomes with troubles and mess, and the Fitna prevails, and the ways are cut off, and they raise upon each other, so an elder would not have mercy on a young, nor would a young respect the elder, Allah-azwj Mighty and Majestic will Send our-asws Mahdi-asws during that, being the ninth from the Sulb of Al-Husayn-asws.

يَفْتَحُ حُصُونَ الضَّلَالَةِ وَ قُلُوباً غَفْلَاءَ يَقُومُ بِالدِّينِ فِي آخِرِ الزَّمَانِ كَمَا قُمْتُ بِهِ فِي أَوَّلِ الزَّمَانِ وَ يَمْلَأُ الْأَرْضَ عَدْلًا كَمَا مُلِئَتْ جَوْراً

He-asws will conquer the fortresses of the straying and the heedless hearts. He-asws will stand with the religion at the end of times, just as I-saww have stood with it during the first era, and he-asws will fill the earth with justice just as it would have been filled with tyranny.

يَا فَاطِمَةُ لَا تَحْزَنِي وَ لَا تَبْكِي فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ أَرْحَمُ مِنِّي بِكِ وَ أَرْأَفُ عَلَيْكِ مِنِّي وَ ذَلِكِ لِمَكَانِكِ مِنِّي وَ مَوْضِعِكِ مِنْ قَلْبِي وَ زَوَّجَكِ اللَّهُ زَوْجاً هُوَ أَشْرَفُ أَهْلِ بَيْتِكِ حَسَباً وَ أَكْرَمُهُمْ مَنْصَباً وَ أَرْحَمُهُمْ بِالرَّعِيَّةِ وَ أَعْدَلُهُمْ بِالسَّوِيَّةِ وَ أَبْصَرُهُمْ بِالْقَضِيَّةِ

‘(Syeda) Fatima-asws! Do not grieve and do not cry, for Allah-azwj is more Merciful than I-saww am with you-asws, and Kinder upon you-asws and more compassionate upon you-asws than I-saww am, and that is due to your-asws position from me-saww and your-saww place from my-saww heart, and Allah-azwj has Married you-asws to a husband-asws who is nobles of the people of your-asws Household in affiliates, and most honourable of them in lineage, and most merciful of them with the citizens, and most just of them with the equality, and most insightful with the judgments.

وَ قَدْ سَأَلْتُ رَبِّي عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ أَنْ تَكُونِي أَوَّلَ مَنْ يَلْحَقُنِي‏ مِنْ أَهْلِ بَيْتِي أَلَا إِنَّكِ بَضْعَةٌ مِنِّي فَمَنْ آذَاكِ فَقَدْ آذَانِي

And I-saww asked my-saww Lord-azwj Mighty and Majestic to Make you-asws to be the first one from my-saww family to join with me-saww. Indeed! You-asws are a part from me-saww. The one who hurts you-asws, so he has hurt me-saww’.

قَالَ جَابِرٌ فَلَمَّا قُبِضَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ دَخَلَ إِلَيْهَا رَجُلَانِ مِنَ الصَّحَابَةِ فَقَالا لَهَا كَيْفَ أَصْبَحْتِ يَا بِنْتَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ قَالَتْ اصْدُقَانِي‏ هَلْ سَمِعْتُمَا مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ- فَاطِمَةُ بَضْعَةٌ مِنِّي فَمَنْ آذَاهَا فَقَدْ آذَانِي

Jabir said, ‘When Rasool-Allah-saww passed away, two men (Abu Bakr and Umar) from the companions entered to see her-asws. They said to her-asws, ‘How have you-asws become, O daughter-asws of Rasool-Allah-saww?’ She-asws said: ‘Ratify me-asws, have you two heard from Rasool-Allah-saww (saying): ‘Fatima is a part from me-saww, so the one who hurts her-asws has hurt me-saww’?’

قَالا نَعَمْ وَ اللَّهِ لَقَدْ سَمِعْنَا ذَلِكَ مِنْهُ فَرَفَعَتْ يَدَيْهَا إِلَى السَّمَاءِ وَ قَالَتْ- اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أُشْهِدُكَ أَنَّهُمَا قَدْ آذَيَانِي وَ غَصَبَا حَقِّي ثُمَّ أَعْرَضَتْ عَنْهُمَا فَلَمْ تُكَلِّمْهُمَا بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ وَ عَاشَتْ بَعْدَ أَبِيهَا خَمْسَةً وَ سَبْعِينَ يَوْماً حَتَّى أَلْحَقَهَا اللَّهُ بِهِ‏.

They said, ‘Yes, by Allah-azwj, we have both heard that from him-saww’. She-asws raised her-asws hands towards the sky and said: ‘O Allah-azwj! I-asws Keep You-azwj as Witness, they have both hurt me-asws and have usurped my-asws rights’. Then she-asws turned away from them and did not speak to them both after that, and she-asws lived after her-asws father-saww for seventy-five days until Allah-azwj Joined her-asws with him-saww’’.[7]

16 قب، المناقب لابن شهرآشوب‏ قُبِضَ النَّبِيُّ ص وَ لَهَا يَوْمَئِذٍ ثَمَانِيَ عَشْرَةَ سَنَةً وَ سَبْعَةُ أَشْهُرٍ وَ عَاشَتْ بَعْدَهُ اثْنَيْنِ وَ سَبْعِينَ يَوْماً وَ يُقَالُ خَمْسَةً وَ سَبْعِينَ يَوْماً وَ قِيلَ أَرْبَعَةَ أَشْهُرٍ وَ قَالَ الْقُرْبَانِيُّ قَدْ قِيلَ أَرْبَعِينَ يَوْماً وَ هُوَ أَصَحُّ

(The book) ‘Al Manaqib’ of Ibn Shehr Ashub –

‘The Prophet-saww passed away and on that day, there were eighteen years seven months for her (Syeda Fatima-asws), and she-asws lived after him-saww seventy-two days. And it is said, ‘Seventy-five days’. And it is said, ‘Four months’. And Al Qurbany said, ‘And it has been said forty days, and it is most correct.

وَ تُوُفِّيَتْ ع لَيْلَةَ الْأَحَدِ لِثَلَاثَ عَشْرَةَ لَيْلَةً خَلَتْ مِنْ شَهْرِ رَبِيعٍ الْآخِرِ سَنَةَ إِحْدَى عَشْرَةَ مِنَ الْهِجْرَةِ وَ مَشْهَدُهَا بِالْبَقِيعِ وَ قَالُوا إِنَّهَا دُفِنَتْ فِي بَيْتِهَا وَ قَالُوا قَبْرُهَا بَيْنَ قَبْرِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ص وَ مِنْبَرِهِ.

And she-asws expired on the night of Sunday of the tenth night vacant from the month of Rabbi Al-Akhar (20th) of the eleventh year from the Emigration, and her-asws monument (grave) is at Al Baqie (cemetery). And they said she-asws was buried in her-asws house. And they said her-asws grave is between the grave of Rasool-Allah-saww and his-saww pulpit’’.[8]

وَ رُوِيَ‏ أَنَّهَا مَا زَالَتْ بَعْدَ أَبِيهَا مُعَصَّبَةَ الرَّأْسِ نَاحِلَةَ الْجِسْمِ مُنْهَدَّةَ الرُّكْنِ بَاكِيَةَ الْعَيْنِ مُحْتَرِقَةَ الْقَلْبِ يُغْشَى عَلَيْهَا سَاعَةً بَعْدَ سَاعَةٍ

And it is reported –

‘She-asws did not cease to be bandaged of hear after her-asws father-saww, thin of body, sighing in the corner, crying of the eyes, burning of the heart, there was fainting upon her-asws time after time.

وَ تَقُولُ لِوَلَدَيْهَا أَيْنَ أَبُوكُمَا الَّذِي كَانَ يُكْرِمُكُمَا وَ يَحْمِلُكُمَا مَرَّةً بَعْدَ مَرَّةٍ أَيْنَ أَبُوكُمَا الَّذِي كَانَ أَشَدَّ النَّاسِ شَفَقَةً عَلَيْكُمَا فَلَا يَدَعُكُمَا تَمْشِيَانِ عَلَى الْأَرْضِ وَ لَا أَرَاهُ يَفْتَحُ هَذَا الْبَابَ أَبَداً وَ لَا يَحْمِلُكُمَا عَلَى عَاتِقِهِ كَمَا لَمْ يَزَلْ يَفْعَلُ بِكُمَا

And she-asws was saying to her-asws two sons-asws: ‘Where is your-asws (grand) father-saww who used to honour you-asws, and carry you-asws time after time! Where is your-asws (grand) father-saww who was the most intensely compassionate upon you-asws, so he-saww would not leave you-asws walking upon the ground nor do I-asws see him-saww opening this door, ever, nor will he-saww be carrying you-asws upon his-saww shoulders like what he-saww used to do with you-asws both’.

ثُمَّ مَرِضَتْ وَ مَكَثَتْ أَرْبَعِينَ لَيْلَةً ثُمَّ دَعَتْ أُمَّ أَيْمَنَ وَ أَسْمَاءَ بِنْتَ عُمَيْسٍ وَ عَلِيّاً ع وَ أَوْصَتْ إِلَى عَلِيٍّ بِثَلَاثٍ أَنْ يَتَزَوَّجَ بِابْنَةِ أُخْتِهَا أُمَامَةَ لِحُبِّهَا أَوْلَادَهَا وَ أَنْ يَتَّخِذَ نَعْشاً لِأَنَّهَا كَانَتْ رَأَتِ الْمَلَائِكَةَ تَصَوَّرُوا صُورَتَهُ وَ وَصَفَتْهُ لَهُ وَ أَنْ لَا يَشْهَدَ أَحَدٌ جَنَازَتَهَا مِمَّنْ ظَلَمَهَا وَ أَنْ لَا يَتْرُكَ أَنْ يُصَلِّيَ عَلَيْهَا أَحَدٌ مِنْهُمْ.

Then she-asws fell ill (after being getting injured from the attack of Muslim on her-asws house), and she-asws remained (alive) for forty nights. Then she-asws called Umm Ayman, and Asma Bint Umeys, and Ali-asws, and bequeathed to Ali-asws with three (matters), that he-asws should get married to the daughter  (Amamah) of her-asws sister-as (Zainab-as) due to her love for her-asws children; and that he-asws should take a coffin (to be for her-asws) because she-asws had seen the Angels had imaged its image and she-asws described it to him-asws; and that no one from the ones who had oppressed her-asws should attend her-asws funeral and he-asws should not let anyone one of them to pray Salat upon her-asws’’.[9]

تَارِيخُ أَبِي بَكْرِ بْنِ كَامِلٍ قَالَتْ عَائِشَةُ عَاشَتْ فَاطِمَةُ بَعْدَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ص سِتَّةَ أَشْهُرٍ فَلَمَّا تُوُفِّيَتْ دَفَنَهَا عَلِيٌّ لَيْلًا وَ صَلَّى عَلَيْهَا عَلِيٌّ.

(The book) ‘Tareekh’ of Abu Bakr Bin Kamil – Ayesha (well-known fabricator) said,

‘(Syeda) Fatima-asws lived after Rasool-Allahazjwj for six months. When she-asws passed away, Ali-asws buried her-asws at night, and Ali-asws prayed Salat upon her-asws’’.[10] (this is a historical account and not a Hadith and from a non-Shia source)

11- كِتَابُ دَلَائِلِ الْإِمَامَةِ لِلطَّبَرِيِّ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ هَارُونَ بْنِ مُوسَى التَّلَّعُكْبَرِيِّ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ هَمَّامٍ عَنْ أَحْمَدَ الْبَرْقِيِّ عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عِيسَى عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِي نَجْرَانَ عَنِ ابْنِ سِنَانٍ عَنِ ابْنِ مُسْكَانَ عَنْ أَبِي بَصِيرٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع قَالَ: قُبِضَتْ فَاطِمَةُ ع فِي جُمَادَى الْآخِرَةِ يَوْمَ الثَّلَاثَاءِ لِثَلَاثٍ خَلَوْنَ مِنْهُ سَنَةَ إِحْدَى عَشْرَةَ مِنَ الْهِجْرَةِ وَ كَانَ سَبَبُ وَفَاتِهَا أَنَّ قُنْفُذاً مَوْلَى عُمَرَ لَكَزَهَا بِنَعْلِ السَّيْفِ بِأَمْرِهِ

The book ‘Dalail Al Imama’ of Al Tabari, from Muhammad Bin Haroun Bin Musa Al Talukbary, from his father, from Muhammad Bin Hammam, from Ahmad Al Barqy, from Ahmad Bin Muhammad Bin Isa, from Abdul Rahman Bin Abu Najran, from Ibn Sinan, from Ibn Muskan, from Abu Baseer,

‘From Abu Abdullah-asws having said: ‘(Syeda) Fatima-asws passed away during Jumadi Al-Aakhira on the day of Tuesday for three vacant from it (27th), of the year eleven from the Emigration, and the cause of her-asws expiry was that Qunfuz-la, a slave of Umar had thrusted her repeatedly with the hilt of the sword, by his orders.

فَأَسْقَطَتْ مُحَسِّناً وَ مَرِضَتْ مِنْ ذَلِكَ مَرَضاً شَدِيداً وَ لَمْ تَدَعْ أَحَداً مِمَّنْ آذَاهَا يَدْخُلُ عَلَيْهَا وَ كَانَ الرَّجُلَانِ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ النَّبِيِّ ص سَأَلَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ص أَنْ يَشْفَعَ لَهُمَا إِلَيْهَا فَسَأَلَهَا أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ع

So Muhassin-asws was miscarried martyred and she-asws fell ill from that with a severe illness, and did not let anyone from the ones who had hurt her-asws to enter to see her-asws, and they were two men (Abu Bakr and Umar) from the companions of the Prophet-saww. They asked Amir Al-Momineen-asws to intercede for them to see her-asws. Amir Al-Momineen-asws asked her-asws.

فَلَمَّا دَخَلَا عَلَيْهَا قَالا لَهَا كَيْفَ أَنْتِ يَا بِنْتَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ قَالَتْ بِخَيْرٍ بِحَمْدِ اللَّهِ ثُمَّ قَالَتْ لَهُمَا مَا سَمِعْتُمَا النَّبِيَ‏ يَقُولُ فَاطِمَةُ بَضْعَةٌ مِنِّي فَمَنْ آذَاهَا فَقَدْ آذَانِي وَ مَنْ آذَانِي فَقَدْ آذَى اللَّهَ

When they entered to see her-asws, they said to her-asws, ‘How are you-asws, O daughter-asws of Rasool-Allah-saww?’ She-asws said: ‘With goodness, by the Praise of Allah-azwj’. Then she-asws said to them: ‘Did you two nor hear from the Prophet-saww saying: ‘Fatima-asws is a part of me-saww, so the one who hurts her-asws had hurt me-saww, and one who hurts me-saww has hurt Allah-azwj’?’

قَالا بَلَى قَالَتْ فَوَ اللَّهِ لَقَدْ آذَيْتُمَانِي

They said, ‘Yes’. She-asws said: ‘By Allah-azwj! You two have hurt me-asws!’

قَالَ فَخَرَجَا مِنْ عِنْدِهَا ع وَ هِيَ سَاخِطَةٌ عَلَيْهِمَ

He (Abu Abdullah-asws) said, ‘They went out from her-asws presence and she-asws was angry upon them’.

قَالَ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ هَمَّامٍ وَ رُوِيَ أَنَّهَا قُبِضَتْ لِعَشْرٍ بَقِينَ مِنْ جُمَادَى الْآخِرَةِ وَ قَدْ كَمَلَ عُمُرُهَا يَوْمَ قُبِضَتْ ثَمَانِيَ عَشْرَةَ سَنَةً وَ خَمْساً وَ ثَمَانِينَ يَوْماً بَعْدَ وَفَاةِ أَبِيهَا فَغَسَلَهَا أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ع وَ لَمْ يَحْضُرْهَا غَيْرُهُ وَ الْحَسَنُ وَ الْحُسَيْنُ وَ زَيْنَبُ وَ أُمُّ كُلْثُومٍ وَ فِضَّةُ جَارِيَتُهَا وَ أَسْمَاءُ بِنْتُ عُمَيْسٍ

Muhammad Bin Hammam said, ‘And it is reported that she-asws passed away on ten vacant from Jumadi Al-Akhira (20th), and her-asws complete age on the day she-asws passed away was of eighteen years, and eighty five days after the expiry of her-asws father-saww. Amir Al-Momineen-asws washed her-asws and no one was present apart from him-asws, and Al-Hassan-asws,  and Al-Husayn-asws, and (Syeda) Zainab-asws, and (Syeda) Umm Kulsoom-asws, and Fizza-asws her-asws maid, and Asma Bint Umeys.

وَ أَخْرَجَهَا إِلَى الْبَقِيعِ فِي اللَّيْلِ وَ مَعَهُ الْحَسَنُ وَ الْحُسَيْنُ وَ صَلَّى عَلَيْهَا وَ لَمْ يَعْلَمْ بِهَا وَ لَا حَضَرَ وَفَاتَهَا وَ لَا صَلَّى عَلَيْهَا أَحَدٌ مِنْ سَائِرِ النَّاسِ غَيْرُهُمْ وَ دَفَنَهَا بِالرَّوْضَةِ وَ عَمَّى مَوْضِعَ قَبْرِهَا وَ أَصْبَحَ الْبَقِيعُ لَيْلَةَ دُفِنَتْ وَ فِيهِ أَرْبَعُونَ قَبْراً جُدُداً

And he-asws brought her-asws out to Al-Baqie (cemetery) during the night, and with him-asws were Al-Hassan-asws and Al-Husayn-asws, and he-asws prayed Salat upon her-asws, and did not let (anyone) know of it nor was anyone present at her-asws expiry, nor did anyone from rest of the people pray Salat upon her-asws apart from them-asws, and buried her-asws at an open field, and effaced the place of her-asws grave; and on the night she-asws was buried, Al Baqie became having forty new graves in it.

وَ إِنَّ الْمُسْلِمِينَ لَمَّا عَلِمُوا وَفَاتَهَا جَاءُوا إِلَى الْبَقِيعِ فَوَجَدُوا فِيهِ أَرْبَعِينَ قَبْراً فَأَشْكَلَ عَلَيْهِمْ قَبْرُهَا مِنْ سَائِرِ الْقُبُورِ فَضَجَّ النَّاسُ وَ لَامَ بَعْضُهُمْ بَعْضاً وَ قَالُوا لَمْ يُخَلِّفْ نَبِيُّكُمْ فِيكُمْ إِلَّا بِنْتاً وَاحِدَةً تَمُوتُ وَ تُدْفَنُ وَ لَمْ تَحْضُرُوا وَفَاتَهَا وَ الصَّلَاةَ عَلَيْهَا وَ لَا تَعْرِفُوا قَبْرَهَا

And when the Muslims came to know of her-asws expiry, they came to Al-Baqie and they found forty (new) graves in it, so her-asws grave was ambiguous upon them from rest of the graves. The people clamoured and blamed each other and said, ‘Your Prophet-saww did not leave behind among you all except for one daughter-asws. She-asws died and was buried, and you did not attend her-asws expiry, and the Salat upon her-asws, and you do not (even) know of her-asws grave’.

ثُمَّ قَالَ وُلَاةُ الْأَمْرِ مِنْهُمْ هَاتُمْ مِنْ نِسَاءِ الْمُسْلِمِينَ مَنْ يَنْبُشُ هَذِهِ الْقُبُورَ حَتَّى نَجِدَهَا فَنُصَلِّيَ عَلَيْهَا وَ نَزُورَ قَبْرَهَا

The the ruling authority from them (Abu Bakr) said, ‘Bring from the Muslim women one who can exhume these graves until we find her-asws, so we can pray Salat upon her-asws and visit her-asws grave!’

فَبَلَغَ ذَلِكَ أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ صَلَوَاتُ اللَّهِ عَلَيْهِ فَخَرَجَ مُغْضَباً قَدِ احْمَرَّتْ عَيْنَاهُ وَ دَرَّتْ أَوْدَاجُهُ وَ عَلَيْهِ قَبَاهُ الْأَصْفَرُ الَّذِي كَانَ يَلْبَسُهُ فِي كُلِّ كَرِيهَةٍ وَ هُوَ مُتَوَكِّئٌ عَلَى سَيْفِهِ ذِي الْفَقَارِ حَتَّى وَرَدَ الْبَقِيعَ

That reached Amir Al-Momineen-asws, may the Salawaat of Allah-azwj be upon him-asws, so he-asws came out angrily, his-asws eyes had reddened, and his-asws cheeks were flowing with tears, and upon him-asws was the yellow cloak which he-asws used to wear during every abhorrence, and he-asws was leaning upon his-asws sword Zulfiqar, until he-asws arrived at Al-Baqie.

فَسَارَ إِلَى النَّاسِ النَّذِيرُ وَ قَالُوا هَذَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ أَبِي طَالِبٍ قَدْ أَقْبَلَ كَمَا تَرَوْنَهُ يُقْسِمُ بِاللَّهِ لَئِنْ حُوِّلَ مِنْ هَذِهِ الْقُبُورِ حَجَرٌ لَيَضَعَنَّ السَّيْفَ عَلَى غَابِرِ الْآخِرِ

The warners came to the people and said, ‘This Ali-asws Bin Abu Talib-asws is coming like what you can see. He-asws is swearing by Allah-azwj, if you were to turn over even a stone from these graves, he-asws would place the sword upon every last one (of you)’.

فَتَلَقَّاهُ عُمَرُ وَ مَنْ مَعَهُ مِنْ أَصْحَابِهِ وَ قَالَ لَهُ مَا لَكَ يَا أَبَا الْحَسَنِ وَ اللَّهِ لَنَنْبُشَنَّ قَبْرَهَا وَ لَنُصَلِّيَنَّ عَلَيْهَا

Umar and the ones from his companions who were with him, met him-asws and said to him-asws, ‘What is the matter with you-asws, O Abu Al-Hassan-asws! By Allah-azwj! We shall exhume her-asws grave and we shall pray upon her-asws!’

فَضَرَبَ عَلِيٌّ ع بِيَدِهِ إِلَى جَوَامِعِ ثَوْبِهِ فَهَزَّهُ ثُمَّ ضَرَبَ بِهِ الْأَرْضَ وَ قَالَ لَهُ يَا ابْنَ السَّوْدَاءِ أَمَّا حَقِّي فَقَدْ تَرَكْتُهُ مَخَافَةَ أَنْ يَرْتَدَّ النَّاسُ عَنْ دِينِهِمْ وَ أَمَّا قَبْرُ فَاطِمَةَ فَوَ الَّذِي نَفْسُ عَلِيٍّ بِيَدِهِ لَئِنْ رُمْتَ وَ أَصْحَابُكَ شَيْئاً مِنْ ذَلِكَ لَأَسْقِيَنَّ الْأَرْضَ مِنْ دِمَائِكُمْ فَإِنْ شِئْتَ فَاعْرِضْ يَا عُمَرُ

Ali-asws struck his-asws hand to the total of his clothes, then struck him to the ground and said to him: ‘O son of darkness! As for my-asws right, so I-asws have left it fearing that the people would retract from their religion, and as for the grave of (Syeda) Fatima-asws, by the One-azwj is Who Hand is the soul of Ali-asws! If you and your companions were to dig anything from that, I-asws shall quench the ground from your blood! If you like, so turn away, O Umar!’

فَتَلَقَّاهُ أَبُو بَكْرٍ فَقَالَ يَا أَبَا الْحَسَنِ بِحَقِّ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ وَ بِحَقِّ مَنْ فَوْقَ الْعَرْشِ إِلَّا خَلَّيْتَ عَنْهُ فَإِنَّا غَيْرُ فَاعِلِينَ شَيْئاً تَكْرَهُهُ

Abu Bakr met him-asws. He said, ‘O Abu Al-Hassan-asws! By the right of Rasool-Allah-saww, and by the Right of the One-azwj above the Throne! Please leave from him, for we will not be doing anything you-asws dislike’.

قَالَ فَخَلَّى عَنْهُ وَ تَفَرَّقَ النَّاسُ وَ لَمْ يَعُودُوا إِلَى ذَلِكَ.

He-asws said: ‘So he-asws let him go, and the people dispersed, and they did not repeat to that’’.[11]

11- كِتَابُ دَلَائِلِ الْإِمَامَةِ لِلطَّبَرِيِّ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ هَارُونَ بْنِ مُوسَى التَّلَّعُكْبَرِيِّ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ هَمَّامٍ عَنْ أَحْمَدَ الْبَرْقِيِّ عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عِيسَى عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِي نَجْرَانَ عَنِ ابْنِ سِنَانٍ عَنِ ابْنِ مُسْكَانَ عَنْ أَبِي بَصِيرٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع قَالَ: قُبِضَتْ فَاطِمَةُ ع فِي جُمَادَى الْآخِرَةِ يَوْمَ الثَّلَاثَاءِ لِثَلَاثٍ خَلَوْنَ مِنْهُ سَنَةَ إِحْدَى عَشْرَةَ مِنَ الْهِجْرَةِ وَ كَانَ سَبَبُ وَفَاتِهَا أَنَّ قُنْفُذاً مَوْلَى عُمَرَ لَكَزَهَا بِنَعْلِ السَّيْفِ بِأَمْرِهِ

The book ‘Dalail Al Imama’ of Al Tabari, from Muhammad Bin Haroun Bin Musa Al Talukbary, from his father, from Muhammad Bin Hammam, from Ahmad Al Barqy, from Ahmad Bin Muhammad Bin Isa, from Abdul Rahman Bin Abu Najran, from Ibn Sinan, from Ibn Muskan, from Abu Baseer,

‘From Abu Abdullah-asws having said: ‘(Syeda) Fatima-asws passed away during Jumadi Al-Aakhira on the day of Tuesday for three vacant from it (27th), of the year eleven from the Emigration, and the cause of her-asws expiry was that Qunfuz-la, a slave of Umar had thrusted her repeatedly with the hilt of the sword, by his orders.

فَأَسْقَطَتْ مُحَسِّناً وَ مَرِضَتْ مِنْ ذَلِكَ مَرَضاً شَدِيداً وَ لَمْ تَدَعْ أَحَداً مِمَّنْ آذَاهَا يَدْخُلُ عَلَيْهَا وَ كَانَ الرَّجُلَانِ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ النَّبِيِّ ص سَأَلَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ص أَنْ يَشْفَعَ لَهُمَا إِلَيْهَا فَسَأَلَهَا أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ع

So Muhassin-asws was miscarried martyred and she-asws fell ill from that with a severe illness, and did not let anyone from the ones who had hurt her-asws to enter to see her-asws, and they were two men (Abu Bakr and Umar) from the companions of the Prophet-saww. They asked Amir Al-Momineen-asws to intercede for them to see her-asws. Amir Al-Momineen-asws asked her-asws.

فَلَمَّا دَخَلَا عَلَيْهَا قَالا لَهَا كَيْفَ أَنْتِ يَا بِنْتَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ قَالَتْ بِخَيْرٍ بِحَمْدِ اللَّهِ ثُمَّ قَالَتْ لَهُمَا مَا سَمِعْتُمَا النَّبِيَ‏ يَقُولُ فَاطِمَةُ بَضْعَةٌ مِنِّي فَمَنْ آذَاهَا فَقَدْ آذَانِي وَ مَنْ آذَانِي فَقَدْ آذَى اللَّهَ

When they entered to see her-asws, they said to her-asws, ‘How are you-asws, O daughter-asws of Rasool-Allah-saww?’ She-asws said: ‘With goodness, by the Praise of Allah-azwj’. Then she-asws said to them: ‘Did you two nor hear from the Prophet-saww saying: ‘Fatima-asws is a part of me-saww, so the one who hurts her-asws had hurt me-saww, and one who hurts me-saww has hurt Allah-azwj’?’

قَالا بَلَى قَالَتْ فَوَ اللَّهِ لَقَدْ آذَيْتُمَانِي

They said, ‘Yes’. She-asws said: ‘By Allah-azwj! You two have hurt me-asws!’

قَالَ فَخَرَجَا مِنْ عِنْدِهَا ع وَ هِيَ سَاخِطَةٌ عَلَيْهِمَ

He (Abu Abdullah-asws) said, ‘They went out from her-asws presence and she-asws was angry upon them’.

قَالَ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ هَمَّامٍ وَ رُوِيَ أَنَّهَا قُبِضَتْ لِعَشْرٍ بَقِينَ مِنْ جُمَادَى الْآخِرَةِ وَ قَدْ كَمَلَ عُمُرُهَا يَوْمَ قُبِضَتْ ثَمَانِيَ عَشْرَةَ سَنَةً وَ خَمْساً وَ ثَمَانِينَ يَوْماً بَعْدَ وَفَاةِ أَبِيهَا فَغَسَلَهَا أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ع وَ لَمْ يَحْضُرْهَا غَيْرُهُ وَ الْحَسَنُ وَ الْحُسَيْنُ وَ زَيْنَبُ وَ أُمُّ كُلْثُومٍ وَ فِضَّةُ جَارِيَتُهَا وَ أَسْمَاءُ بِنْتُ عُمَيْسٍ

Muhammad Bin Hammam said, ‘And it is reported that she-asws passed away on ten vacant from Jumadi Al-Akhira (20th), and her-asws complete age on the day she-asws passed away was of eighteen years, and eighty five days after the expiry of her-asws father-saww. Amir Al-Momineen-asws washed her-asws and no one was present apart from him-asws, and Al-Hassan-asws,  and Al-Husayn-asws, and (Syeda) Zainab-asws, and (Syeda) Umm Kulsoom-asws, and Fizza-asws her-asws maid, and Asma Bint Umeys.

وَ أَخْرَجَهَا إِلَى الْبَقِيعِ فِي اللَّيْلِ وَ مَعَهُ الْحَسَنُ وَ الْحُسَيْنُ وَ صَلَّى عَلَيْهَا وَ لَمْ يَعْلَمْ بِهَا وَ لَا حَضَرَ وَفَاتَهَا وَ لَا صَلَّى عَلَيْهَا أَحَدٌ مِنْ سَائِرِ النَّاسِ غَيْرُهُمْ وَ دَفَنَهَا بِالرَّوْضَةِ وَ عَمَّى مَوْضِعَ قَبْرِهَا وَ أَصْبَحَ الْبَقِيعُ لَيْلَةَ دُفِنَتْ وَ فِيهِ أَرْبَعُونَ قَبْراً جُدُداً

And he-asws brought her-asws out to Al-Baqie (cemetery) during the night, and with him-asws were Al-Hassan-asws and Al-Husayn-asws, and he-asws prayed Salat upon her-asws, and did not let (anyone) know of it nor was anyone present at her-asws expiry, nor did anyone from rest of the people pray Salat upon her-asws apart from them-asws, and buried her-asws at an open field, and effaced the place of her-asws grave; and on the night she-asws was buried, Al Baqie became having forty new graves in it.

فَضَرَبَ عَلِيٌّ ع بِيَدِهِ إِلَى جَوَامِعِ ثَوْبِهِ فَهَزَّهُ ثُمَّ ضَرَبَ بِهِ الْأَرْضَ وَ قَالَ لَهُ يَا ابْنَ السَّوْدَاءِ أَمَّا حَقِّي فَقَدْ تَرَكْتُهُ مَخَافَةَ أَنْ يَرْتَدَّ النَّاسُ عَنْ دِينِهِمْ وَ أَمَّا قَبْرُ فَاطِمَةَ فَوَ الَّذِي نَفْسُ عَلِيٍّ بِيَدِهِ لَئِنْ رُمْتَ وَ أَصْحَابُكَ شَيْئاً مِنْ ذَلِكَ لَأَسْقِيَنَّ الْأَرْضَ مِنْ دِمَائِكُمْ فَإِنْ شِئْتَ فَاعْرِضْ يَا عُمَرُ

فَتَلَقَّاهُ أَبُو بَكْرٍ فَقَالَ يَا أَبَا الْحَسَنِ بِحَقِّ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ وَ بِحَقِّ مَنْ فَوْقَ الْعَرْشِ إِلَّا خَلَّيْتَ عَنْهُ فَإِنَّا غَيْرُ فَاعِلِينَ شَيْئاً تَكْرَهُهُ

Abu Bakr met him-asws. He said, ‘O Abu Al-Hassan-asws! By the right of Rasool-Allah-saww, and by the Right of the One-azwj above the Throne! Please leave from him, for we will not be doing anything you-asws dislike’.

قَالَ فَخَلَّى عَنْهُ وَ تَفَرَّقَ النَّاسُ وَ لَمْ يَعُودُوا إِلَى ذَلِكَ.

He-asws said: ‘So he-asws let him go, and the people dispersed, and they did not repeat to that’’.[12]

ثُمَّ قَالَتْ‏

إِنَّ حُزْنِي عَلَيْكَ حُزْنٌ جَدِيدٌ وَ فُؤَادِي وَ اللَّهِ صَبٌّ عَنِيدٌ
كُلَّ يَوْمٍ يَزِيدُ فِيهِ شُجُونِي‏ وَ اكْتِيَابِي عَلَيْكَ لَيْسَ يَبِيدُ
جَلَّ خَطْبِي فَبَانَ عَنِّي عَزَائِي‏ فَبُكَائِي كُلَّ وَقْتٍ جَدِيدٌ
إِنَّ قَلْباً عَلَيْكَ يَأْلَفُ صَبْراً أَوْ عَزَاءً فَإِنَّهُ لَجَلِيدٌ

Then she-asws said (a poem): ‘My-asws grief upon you-saww is renewed grief, and by Allah-azwj, my-asws heart is difficult, stubborn. Every day my-asws sorrows increase in it, and my-asws writings upon you-saww will not deplete. My-asws sermons are majestic, and my-asws consolation is irrevocably distanced from me-asws. Thus my-asws crying is renewed all the time. If a heart can be more patient upon you-saww, or consoling, then it is just skin!’’

ثُمَّ نَادَتْ يَا أَبَتَاهْ انْقَطَعَتْ بِكَ الدُّنْيَا بِأَنْوَارِهَا وَ زَوَتْ زَهْرَتُهَا وَ كَانَتْ بِبَهْجَتِكَ زَاهِرَةً فَقَدِ اسْوَدَّ نَهَارُهَا فَصَارَ يَحْكِي حَنَادِسَهَا رَطْبَهَا وَ يَابِسَهَا

Then she-asws called out: ‘O father-saww! The world is cut off with its radiance by you-saww, and its blossoms are dimmed, and your-saww glory was blooming, so (now) its days are darkened and have become telling of the dark nights, its wet and its dry.

يَا أَبَتَاهْ لَا زِلْتُ آسِفَةً عَلَيْكَ إِلَى التَّلَاقِ يَا أَبَتَاهْ زَالَ غُمْضِي مُنْذُ حَقَّ الْفِرَاقُ يَا أَبَتَاهْ مَنْ لِلْأَرَامِلِ وَ الْمَسَاكِينِ وَ مَنْ لِلْأُمَّةِ إِلَى يَوْمِ الدِّينِ

O father-saww! I-asws not ceased to be sorry upon you-saww up to the separation. O father-saww! My-asws eyes have shut down since the reality of the separation. O father-saww! Who is for the widows and the poor? And who is for the community up to the Day of Religion (Qiyamah)?

يَا أَبَتَاهْ أَمْسَيْنَا بَعْدَكَ مِنَ الْمُسْتَضْعَفِينَ يَا أَبَتَاهْ أَصْبَحَتِ النَّاسُ عَنَّا مُعْرِضِينَ وَ لَقَدْ كُنَّا بِكَ مُعَظِّمِينَ فِي النَّاسِ غَيْرَ مُسْتَضْعَفِينَ فَأَيُّ دَمْعَةٍ لِفِرَاقِكَ لَا تَنْهَمِلُ وَ أَيُّ حُزْنٍ بَعْدَكَ عَلَيْكَ لَا يَتَّصِلُ وَ أَيُّ جَفْنٍ بَعْدَكَ بِالنَّوْمِ يَكْتَحِلُ

O father-saww! We-asws have become weakened, the evening after your-saww. O father-saww! The people have become turning away from us-asws, and we-asws used to be great among the people due to you-saww, not weakened! So, which tears of your-saww separation cannot be neglected? And which grief upon you-asws after you-saww cannot be connected? And which eyelid would be with the sleep after you-saww, being applied with kohl?

وَ أَنْتَ رَبِيعُ الدِّينِ وَ نُورُ النَّبِيِّينَ فَكَيْفَ لِلْجِبَالِ لَا تَمُورُ وَ لِلْبِحَارِ بَعْدَكَ لَا تَغُورُ وَ الْأَرْضُ كَيْفَ لَمْ تَتَزَلْزَلْ رُمِيتُ يَا أَبَتَاهْ بِالْخَطْبِ الْجَلِيلِ وَ لَمْ تَكُنِ الرَّزِيَّةُ بِالْقَلِيلِ وَ طُرِقْتُ يَا أَبَتَاهْ بِالْمُصَابِ الْعَظِيمِ وَ بِالْفَادِحِ الْمُهُولِ بَكَتْكَ

And you-saww are the nourisher of the religion, and Noor of the Prophets-as. So, how can it be for the mountains not to sway, and for the oceans not to subside after you-saww? How come the ground is not quaking? O father-saww with the solemn sermons! And the distress is not becoming any less, repeatedly. O father-saww! With the mighty calamity and in the terrible calamity I-asws cry for you-saww!

يَا أَبَتَاهْ الْأَمْلَاكُ وَ وَقَفَتِ الْأَفْلَاكُ فَمِنْبَرُكَ بَعْدَكَ مُسْتَوْحَشٌ وَ مِحْرَابُكَ خَالٍ مِنْ مُنَاجَاتِكَ وَ قَبْرُكَ فَرِحٌ بِمُوَارَاتِكَ وَ الْجَنَّةُ مُشْتَاقَةٌ إِلَيْكَ وَ إِلَى دُعَائِكَ وَ صَلَاتِكَ

O father-saww! The Angels and the skies are paused. Your-saww pulpit and your-saww prayer niche is lonely after you-saww, vacant from your-saww whisperings, and your-saww grave is happy with your-saww having embraced you-saww, and the Paradise is desirous to you-saww and to your-saww supplications and your-saww Salats.

يَا أَبَتَاهْ مَا أَعْظَمَ ظُلْمَةَ مَجَالِسِكَ فَوَا أَسَفَاهْ عَلَيْكَ إِلَى أَنْ أَقْدِمَ عَاجِلًا عَلَيْكَ وَ أُثْكِلَ أَبُو الْحَسَنِ الْمُؤْتَمَنُ أَبُو وَلَدَيْكَ الْحَسَنِ وَ الْحُسَيْنِ وَ أَخُوكَ وَ وَلِيُّكَ وَ حَبِيبُكَ وَ مَنْ رَبَّيْتَهُ صَغِيراً وَ وَاخَيْتَهُ كَبِيراً وَ أَحْلَى أَحْبَابِكَ وَ أَصْحَابِكَ إِلَيْكَ مَنْ كَانَ مِنْهُمْ سَابِقاً وَ مُهَاجِراً وَ نَاصِراً

O father-saww! How mighty is the injustice of your-saww gatherers! Oh the regret upon you-asws until I-asws arrive hastily to you-saww and bereave Abu Al-Hassan-asws, the trusted father-asws of your-saww (grand) sons-asws Al-Hassan-asws and Al-Husayn-asws, and your-saww brother-asws, and your-saww friend, and your-saww beloved, and the one whom you-saww nourished as young and established brother-hood with when older, and the sweetest of your-saww loved ones and your-saww companions to you-saww, one who had preceded, and emigrated, and helped.

وَ الثُّكْلُ شَامِلُنَا وَ الْبُكَاءُ قَاتِلُنَا وَ الْأَسَى لَازِمُنَا ثُمَّ زَفَرَتْ زَفْرَةً وَ أَنَّتْ أَنَّةً كَادَتْ رُوحُهَا أَنْ تَخْرُجَ

And the bereavement is encompassing us-asws, and the wailing is killing-asws, and the misery is attached to us-asws’. Then she-asws exhaled and exhalation and groaned such a groan, her-asws soul almost exited.

ثُمَّ قَالَتْ‏

قَلَّ صَبْرِي وَ بَانَ عَنِّي عَزَائِي‏ بَعْدَ فَقْدِي لِخَاتَمِ الْأَنْبِيَاءِ
عَيْنُ يَا عَيْنُ اسْكُبِي الدَّمْعَ سَحّاً وَيْكِ لَا تَبْخَلِي بِفَيْضِ الدِّمَاءِ
يَا رَسُولَ الْإِلَهِ يَا خَيْرَةَ اللَّهِ‏ وَ كَهْفَ الْأَيْتَامِ وَ الضُّعَفَاءِ
قَدْ بَكَتْكَ الْجِبَالُ وَ الْوَحْشُ جَمْعاً وَ الطَّيْرُ وَ الْأَرْضُ بَعْدُ بَكَى السَّمَاءُ

Then she-asws said (a poem): ‘My-asws patience is diminished, and my-asws consolation is irrevocably distanced from me-asws after my-asws losing the Seal of the Prophets-as. Eye, O eye! Pour out the tears like a stream and do not be stingy in pouring out the blood. O Rasool-saww of God-azwj! O Choice of Allah-azwj and cave for the orphans and the weak! The mountains and the beasts have cried upon you-saww altogether, and (so have) the birds, and the earth, after the crying of the sky.

وَ بَكَاكَ الْحَجُونُ وَ الرُّكْنُ وَ الْمَشْعَرُ يَا سَيِّدِي مَعَ الْبَطْحَاءِ
وَ بَكَاكَ الْمِحْرَابُ وَ الدَّرْسُ‏ لِلْقُرْآنِ فِي الصُّبْحِ مُعْلِناً وَ الْمَسَاءِ
وَ بَكَاكَ الْإِسْلَامُ إِذْ صَارَ فِي النَّاسِ‏ غَرِيباً مِنْ سَائِرِ الْغُرَبَاءِ
لَوْ تَرَى الْمِنْبَرَ الَّذِي كُنْتَ تَعْلُوهُ‏ عَلَاهُ الظَّلَامُ بَعْدَ الضِّيَاءِ
يَا إِلَهِي عَجِّلْ وَفَاتِي سَرِيعاً فَلَقَدْ تَنَغَّصَتِ الْحَيَاةُ يَا مَوْلَائِي‏

And the pilgrims, and the (Yemeni) corner, and the Monuments have cried upon you-saww, of my-asws Chief, along with Al Bat’ha, and the spout (of the Kaaba) cried over you-saww, and the open classes of the Quran in the morning and evening, and Al Islam cried upon you-saww when it came to be among the people, strangers from rest of the strangers. If only you-saww could see the pulpit which you-saww used to ascend it. The darkness is on top after the brightness. O my-asws God-azwj! Hasten my-asws expiry quickly, for the life is choking me-asws, O my-asws Master-azwj!

قَالَتْ ثُمَّ رَجَعَتْ إِلَى مَنْزِلِهَا وَ أَخَذَتْ بِالْبُكَاءِ وَ الْعَوِيلِ لَيْلَهَا وَ نَهَارَهَا وَ هِيَ لَا تَرْقَأُ دَمْعَتُهَا وَ لَا تَهْدَأُ زَفْرَتُهَا

She (Fizza-asws) said, ‘Then she-asws returned to her-asws house and took to the crying and the wailing, her-asws nights and her-asws days, and she-asws did not leave her-asws tears no limited her-asws exhalation.

وَ اجْتَمَعَ شُيُوخُ أَهْلِ الْمَدِينَةِ وَ أَقْبَلُوا إِلَى أَمِيرِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ع فَقَالُوا لَهُ يَا أَبَا الْحَسَنِ إِنَّ فَاطِمَةَ ع تَبْكِي اللَّيْلَ وَ النَّهَارَ فَلَا أَحَدٌ مِنَّا يَتَهَنَّأُ بِالنَّوْمِ فِي اللَّيْلِ عَلَى فُرُشِنَا وَ لَا بِالنَّهَارِ لَنَا قَرَارٌ عَلَى أَشْغَالِنَا وَ طَلَبِ مَعَايِشِنَا وَ إِنَّا نُخْبِرُكَ أَنْ تَسْأَلَهَا إِمَّا أَنْ تَبْكِيَ لَيْلًا أَوْ نَهَاراً

And the elders of the people of Al Medina gathered and they came to Amir Al-Momineen-asws. They said to him-asws, ‘O Abu Al-Hassan-asws! Fatima-asws is crying night and day, so there is no one from us who can get good sleep during the night upon our beds, nor is there any tranquility for us upon our occupations, and seeking of our livelihoods, and we are informing you-asws to ask her-asws, either she-asws should cry at night or at daytime’.

فَقَالَ ع حُبّاً وَ كَرَامَةً فَأَقْبَلَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ع حَتَّى دَخَلَ عَلَى فَاطِمَةَ ع وَ هِيَ لَا تُفِيقُ مِنَ الْبُكَاءِ وَ لَا يَنْفَعُ فِيهَا الْعَزَاءُ فَلَمَّا رَأَتْهُ سَكَنَتْ هُنَيْئَةً لَهُ فَقَالَ لَهَا يَا بِنْتَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ص إِنَّ شُيُوخَ الْمَدِينَةِ يَسْأَلُونِّي أَنْ أَسْأَلَكِ إِمَّا أَنْ تَبْكِينَ أَبَاكِ لَيْلًا وَ إِمَّا نَهَاراً

He-asws said: ‘Love and prestige (to you all)!’ Amir Al-Momineen-asws came until he-asws entered to see Fatima-asws, and she-asws was neither waking up (pausing) from the crying nor was the consoling beneficial to her-asws. When she-asws saw him-asws, she-asws calmed down being welcoming to him-asws. He-asws said to her-asws: ‘O daughter-asws of Rasool-Allah-saww! The elders of Al Medina are asking me-asws to ask you-asws, either you-asws should cry your-asws father-saww at night or at daytime’.

فَقَالَتْ يَا أَبَا الْحَسَنِ مَا أَقَلَّ مَكْثِي بَيْنَهُمْ وَ مَا أَقْرَبَ مَغِيبِي مِنْ بَيْنِ أَظْهُرِهِمْ فَوَ اللَّهِ لَا أَسْكُتُ لَيْلًا وَ لَا نَهَاراً أَوْ أَلْحَقَ بِأَبِي رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ص

She-asws said: ‘O Abu Al-Hassan-asws! How little is my-asws stay between them, and how near is my-asws absence from their midst. By Allah-azwj! I-asws will neither be silent at night nor at daytime, or I-asws join with my-asws father-saww Rasool-Allah-saww!’

فَقَالَ لَهَا عَلِيٌّ ع افْعَلِي يَا بِنْتَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ مَا بَدَا لَكِ ثُمَّ إِنَّهُ بَنَى لَهَا بَيْتاً فِي الْبَقِيعِ نَازِحاً عَنِ الْمَدِينَةِ يُسَمَّى بَيْتَ الْأَحْزَانِ وَ كَانَتْ إِذَا أَصْبَحَتْ قَدَّمَتِ الْحَسَنَ وَ الْحُسَيْنَ ع أَمَامَهَا وَ خَرَجَتْ إِلَى الْبَقِيعِ بَاكِيَةً فَلَا تَزَالُ بَيْنَ الْقُبُورِ بَاكِيَةً

Ali-asws said to her-asws: ‘O daughter-asws of Rasool-Allah-saww, do whatever comes to you-asws’. Then he-asws built a room for her-asws in Al Baqie (cemetery), remote from Al Medina, named as ‘The house of griefs’, and it was so that whenever it was morning, she-asws would place Al-Hassan-asws and Husayn-asws in front of her-asws and would go out to Al Baqie crying. So, she-asws would not cease to be between the graves, crying.

فَإِذَا جَاءَ اللَّيْلُ أَقْبَلَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ع إِلَيْهَا وَ سَاقَهَا بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ إِلَى مَنْزِلِهَا وَ لَمْ تَزَلْ عَلَى ذَلِكَ إِلَى أَنْ مَضَى لَهَا بَعْدَ مَوْتِ أَبِيهَا سَبْعَةٌ وَ عِشْرُونَ يَوْماً وَ اعْتَلَّتِ الْعِلَّةَ الَّتِي تُوُفِّيَتْ فِيهَا

So when the night would come, Amir Al-Momineen-asws would come to her-asws and escort her-asws in front of him-asws to her-asws house. And she-asws did not cease to be upon that until twenty-seven days had passed by for her-asws after the death of her-asws father-saww, and she-asws fell ill with the illness she-asws expired in.

فَبَقِيَتْ إِلَى يَوْمِ الْأَرْبَعِينَ وَ قَدْ صَلَّى أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ع صَلَاةَ الظُّهْرِ وَ أَقْبَلَ يُرِيدُ الْمَنْزِلَ إِذَا اسْتَقْبَلَتْهُ الْجَوَارِي بَاكِيَاتٍ حَزِينَاتٍ فَقَالَ لَهُنَّ مَا الْخَبَرُ وَ مَا لِي أَرَاكُنَّ مُتَغَيَّرَاتِ الْوُجُوهِ وَ الصُّوَرِ فَقُلْنَ يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ أَدْرِكْ ابْنَةَ عَمِّكَ الزَّهْرَاءَ ع وَ مَا نَظُنُّكَ تُدْرِكُهَا

She-asws remained up to the day forty, and Amir Al-Momineen-asws had prayed Salat Al Zohr, and he-asws came back intending the house, when the women neighbours came crying, grieving. He-asws said to them: ‘What is the news, and what is the matter I-asws am seeing you all changed of faces and images?’ They said, ‘O Amir Al-Momineen-asws! Go to the daughter-asws of your-asws uncle-saww Al Zahfra-asws, and we do not think you-asws will be able to get to her-asws (in time)’.

فَأَقْبَلَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ع مُسْرِعاً حَتَّى دَخَلَ عَلَيْهَا وَ إِذَا بِهَا مُلْقَاةٌ عَلَى فِرَاشِهَا وَ هُوَ مِنْ قَبَاطِيِّ مِصْرَ وَ هِيَ تَقْبِضُ يَمِيناً وَ تَمُدُّ شِمَالًا فَأَلْقَى الرِّدَاءَ عَنْ عَاتِقِهِ وَ الْعِمَامَةَ عَنْ رَأْسِهِ وَ حَلَّ أَزْرَارَهُ وَ أَقْبَلَ حَتَّى أَخَذَ رَأْسَهَا وَ تَرَكَهُ فِي حَجْرِهِ وَ نَادَاهَا يَا زَهْرَاءُ فَلَمْ تُكَلِّمْهُ

Amir Al-Momineen-asws came back quickly until he-asws entered to see her-asws, and there she-asws was, having thrown herself-asws upon her-asws bedspread, and it was from Egyptian sackcloth, and she-asws was gripping her-asws right hand and stretching her-asws left. He-asws cast off the robe from his-asws shoulder and the turban from his-asws head, and he-asws loosened his-asws waist band, and he-asws came until he-asws took her-asws head and placed it in his-asws lap and called out to her-asws: ‘O Zahra-asws!’ She-asws did not speak to him-asws.

فَنَادَاهَا يَا بِنْتَ مُحَمَّدٍ الْمُصْطَفَى فَلَمْ تُكَلِّمْهُ فَنَادَاهَا يَا بِنْتَ مَنْ حَمَلَ الزَّكَاةَ فِي طَرَفِ رِدَائِهِ وَ بَذَلَهَا عَلَى الْفُقَرَاءِ فَلَمْ تُكَلِّمْهُ فَنَادَاهَا يَا ابْنَةَ مَنْ صَلَّى بِالْمَلَائِكَةِ فِي السَّمَاءِ مَثْنَى مَثْنَى فَلَمْ تُكَلِّمْهُ فَنَادَاهَا يَا فَاطِمَةُ كَلِّمِينِي فَأَنَا ابْنُ عَمِّكَ عَلِيُّ بْنُ أَبِي طَالِبٍ

He-asws called out to her-asws: ‘O daughter-asws of Muhammad Al Mustafa-saww!’ She-asws did not speak to him-asws. He-asws called out to her-asws: ‘O daughter-asws of the one-saww who carried the Zakaat in an end of his-saww robe and distributed it upon the poor!’ She-asws did not speak to him-asws. So, he-asws called out to her-asws: ‘O Fatima-asws, speak to me-asws, for I-asws am the son-asws of your-asws uncle-as, Ali Bin Abu Talib-asws!’

قَالَ فَفَتَحَتْ عَيْنَيْهَا فِي وَجْهِهِ وَ نَظَرَتْ إِلَيْهِ وَ بَكَتْ وَ بَكَى وَ قَالَ مَا الَّذِي تَجِدِينَهُ فَأَنَا ابْنُ عَمِّكِ عَلِيُّ بْنُ أَبِي طَالِبٍ

He (the narrator) said, ‘She-asws opened her-asws eyes in his-asws face and looked at him-asws and she-asws cried, and he-asws cried, and said: ‘What is that which you-asws are feeling? I-asws am the son-asws of your-asws uncle-as Ali Bin Abu Talib-asws’.

فَقَالَتْ يَا ابْنَ الْعَمِّ إِنِّي أَجِدُ الْمَوْتَ الَّذِي لَا بُدَّ مِنْهُ وَ لَا مَحِيصَ عَنْهُ وَ أَنَا أَعْلَمُ أَنَّكَ بَعْدِي لَا تَصْبِرُ عَلَى قِلَّةِ التَّزْوِيجِ فَإِنْ أَنْتَ تَزَوَّجْتَ امْرَأَةً اجْعَلْ لَهَا يَوْماً وَ لَيْلَةً وَ اجْعَلْ لِأَوْلَادِي يَوْماً وَ لَيْلَةً

She-asws said: ‘O son-asws of the uncle-as! I-asws am feeling the death which there is no escape from it, nor is there any alternative way out from it, and I-asws know that after me-asws, you-asws will not be patient upon scarcity of the marriage. So, if you-asws do get married, then make a day and a night to be for her, and make a day and a night to be for my-asws children.

يَا أَبَا الْحَسَنِ وَ لَا تَصِحْ فِي وُجُوهِهِمَا فَيُصْبِحَانِ يَتِيمَيْنِ غَرِيبَيْنِ مُنْكَسِرَيْنِ فَإِنَّهُمَا بِالْأَمْسِ فَقَدَا جَدَّهُمَا وَ الْيَوْمَ يَفْقِدَانِ أُمَّهُمَا فَالْوَيْلُ لِأُمَّةٍ تَقْتُلُهُمَا وَ تُبْغِضُهُمَا

O Abu Al-Hassan-asws! And do not shout in their-asws faces, for they-asws would have become orphans, strangers, broken, for they-asws lost their-asws grandfather-saww yesterday, and today they-asws are losing their-asws mother-asws. So, woe be to the community who will be killing them-asws and hating them-asws!’

ثُمَّ أَنْشَأَتْ تَقُولُ‏

ابْكِنِي إِنْ بَكَيْتَ يَا خَيْرَ هَادٍ وَ اسْبِلِ الدَّمْعَ فَهُوَ يَوْمُ الْفِرَاقِ‏
يَا قَرِينَ الْبَتُولِ أُوصِيكَ بِالنَّسْلِ‏ فَقَدْ أَصْبَحَا حَلِيفَ اشْتِيَاقٍ‏
ابْكِنِي وَ ابْكِ لِلْيَتَامَى وَ لَا تَنْسَ قَتِيلَ الْعِدَى بِطَفِّ الْعِرَاقِ‏
فَارَقُوا فَأَصْبَحُوا يَتَامَى حَيَارَى‏ يَحْلِفُ اللَّهَ فَهُوَ يَوْمُ الْفِرَاقِ‏

Then she-asws prosed saying: ‘It would make me-asws cry if you-asws were to cry, O best of the guides and shed the tears, for it is a day of separation. O pair of the chaste! I-asws bequeath you-asws with the offspring, for they-asws have become allies of the craving. Cry and mourn for orphans and do not forget the slain by the enemies as Taff (Karbala) Al Iraq. They-asws are separating and becoming orphans, confused. And I-asws swear by Allah-azwj, it is the day of separation’.

قَالَتْ فَقَالَ لَهَا عَلِيٌّ ع مِنْ أَيْنَ لَكِ يَا بِنْتَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ هَذَا الْخَبَرُ وَ الْوَحْيُ قَدِ انْقَطَعَ عَنَّا

She (Fizza-asws) said, ‘Ali-asws said to her-asws: ‘From where is this news for you-asws, O daughter-asws of Rasool-Allah-saww, and the Revelation has been terminated from us-asws?’

فَقَالَتْ يَا أَبَا الْحَسَنِ رَقَدْتُ السَّاعَةَ فَرَأَيْتُ حَبِيبِي رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ص فِي قَصْرٍ مِنَ الدُّرِّ الْأَبْيَضِ فَلَمَّا رَآنِي قَالَ هَلُمِّي إِلَيَّ يَا بُنَيَّةِ فَإِنِّي إِلَيْكِ مُشْتَاقٌ فَقُلْتُ وَ اللَّهِ إِنِّي لَأَشَدُّ شَوْقاً مِنْكَ إِلَى لِقَائِكَ

She-asws said: ‘O Abu Al-Hassan-asws! I-asws lied down for a while and I-asws saw my-asws beloved Rasool-Allah-saww in a castle of white gems. When he-saww saw me-asws, he-saww said: ‘Come to me-saww O daughter-asws, for I-asws am yearning for you-asws!’ I-asws said: ‘By Allah-azwj! I-asws and intensely desirous to meet you-saww’.

فَقَالَ أَنْتِ اللَّيْلَةَ عِنْدِي وَ هُوَ الصَّادِقُ لِمَا وَعَدَ وَ الْمُوفِي لِمَا عَاهَدَ فَإِذَا أَنْتَ قَرَأْتَ يس فَاعْلَمْ أَنِّي قَدْ قَضَيْتُ نَحْبِي فَغَسِّلْنِي وَ لَا تَكْشِفْ عَنِّي فَإِنِّي طَاهِرَةٌ مُطَهَّرَةٌ وَ لْيُصَلِّ عَلَيَّ مَعَكَ مِنْ أَهْلِيَ الْأَدْنَى فَالْأَدْنَى وَ مَنْ رُزِقَ أَجْرِي وَ ادْفِنِّي لَيْلًا فِي قَبْرِي بِهَذَا أَخْبَرَنِي حَبِيبِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص

He-saww said: ‘Tonight you-asws will be with me-saww’, and he-saww is truthful of whatever he-saww promises, and fulfiller of whatever he-saww pacts. So, when you-asws have recited (Surah) ‘Yaseen’, then know that I-asws have fulfilled my-asws vow. So, wash me-asws and do not uncover from me-asws, for I-asws am already clean, Purified, and let them pray Salat upon me-asws, the closest of the closest of my-asws family, and the ones you-asws hire, and bury me-asws at night in my-asws grave. My-asws beloved Rasool-Allah-saww had informed me-asws with this’.

فَقَالَ عَلِيٌّ وَ اللَّهِ لَقَدْ أَخَذْتُ فِي أَمْرِهَا وَ غَسَّلْتُهَا فِي قَمِيصِهَا وَ لَمْ أَكْشِفْهُ عَنْهَا فَوَ اللَّهِ لَقَدْ كَانَتْ مَيْمُونَةً طَاهِرَةً مُطَهَّرَةً ثُمَّ حَنَّطْتُهَا مِنْ فَضْلَةِ حَنُوطِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ص وَ كَفَّنْتُهَا وَ أَدْرَجْتُهَا فِي أَكْفَانِهَا

Ali-asws said: ‘By Allah-azwj! I-asws did take with her-asws matter, and washed her-asws in her-asws shirt (clothes), and I-asws did not uncover from her. By Allah-azwj! She-asws was auspicious, clean, Purified. Then I-asws embalmed her from the remnants of the embalmnet of Rasool-Allah-saww, and enshrouded her-asws, and layered her-asws in her-asws shroud.

فَلَمَّا هَمَمْتُ أَنْ أَعْقِدَ الرِّدَاءَ نَادَيْتُ يَا أُمَّ كُلْثُومٍ يَا زَيْنَبُ يَا سُكَينَةُ يَا فِضَّةُ يَا حَسَنُ يَا حُسَيْنُ هَلُمُّوا تَزَوَّدُوا مِنْ أُمِّكُمْ فَهَذَا الْفِرَاقُ وَ اللِّقَاءُ فِي الْجَنَّةِ

When I-asws though of tying the robe, I-asws called out: ‘O Umm Kulsoom-asws! O Zainab-asws! O Sukaina-asws! O Fizza-asws! O Hassan-asws! O Husayn-asws! Come and provide (look) are your-asws mother-asws, for this is the separation and the meeting would be in the Paradise!’

فَأَقْبَلَ الْحَسَنُ وَ الْحُسَيْنُ ع وَ هُمَا يُنَادِيَانِ وَا حَسْرَتَا لَا تَنْطَفِئُ أَبَداً مِنْ فَقْدِ جَدِّنَا مُحَمَّدٍ الْمُصْطَفَى وَ أُمِّنَا فَاطِمَةَ الزَّهْرَاءِ يَا أُمَّ الْحَسَنِ يَا أُمَّ الْحُسَيْنِ إِذَا لَقِيتِ جَدَّنَا مُحَمَّداً الْمُصْطَفَى فَأَقْرِئِيهِ مِنَّا السَّلَامَ وَ قُولِي لَهُ إِنَّا قَدْ بَقِينَا بَعْدَكَ يَتِيمَيْنِ فِي دَارِ الدُّنْيَا

Al-Hassan-asws and Al-Husayn-asws came, and they-asws were calling out: ‘O regret which will not subside evere, from the loss our-asws grandfather-saww Muhammad Al Mustafa-asws and our-asws mother-asws Fatima Al Zahra-asws! O mother-asws of Al-Hassan-asws! O mother-asws of Al-Husayn-asws! When you-asws meet our-asws grandfather-saww Muhammad Al Mustafa-saww, then covey the greetings from us-asws and say to him-saww: ‘We-asws have remained as two orphans after you-saww in the house of the world!’

فَقَالَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ع إِنِّي أُشْهِدُ اللَّهَ أَنَّهَا قَدْ حَنَّتْ وَ أَنَّتْ وَ مَدَّتْ يَدَيْهَا وَ ضَمَّتْهُمَا إِلَى صَدْرِهَا مَلِيّاً وَ إِذَا بِهَاتِفٍ مِنَ السَّمَاءِ يُنَادِي يَا أَبَا الْحَسَنِ ارْفَعْهُمَا عَنْهَا فَلَقَدْ أَبْكَيَا وَ اللَّهِ مَلَائِكَةَ السَّمَاوَاتِ فَقَدِ اشْتَاقَ الْحَبِيبُ إِلَى الْمَحْبُوبِ

Amir Al-Momineen-asws saids: ‘I-asws testify to Allah-azwj! She-asws had groaned and sighed and extended her-asws and pressed it her-asws chest for a while, and there was a caller from the sky calling out: ‘O Abu Al-Hassan-asws! Raise them-asws both from her-asws. By Allah-azwj! The Angels of the skies have yearned the beloved to the beloved!’

قَالَ فَرَفَعْتُهُمَا عَنْ صَدْرِهَا وَ جَعَلْتُ أَعْقِدُ الرِّدَاءَ وَ أَنَا أُنْشِدُ بِهَذِهِ الْأَبْيَاتِ‏

فِرَاقُكِ أَعْظَمُ الْأَشْيَاءِ عِنْدِي‏ وَ فَقْدُكِ فَاطِمُ أَدْهَى الثُّكُولِ‏
سَأَبْكِي حَسْرَةً وَ أَنُوحُ شَجْواً عَلَى خَلٍّ مَضَى أَسْنَى سَبِيلٍ‏
أَلَا يَا عَيْنُ جُودِي وَ أَسْعِدِينِي‏ فَحُزْنِي دَائِمٌ أَبْكِي خَلِيلِي‏

Ali-asws said: ‘I-asws raised them-asws away from her-asws chest and went on to tie the robe, and I-asws prosed with these couplets: ‘Your-asws separation is the most grievous of the things with me-asws, and your-asws loss, Fatim-asws, is the most grievous bereavement. I-asws shall be crying in regret and lament upon the vacant past in the way. Indeed, O eye! Be good and make me-asws happy, for my-asws grief is constant crying my-asws friend-saww’.

ثُمَّ حَمَلَهَا عَلَى يَدِهِ وَ أَقْبَلَ بِهَا إِلَى قَبْرِ أَبِيهَا وَ نَادَى السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ يَا حَبِيبَ اللَّهِ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ يَا نُورَ اللَّهِ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ يَا صَفْوَةَ اللَّهِ مِنِّي السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ وَ التَّحِيَّةُ وَاصِلَةٌ مِنِّي إِلَيْكَ وَ لَدَيْكَ وَ مِنِ ابْنَتِكَ النَّازِلَةِ عَلَيْكَ بِفِنَائِكَ

Then he-asws carried her-asws upon his-asws hands and came with her-asws to the grave of her-asws father-saww and said: ‘The greetings be upon you-saww, O Rasool-Allah-saww! The greetings be upon you-saww, O Beloved of Allah-azwj! The greetings be upon you-saww, O Noor of Allah-azwj! The greetings be upon you-saww O elite of Allah-azwj! The greetings from me-asws to you-saww, and regards from me-asws to you-saww, and for you-saww and from your-saww daughter-asws descending to you-saww in your-saww courtyard.

وَ إِنَّ الْوَدِيعَةَ قَدِ اسْتُرِدَّتْ وَ الرَّهِينَةَ قَدْ أُخِذَتْ فَوَا حُزْنَاهْ عَلَى الرَّسُولِ ثُمَّ مِنْ بَعْدِهِ عَلَى الْبَتُولِ وَ لَقَدِ اسْوَدَّتْ عَلَيَّ الْغَبْرَاءُ وَ بَعُدَتْ عَنِّي الْخَضْرَاءُ فَوَا حُزْنَاهُ ثُمَّ وَا أَسَفَاهْ

And the entrustment has been returned, and the pledge has been taken. Oh its grief upon the Rasool-saww! Then from after him-saww, upon the chaste! And the earth has been darkened upon me-asws, and the greenery has been distanced from me-asws. Oh its grief! Then Oh its regret!’

ثُمَّ عَدَلَ بِهَا عَلَى الرَّوْضَةِ فَصَلَّى عَلَيْهِ فِي أَهْلِهِ وَ أَصْحَابِهِ وَ مَوَالِيهِ وَ أَحِبَّائِهِ وَ طَائِفَةٍ مِنَ الْمُهَاجِرِينَ وَ الْأَنْصَارِ

Then he-asws evenly laid her-asws upon the grass and there prayed Salat upon it among his-asws family, and his-asws companions, and his-asws friends, and his-asws beloved ones, an a group from the Emigrants and the Helpers.

فَلَمَّا وَارَاهَا وَ أَلْحَدَهَا فِي لَحْدِهَا أَنْشَأَ بِهَذِهِ الْأَبْيَاتِ يَقُولُ‏

أَرَى عِلَلَ الدُّنْيَا عَلَيَّ كَثِيرَةً وَ صَاحِبُهَا حَتَّى الْمَمَاتِ عَلِيلٌ‏
لِكُلِّ اجْتِمَاعٍ مِنْ خَلِيلَيْنِ فُرْقَةٌ وَ إِنَّ بَقَائِي عِنْدَكُمْ لَقَلِيلٌ‏
وَ إِنَّ افْتِقَادِي فَاطِماً بَعْدَ أَحْمَدَ دَلِيلٌ عَلَى أَنْ لَا يَدُومَ خَلِيلٌ‏

When he-asws had covered her-asws and buried her-asws in her-asws grave, he-asws prosed couplets saying: ‘I-asws see the problems of the world upon many (aspects) and accompany it until the sick one dies. For every unison of two friends, there is separation, and my-asws remaining with you all is for a little while, and my-asws losing Fatima-asws after Ahmad-saww is evidence upon that there is no permanent friend’’.[13]

19- كشف، كشف الغمة وَ نَقَلْتُ مِنْ كِتَابِ الذُّرِّيَّةِ الطَّاهِرَةِ لِلدُّولَابِيِّ فِي وَفَاتِهَا ع مَا نَقَلَهُ مِنْ رِجَالِهِ قَالَ: لَبِثَتْ فَاطِمَةُ بَعْدَ النَّبِيِّ ص ثَلَاثَةَ أَشْهُرٍ وَ قَالَ‏ ابْنُ شِهَابٍ سِتَّةَ أَشْهُرٍ وَ قَالَ الزُّهْرِيُّ سِتَّةَ أَشْهُرٍ وَ مِثْلُهُ عَنْ عَائِشَةَ وَ مِثْلُهُ عَنْ عُرْوَةَ بْنِ الزُّبَيْرِ

(The book) ‘Kashf Al Ghumma’ – And it is copied from the book ‘Al Zurriyat Al Taahira’ of Al Dowlaby, regarding her-asws expiry, what he transmitted from his men who said,

‘Fatima-asws remained alive after the Prophet-saww for three months’. And Ibn Shihab said, ‘Six months’. And Al-Zuhry said, ‘Six months’. And similar to it is from Ayesha, and similar to it is from Urwah Bin Al-Zubeyr.

وَ عَنْ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ ع خَمْساً وَ تِسْعِينَ لَيْلَةً فِي سَنَةِ إِحْدَى عَشْرَةَ وَ قَالَ ابْنُ قُتَيْبَةَ فِي مَعَارِفِهِ مِائَةَ يَوْمٍ وَ قِيلَ مَاتَتْ فِي سَنَةِ إِحْدَى عَشْرَةَ لَيْلَةَ الثَّلَاثَاءِ لِثَلَاثِ لَيَالٍ مِنْ شَهْرِ رَمَضَانَ وَ هِيَ بِنْتُ تِسْعٍ وَ عِشْرِينَ سَنَةً أَوْ نَحْوِهَا.

And from Abu Ja’far Muhammad-asws Bin Ali-asws, sixty-five nights in the year eleven’. And Ibn Quteyba said in ‘Ma’arifa’, ‘One hundred days’. And it is said she-asws passed away in the year eleven on the night of Tuesday of the third night from the month of Ramazan, and she-asws was twenty-nine years old or approximate to it’’.[14]

22- كا، الكافي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنِ ابْنِ مَحْبُوبٍ عَنِ ابْنِ رِئَابٍ‏ عَنْ أَبِي عُبَيْدَةَ قَالَ: سَأَلَ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع بَعْضُ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنِ الْجَفْرِ فَقَالَ هُوَ جِلْدُ ثَوْرٍ مَمْلُوءٌ عِلْماً

(The book) ‘Al Kafi’ – Muhammad Bin Yahya, from Ahmad Bin Muhammad, from Ibn Mahboub, from Ibn Raib, from Abu Ubeyda who said,

‘Abu Abdullah-asws was asked by one of our companions about the Jaf’r. So he-asws said: ‘It is an ox hide filled with knowledge’.

قَالَ لَهُ فَالْجَامِعَةُ قَالَ تِلْكَ صَحِيفَةٌ طُولُهَا سَبْعُونَ ذِرَاعاً فِي عَرْضِ الْأَدِيمِ مِثْلُ فَخِذِ الْفَالِجِ فِيهَا كُلُّ مَا يَحْتَاجُ النَّاسُ إِلَيْهِ وَ لَيْسَ مِنْ قَضِيَّةٍ إِلَّا وَ هِيَ فِيهَا حَتَّى أَرْشُ الْخَدْشِ

He said to him-asws, ‘So the Jami’e?’ He-asws said: ‘That is a lengthy Parchment of seventy cubits in width of the leather, like a thigh of the camel. Therein is everything what the people would be needy to, and there isn’t anything from a judgment except and it is therein, to the extent of the compensation for a scratch’.

قَالَ فَمُصْحَفُ فَاطِمَةَ ع قَالَ فَسَكَتَ طَوِيلًا ثُمَّ قَالَ إِنَّكُمْ لَتَبْحَثُونَ عَمَّا تُرِيدُونَ وَ عَمَّا لَا تُرِيدُونَ إِنَّ فَاطِمَةَ مَكَثَتْ بَعْدَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ص خَمْسَةً وَ سَبْعِينَ يَوْماً وَ كَانَ دَخَلَهَا حُزْنٌ شَدِيدٌ عَلَى أَبِيهَا وَ كَانَ جَبْرَئِيلُ يَأْتِيهَا فَيُحْسِنُ عَزَاءَهَا عَلَى أَبِيهَا وَ يُطَيِّبُ نَفْسَهَا وَ يُخْبِرُهَا عَنْ أَبِيهَا وَ مَكَانِهِ وَ يُخْبِرُهَا بِمَا يَكُونُ بَعْدَهَا فِي ذُرِّيَّتِهَا وَ كَانَ عَلِيٌّ ع يَكْتُبُ ذَلِكَ فَهَذَا مُصْحَفُ فَاطِمَةَ ع.

He said, ‘The Parchment of (Syeda) Fatima-asws?’ He-asws was silent for a long while, then said: ‘You all are exploring about what you need and about that which you do not need! Fatima-asws remained after Rasool-Allah-saww for seventy-five (75) days, and intense grief entered into her-asws for her-asws father-saww, and it was so that Jibraeel-as would come to her-asws and would give condolences upon her-asws father-saww, and that would better her-asws self, and he-as informed her-asws about her-asws father-saww, and his-saww place, and he-as informed her-asws with what would be happening after her-asws in her-asws children, and Ali-asws would write that down. So this is the Parchment of Fatima-asws’’.[15]

24- كا، الكافي الْعِدَّةُ عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنِ الْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ سَعِيدٍ عَنِ النَّضْرِ عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ سَالِمٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع قَالَ سَمِعْتُهُ يَقُولُ‏ عَاشَتْ فَاطِمَةُ بَعْدَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ص خَمْسَةً وَ سَبْعِينَ يَوْماً لَمْ تُرَ كَاشِرَةً وَ لَا ضَاحِكَةً تَأْتِي قُبُورَ الشُّهَدَاءِ فِي كُلِّ جُمْعَةٍ مَرَّتَيْنِ الْإِثْنَيْنَ وَ الْخَمِيسَ فَتَقُولُ ع هَاهُنَا كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ وَ هَاهُنَا كَانَ الْمُشْرِكُونَ.

(The book) ‘Al Kafi’ – The number, from Ahmad Bin Muhammad, from Al-Husayn Bin Saeed, from Al Nazr, from Hisham Bin Salim,

‘From Abdullah-asws, he (the narrator) said, ‘(Syeda) Fatima-asws lived after Rasool-Allah-saww for seventy-five days. She-asws was neither seen to have manifested her-asws teeth nor smiled. She-asws used to go to the graves of the martyrs twice during every week, Monday and Thursday. She-asws would say: ‘Over her was Rasool-Allah-saww and over there were the Polytheists’’.[16]

26- قل، إقبال الأعمال رُوِّينَا عَنْ جَمَاعَةٍ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا ذَكَرْنَاهُمْ فِي كِتَابِ التَّعْرِيفِ لِلْمَوْلِدِ الشَّرِيفِ‏ أَنَّ وَفَاةَ فَاطِمَةَ ع صَارَتْ يَوْمَ ثَالِثِ جُمَادَى الْآخِرَةِ.

(The book) ‘Iqbal Al Amaal’ – ‘We are reporting from a group of our companions we mentioned in the book ‘Al Tareef Al Mowlid Al Shareef’,

‘The expiry of (Syeda) Fatima-asws came on the third day of Jumadi Al-Aakhira’’.[17]

وَ عَنْ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ ع قَالَ: مَكَثَتْ فَاطِمَةُ ع فِي مَرَضِهَا خَمْسَةَ عَشَرَ يَوْماً وَ تُوُفِّيَتْ.

And from Abu Ja’far-asws having said: ‘(Syeda) Fatima-asws remained in her-asws illness for fifteen days and she-asws passed away’’.[18]

وَ عَنْ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ ع قَالَ: إِنَّ فَاطِمَةَ عَاشَتْ بَعْدَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ص سِتَّةَ أَشْهُرٍ.

And from Abu Ja’far-asws having said: ‘(Syeda) Fatima-asws lived after Rasool-Allah-azwj for six months’’.[19]

وَ عَنْ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ عَنْ آبَائِهِ ع‏ أَنَّ فَاطِمَةَ بِنْتَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ص عَاشَتْ بَعْدَ النَّبِيِّ ص سِتَّةَ أَشْهُرٍ مَا رُئِيَتْ ضَاحِكَةً وَ عَنْهُ ع أَنَّ فَاطِمَةَ كُفِّنَتْ فِي سَبْعَةِ أَثْوَابٍ.

And from Abu Ja’far-asws, from his-asws forefathers-asws: ‘(Syeda) Fatima-asws daughter-asws of Rasool-Allah-saww, lived after the Prophet-saww for six months. She-asws was not seen to be laughing’. And from him-asws: ‘Fatima-asws was enshrouded in seven clothes’’.[20]

وَ عَنْ حُسَيْنِ بْنِ عُلْوَانَ عَنْ سَعْدِ بْنِ طَرِيفٍ عَنْ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ ع قَالَ: بُدُوُّ مَرَضِ فَاطِمَةَ بَعْدَ خَمْسِينَ لَيْلَةً مِنْ وَفَاةِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ص فَعَلِمَتْ أَنَّهَا الْوَفَاةُ فَاجْتَمَعَتْ لِذَلِكَ تَأْمُرُ عَلِيّاً بِأَمْرِهَا وَ تُوصِيهِ بِوَصِيَّتِهَا وَ تَعْهَدُ إِلَيْهِ عُهُودَهَا وَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ع يَجْزَعُ لِذَلِكَ وَ يُطِيعُهَا فِي جَمِيعِ مَا تَأْمُرُهُ

And from Husayn Bin Ulwan, from Sa’ad Bin Tareyf,

‘From Abu Ja’far-asws having said: ‘The illness of Fatima-asws began after five nights from the expiry of Rasool-Allah-saww, so she-asws knew that it would be the expiry. She-asws gathered (her-asws affairs) for that. She-asws instructed Ali-asws with her-asws instruction and bequeathed him-asws with her-asws bequest, and pacted to him-asws with her-asws pact, and Amir Al-Momineen-asws fulfilled (all) that and obeyed her-asws in the entirety of what she-asws had instructed.

فَقَالَتْ يَا أَبَا الْحَسَنِ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ص عَهِدَ إِلَيَّ وَ حَدَّثَنِي أَنِّي أَوَّلُ أَهْلِهِ لُحُوقاً بِهِ وَ لَا بُدَّ مِمَّا لَا بُدَّ مِنْهُ فَاصْبِرْ لِأَمْرِ اللَّهِ تَعَالَى وَ ارْضَ بِقَضَائِهِ

She-asws said: ‘O Abu Al-Hassan-asws! Rasool-Allah-saww had made a pact to me-asws and narrated to me-asws that I-asws would be the first of his-saww family to join with him-saww, and there is no escape from it. So, be patient to the Command of Allah-azwj the Exalted, and be pleased with His-azwj Decree’.

قَالَ وَ أَوْصَتْهُ بِغُسْلِهَا وَ جَهَازِهَا وَ دَفْنِهَا لَيْلًا فَفَعَلَ

He (Abu Ja’far-asws) said: ‘And she-asws bequeathed him-asws with washing her-asws and preparing her (funeral) and her burial to be at night. He-asws did so’.

قَالَ وَ أَوْصَتْهُ بِصَدَقَتِهَا وَ تَرَكَتِهَا

He (Abu Ja’far-asws) said: ‘And she-asws bequeathed him-asws with her-asws charities and her-asws inheritance’.

قَالَ فَلَمَّا فَرَغَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ مِنْ دَفْنِهَا لَقِيَهُ الرَّجُلَانِ فَقَالا لَهُ مَا حَمَلَكَ عَلَى مَا صَنَعْتَ قَالَ وَصِيَّتُهَا وَ عَهْدُهَا.

He (Abu Ja’far-asws) said: ‘When Amir Al-Momineen-asws free from burying her-asws, two men (Abu Bakr and Umar) met him-asws. They said to him-asws, ‘What carried you-asws upon what you-asws did?’ He-asws said: ‘Her-asws bequest and her-asws pact’’.[21]

132- قب، المناقب لابن شهرآشوب جُمَلُ أَنْسَابِ الْأَشْرَافِ‏ أَنَّهُ زَحَفَ عَلِيٌّ ع بِالنَّاسِ غَدَاةَ يَوْمِ الْجُمُعَةِ لِعَشْرِ لَيَالٍ خَلَوْنَ مِنْ جُمَادَى الْآخِرَةِ سَنَةَ سِتٍّ وَ ثَلَاثِينَ عَلَى مَيْمَنَتِهِ الْأَشْتَرُ وَ سَعِيدُ بْنُ قَيْسٍ وَ عَلَى مَيْسَرَتِهِ عَمَّارٌ وَ شُرَيْحُ بْنُ هَانِئٍ وَ عَلَى الْقَلْبِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَبِي بَكْرٍ وَ عَدِيُّ بْنُ حَاتِمٍ وَ عَلَى الْجَنَاحِ زِيَادُ بْنُ كَعْبٍ وَ حُجْرُ بْنُ عَدِيٍّ وَ عَلَى الْكُمَّيْنِ عَمْرُو بْنُ الْحَمِقِ وَ جُنْدَبُ بْنُ زُهَيْرٍ وَ عَلَى الرَّجَّالَةِ أَبُو قَتَادَةَ الْأَنْصَارِيُّ وَ أَعْطَى رَايَتَهُ مُحَمَّدَ بْنَ الْحَنَفِيَّةِ

(The book) ‘Manaqib’ of Ibn Shehr Ashub – In a summary of (the book) ‘Ansaab Al Ashraaf’,

‘Ali-asws marched with the people going out on the day of Friday of the tenth night vacant from Jumadi Al-Akher of the year thirty-six. Upon the right flank were Al-Ashtar and Saeed Bin Qays, and upon the left flank were Ammar and Shureyh Bin Hany, and upon the heart (centre) were Muhammad Bin Abu Bakr and Udayy Bin Hatim, and upon the wings were Ziyad Bin Ka’ab and Hujr Bin Adayy, and upon the ambush (division) were Amro Bin Al-Hamiq and Jundab Bin Zuheyr, and upon the infantry was Abu Qatada Al-Ansari, and he-asws gave the flag to Muhammad Bin Al-Haneefa.

ثُمَّ أَوْقَفَهُمْ مِنْ صَلَاةِ الْغَدَاةِ إِلَى صَلَاةِ الظُّهْرِ يَدْعُوهُمْ وَ يُنَاشِدُهُمْ وَ يَقُولُ لِعَائِشَةَ إِنَّ اللَّهَ أَمَرَكِ أَنْ تَقَرِّي فِي بَيْتِكِ فَاتَّقِي اللَّهَ وَ ارْجِعِي وَ يَقُولُ لِطَلْحَةَ وَ الزُّبَيْرِ خَبَأْتُمَا نِسَاءَكُمَا وَ أَبْرَزْتُمَا زَوْجَةَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ص وَ اسْتَفْزَزْتُمَاهَا فَيَقُولَانِ إِنَّمَا جِئْنَا لِلطَّلَبِ بِدَمِ عُثْمَانَ وَ أَنْ يُرَدَّ الْأَمْرُ شُورَى

Then he-asws paused them for the morning Salat to Al-Zohr Salat, calling them and adjuring them. And he-asws said to Ayesha: ‘Allah-azwj Commanded you to dwell in your house, so fear Allah-azwj and return. And He-asws said to Talha and Al-Zubeyr: ‘You have hidden your wives (in your homes) and have brought forward the wife of Rasool-Allah-saww, and you provoked her saying, ‘But rather, we have come to seek the blood of Usman and to return the command to the consultation council (Shura)’.

وَ أُلْبِسَتْ عَائِشَةُ دِرْعاً وَ ضُرِبَتْ عَلَى هَوْدَجِهَا صَفَائِحُ الْحَدِيدِ وَ أُلْبِسَ الْهَوْدَجُ‏ دِرْعاً وَ كَانَ الْهَوْدَجُ لِوَاءَ أَهْلِ الْبَصْرَةِ وَ هُوَ عَلَى جَمَلٍ يُدْعَى عَسْكَراً

And Ayesha wore a coat of armour and struck an iron sheet upon her carriage, and the carriage was covered with a coat of armour, and the carriage was a flag for people of Al-Basra, and it was upon a camel called ‘Asker’’.

رَوَى ابْنُ مَرْدَوَيْهِ فِي كِتَابِ الْفَضَائِلِ مِنْ ثَمَانِيَةِ طُرُقٍ أَنَّ أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ع قَالَ لِلزُّبَيْرِ أَ مَا تَذْكُرُ يَوْماً كُنْتَ مُقْبِلًا بِالْمَدِينَةِ تُحَدِّثُنِي إِذْ خَرَجَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ فَرَآكَ مَعِي وَ أَنْتَ تَتَبَسَّمُ إِلَيَّ فَقَالَ لَكَ يَا زُبَيْرُ أَ تُحِبُّ عَلِيّاً فَقُلْتَ وَ كَيْفَ لَا أُحِبُّهُ وَ بَيْنِي وَ بَيْنَهُ مِنَ النَّسَبِ وَ الْمَوَدَّةِ فِي اللَّهِ مَا لَيْسَ لِغَيْرِهِ

It is reported by Ibn Mardawayh in the book ‘Al-Fazail Min Samaniya Turq’ – ‘Amir Al-Momineen-asws said to Al-Zubeyr, ‘Don’t you remember a day you had come to Al-Medina narrating to me-asws when Rasool-Allah-saww came out and saw you being with me-asws, and you were smiling at me-asws, so he-saww said to you: ‘O Zubeyr! Do you love Ali-asws?’ You said, ‘And how can I not love him-asws, and there is between me and him-saww, the lineage and the cordiality for the Sake of Allah-azwj what isn’t for others?’

فَقَالَ إِنَّكَ سَتُقَاتِلُهُ وَ أَنْتَ ظَالِمٌ لَهُ فَقُلْتَ أَعُوذُ بِاللَّهِ مِنْ ذَلِكَ

He-saww said: ‘You will be fighting against him-asws and you would be unjust to him-asws’. You said, ‘I seek Refuge with Allah-azwj from that’’.

وَ قَدْ تَظَاهَرَتِ الرِّوَايَاتُ أَنَّهُ قَالَ ع إِنَّ النَّبِيَّ ص قَالَ لَكَ يَا زُبَيْرُ تُقَاتِلُهُ ظُلْماً وَ ضَرَبَ كَتِفَكَ قَالَ اللَّهُمَّ نَعَمْ قَالَ أَ فَجِئْتَ تُقَاتِلُنِي فَقَالَ أَعُوذُ بِاللَّهِ مِنْ ذَلِكَ

And the reports have backed each other that he-asws said: ‘The Prophet-saww said to you: ‘O Zubeyr! You fill fight against him-asws unjustly, and he-asws will strike your shoulder’. He (Al-Zubeyr) said, ‘O Allah-azwj, yes!’ He-asws said: ‘So, have you come to fight me-asws?’ He said, ‘I seek refuge with Allah-azwj from that’.

ثُمَّ قَالَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ع دَعْ هَذَا بَايَعْتَنِي طَائِعاً ثُمَّ جِئْتَ مُحَارِباً فَمَا عَدَا مِمَّا بَدَا فَقَالَ لَا جَرَمَ وَ اللَّهِ لَا قَاتَلْتُكَ حِلْيَةُ الْأَوْلِيَاءِ

Then Amir Al-Momineen-asws said, ‘Leave this! You have pledged allegiance to me-asws willingly, then you have come for war, so what is wrong from what had appeared?’ He said, ‘No offence! By Allah-azwj I will not fight you-asws in the garb of friends’.

قَالَ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ أَبِي لَيْلَى فَلَقِيَهُ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ ابْنُهُ فَقَالَ جُبْناً جُبْناً فَقَالَ يَا بُنَيَّ قَدْ عَلِمَ النَّاسُ أَنِّي لَسْتُ بِجَبَانٍ وَ لَكِنْ ذَكَّرَنِي عَلِيٌّ شَيْئاً سَمِعْتُهُ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ص فَحَلَفْتُ أَنْ لَا أُقَاتِلَهُ فَقَالَ دُونَكَ غُلَامَكَ فُلَانٌ أَعْتِقْهُ كَفَّارَةً لِيَمِينِكَ-

Abdul Rahman Bin Abu Layli said, ‘His son Abdullah (Bin Al-Zubeyr) met him and said, ‘Coward! Coward!’ He (Al-Zubeyr) said, ‘O my son! I am not with cowardice, but Ali-asws reminded me of something I had heard it from Rasool-Allah-saww, so I have sworn an oath that I will not fight him-asws!’ He said, ‘Besides you is your so and so slave. Free him as an expiation for your oath (and then fight)’.

نُزْهَةُ الْأَبْصَارِ عَنِ ابْنِ مَهْدِيٍّ أَنَّهُ قَالَ هَمَّامٌ الثَّقَفِيُ‏

أَ يُعْتِقُ مَكْحُولًا وَ يَعْصِي نَبِيَّهُ- لَقَدْ تَاهَ عَنْ قَصْدِ الْهُدَى ثُمَّ عُوِّقَ
لَشَتَّانَ مَا بَيْنَ الضَّلَالَةِ وَ الْهُدَى- وَ شَتَّانَ مَنْ يَعْصِي الْإِلَهَ وَ يُعْتِقُ:

(The book) ‘Nuzhat Al-Absaar’ – From Ibn Mahdi, ‘Hammam Al-Saqafi said (a poem), ‘Will he free a black slave and disobey his Prophet-saww? He was strayed from his intent of guidance, then impeded to hover between the straying and the guidance, and he is not alike, one who disobeys his God and one who frees’’.

وَ فِي رِوَايَةٍ قَالَتْ عَائِشَةُ: لَا وَ اللَّهِ بَلْ خِفْتَ سُيُوفَ ابْنِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ أَمَا إِنَّهَا طِوَالٌ حِدَادٌ تَحْمِلُهَا سَوَاعِدُ أَنْجَادٌ وَ لَئِنْ خِفْتَهَا فَلَقَدْ خَافَهَا الرِّجَالُ مِنْ قَبْلِكَ فَرَجَعَ إِلَى الْقِتَالِ

And in a report – Ayesha said (during the battle), ‘No, by Allah-azwj! But you are fearing the swords of the son-asws of Abu Talib-asws. But, these are of long edges. The well-developed forearms tolerate it, and if you are fearing these, so the men from before you had feared. Return to the fighting!’

فَقِيلَ لِأَمِيرِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ع إِنَّهُ قَدْ رَجَعَ فَقَالَ دَعُوهُ فَإِنَّ الشَّيْخَ مَحْمُولٌ عَلَيْهِ ثُمَّ قَالَ أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ غُضُّوا أَبْصَارَكُمْ وَ عَضُّوا عَلَى نَوَاجِذِكُمْ وَ أَكْثِرُوا مِنْ ذِكْرِ رَبِّكُمْ وَ إِيَّاكُمْ وَ كَثْرَةَ الْكَلَامِ فَإِنَّهُ فَشَلٌ

It was said to Amir Al-Momineen-asws, ‘He (Al-Zubeyr) has returned’. He-asws said: ‘Leave him, for old man has a load upon him!’ Then he-asws said: ‘O you people! Bit upon your front teeth (be determined) and frequent from the remembrance of your Lord-azwj, and beware of too much talk for it would lead to failure!’

وَ نَظَرَتْ عَائِشَةُ إِلَيْهِ وَ هُوَ يَجُولُ بَيْنَ الصَّفَّيْنِ فَقَالَتِ انْظُرُوا إِلَيْهِ كَأَنَّ فِعْلَهُ فِعْلُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ص يَوْمَ بَدْرٍ أَمَا وَ اللَّهِ لَا يَنْتَظِرُ بِكَ إِلَّا زَوَالَ الشَّمْسِ

And Ayesha looked towards him-asws and he-asws was roaming between the rows. She said, ‘Look at him-asws! It is as if his-asws deed is a deed of Rasool-Allah-azwj on the day of (battle of) Badr. But, by Allah-azwj! He-asws will not wait for you except for the decline of the sun (midday)’.

فَقَالَ عَلِيٌّ ع يَا عَائِشَةُ عَمَّا قَلِيلٍ لَتُصْبِحُنَّ نَادِمِينَ فَجَدَّ النَّاسُ فِي الْقِتَالِ فَنَهَاهُمْ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَ قَالَ اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعْذَرْتُ وَ أَنْذَرْتُ فَكُنْ لِي عَلَيْهِمْ مِنَ الشَّاهِدِينَ ثُمَّ أَخَذَ الْمُصْحَفَ وَ طَلَبَ مَنْ يَقْرَؤُهُ عَلَيْهِمْ‏ وَ إِنْ طائِفَتانِ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ اقْتَتَلُوا فَأَصْلِحُوا بَيْنَهُما الْآيَةَ

Ali-asws said: ‘O Ayesha! After a little while you will become regretful!’ The people exerted for the fighting, but Amir Al-Momineen-asws forbade them and said: ‘O Allah-azwj! I-asws excuse and I-asws warned, so Be a Witness for me-asws against them!’ Then he-asws took the parchment (Quran) and sought one who could recite to them the Verse: And if two parties from the Momineen fight, then reconcile between them. [49:9].

فَقَالَ مُسْلِمٌ الْمُجَاشِعِيُّ هَا أَنَا ذَا فَخَوَّفَهُ بِقَطْعِ يَمِينِهِ وَ شِمَالِهِ وَ قَتْلِهِ فَقَالَ لَا عَلَيْكَ يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ فَهَذَا قَلِيلٌ فِي ذَاتِ اللَّهِ فَأَخَذَهُ وَ دَعَاهُمْ إِلَى اللَّهِ فَقُطِعَتْ يَدُهُ الْيُمْنَى فَأَخَذَهُ بِيَدِهِ الْيُسْرَى فَقُطِعَتْ فَأَخَذَهُ بِأَسْنَانِهِ فَقُتِلَ

Muslim Al-Mujashie said, ‘Here I am for that!’ But he-asws scared him they would be cutting off his right hand, and his left hand and kill him. He said, ‘(This is) not upon you-asws, O Amir Al-Momineen-asws! This is little for the Sake of Allah-azwj’. He-asws took him and he called them to Allah-azwj’. They cut off his right hand. He took it (the Quran) in his left hand, and it was (also) cut. He grabbed it with his tongue, and he was killed.

فَقَالَتْ أُمُّهُ‏

يَا رَبِّ إِنَّ مُسْلِماً أَتَاهُمْ- بِمُحْكَمِ التَّنْزِيلِ إِذْ دَعَاهُمْ‏
يَتْلُو كِتَابَ اللَّهِ لَا يَخْشَاهُمْ‏ فَرَمَّلُوهُ رُمِّلَتْ لِحَاهُمْ-

His mother said (a poem), ‘Muslim had gone to them with the Revealed Judgment when he called them, reciting the Book of Allah-azwj, not fearing them, and they sanded him with the sand of their beards’.

فَقَالَ ع الْآنَ طَابَ الضِّرَابُ [أي حلّ القتال‏] وَ قَالَ لِمُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْحَنَفِيَّةِ وَ الرَّايَةُ فِي يَدِهِ يَا بُنَيَّ تَزُولُ الْجِبَالُ وَ لَا تَزُلْ عَضَّ عَلَى نَاجِذِكَ أَعِرِ اللَّهَ جُمْجُمَتَكَ تِدْ فِي الْأَرْضِ قَدَمَيْكَ ارْمِ بِبَصَرِكَ أَقْصَى الْقَوْمِ وَ غُضَّ بَصَرَكَ وَ اعْلَمْ أَنَّ النَّصْرَ مِنَ اللَّهِ‏

He-asws said: ‘Now the striking is good!’ (i.e. the fighting is permissible). And he-asws said to Muhammad Bin Al-Hanafiyya and the flag was in his hands: ‘O my-asws son! Descend the mountain and do not cease to bite upon your front teeth (be determined). Lend your skull to Allah-azwj affirming your feet in the ground, shoot your eyes at the ends of the people and close your eyes, and know that the help is from Allah-azwj’.

ثُمَّ صَبَرَ سُوَيْعَةً فَصَاحَ النَّاسُ مِنْ كُلِّ جَانِبٍ مِنْ وَقْعِ النِّبَالِ فَقَالَ ع تَقَدَّمْ يَا بُنَيَّ فَتَقَدَّمَ وَ طَعَنَ طَعْناً مُنْكَراً وَ قَالَ‏

اطْعَنْ بِهَا طَعْنَ أَبِيكَ تُحْمَدْ لَا خَيْرَ فِي حَرْبٍ إِذَا لَمْ تُوقَدْ-
بِالْمَشْرَفِيِّ وَ الْقَنَا الْمُسَدَّدِ- وَ الضَّرْبِ بِالْخَطِّيِّ وَ الْمُهَنَّدِ-

Then he-asws was patient for a little while, and the people shouted from every side of the occurrence of the shooting arrows. He-asws said: ‘Go ahead, O my-asws son!’ He went ahead and stabbed evil stabbings and said (a couplet), ‘I am stabbing a stab your father would praise, there is no good in a war when it is not ignited by the nobles, and we meet the aim, and the strike with the line and the sharp sword’.

فَأَمَرَ الْأَشْتَرَ أَنْ يَحْمِلَ فَحَمَلَ وَ قَتَلَ هِلَالَ بْنَ وَكِيعٍ صَاحِبَ مَيْمَنَةِ الْجَمَلِ وَ كَانَ زَيْدٌ يَرْتَجِزُ وَ يَقُولُ‏

دِينِي دِينِي وَ بَيْعِي وَ بَيْعِي‏

He-asws ordered Al-Ashtar to attack. He attacked and killed Hilal Bin Wakie on the right of the camel, and Zayd was reciting a war couplet and said, ‘My Religion! My Religion! And My sale! My sale!

وَ جَعَلَ مِخْنَفُ بْنُ سُلَيْمٍ يَقُولُ‏

قَدْ عِشْتِ يَا نَفْسِ وَ قَدْ غَنَيْتِ‏ دَهْراً وَ قَبْلَ الْيَوْمِ مَا عَيِيتِ‏
وَ بَعْدَ ذَا لَا شَكَّ قَدْ فَنِيتِ- أَ مَا مَلِلْتِ طُولَ مَا حَيِيتِ-

And Mikhnaf Bin Suleym went on to say (a couplet), ‘You have lived, O soul, and you were enriched for a time, and before today, you have not been shamed, and after that, there is no doubt you will perish. Are you not bored for living a prolonged life?

فَخَرَجَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ الْيَثْرِبِيِّ قَائِلًا

يَا رَبِّ إِنِّي طَالِبٌ أَبَا الْحَسَنِ- ذَاكَ الَّذِي يُعْرَفُ حَقّاً بِالْفِتَنِ-

Abdullah Bin Al-Yasrabi came out saying (a poem), ‘O Lord-azwj! I seek Abu Al-Hassan-asws, that is the one-asws who recognises a truth from the Fitna’.

فَبَرَزَ إِلَيْهِ عَلِيٌّ ع قَائِلًا

إِنْ كُنْتَ تَبْغِي أَنْ تَرَى أَبَا الْحَسَنِ- فَالْيَوْمَ تَلْقَاهُ مَلِيّاً فَاعْلَمَنْ-

Ali-asws duelled to him-asws saying: ‘If you were seeking to see Abu Al-Hassan-asws, so today you have met him-asws for a while, so know!

وَ ضَرَبَهُ ضَرْبَةً مِجْزَمَةً [مِجْرَفَةً] فَخَرَجَ بَنُو ضَبَّةَ وَ جَعَلَ يَقُولُ بَعْضُهُمْ‏

نَحْنُ بَنُو ضَبَّةَ أَصْحَابُ الْجَمَلِ- وَ الْمَوْتُ أَحْلَى عِنْدَنَا مِنَ الْعَسَلِ-
رُدُّوا عَلَيْنَا شَيْخَنَا بِمُرْتَحَلٍ- إِنَّ عَلِيّاً بَعْدُ مِنْ شَرِّ النَّذَلِ-

And he-asws struck him with a final blow. So, the clan of Zabbah came out and one of them went on to say, ‘We are the clan of Zabbah, owners of the camel, and the death is sweeter with us than the honey. Our elders responded to us with a process upon us far from the evil of sorcery’.

وَ قَالَ آخَرُ

نَحْنُ بَنُو ضَبَّةَ أَعْدَاءُ عَلِيٍّ- ذَاكَ الَّذِي يُعْرَفُ فِيهِمْ بِالْوَصِيِ‏

And another one said, ‘We are the clan of Zabbah, enemies of Ali-asws! That is the one who is known among them as the successor-asws!

وَ كَانَ عَمْرُو بْنُ الْيَثْرِبِيِّ يَقُولُ‏

إِنْ تُنْكِرُونِي فَأَنَا ابْنُ الْيَثْرِبِيِّ- قَاتِلُ عِلْبَاءٍ وَ هِنْدِ الْجَمَلِ-
ثُمَّ ابْنِ صُوحَانَ عَلَى دِينِ عَلِيٍ‏

And Amro Bin Al-Yasrabi was saying, ‘If you are denying me, so I am a son of Al-Yasrabi, fighter of a tired group of camels. Then the son of Sowhan is upon the Religion of Ali-asws’.

فَبَرَزَ إِلَيْهِ عَمَّارٌ قَائِلًا

لَا تَبْرَحِ الْعَرْصَةَ يَا ابْنَ الْيَثْرِبِيِّ- أَثْبِتْ أُقَاتِلْكَ عَلَى دِينِ عَلِيٍّ-

Ammar went duelling to him saying, ‘Do not come out to the plains, O son of Al-Yasrabi! I am come to fight you upon the Religion of Ali-asws!

فَطَعَنَهُ وَ أَرْدَاهُ عَنْ فَرَسِهِ وَ جَرَّ بِرِجْلِهِ إِلَى عَلِيٍّ فَقَتَلَهُ بِيَدِهِ فَخَرَجَ أَخُوهُ قَائِلًا

أَضْرِبُكُمْ وَ لَوْ أَرَى عَلِيّاً عَمَّمْتُهُ أَبْيَضَ مَشْرَفِيّاً
وَ أَسْمَراً عَنَطْنَطاً خَطِّيّاً أَبْكِي عَلَيْهِ الْوَلَدَ وَ الْوَلِيَّا-

He stabbed him and threw him off his horse, and dragged him by his legs to Ali-asws, and he-asws killed him with his-asws hands. His brother came out saying, ‘I will strike you all, and if I were to see Ali-asws, I would generalise him-asws, white, honourable, and a brown linear line, the children and the friends would cry upon him-asws!

فَخَرَجَ إِلَيْهِ عَلِيٌّ ع مُتَنَكِّراً وَ هُوَ يَقُولُ‏

يَا طَالِباً فِي حَرْبِهِ عَلِيّاً- يَمْنَحُهُ أَبْيَضَ مَشْرَفِيّاً
أَثْبِتْ سَتَلْقَاهُ بِهَا مَلِيّاً- مُهَذَّباً سَمَيْدَعاً كَمِيّاً-

Ali-asws came out to him in a veil and he-asws was saying: ‘O seeker of Ali-asws in his battle, granting him-asws white honour. Stay firm, you will meet him for a while, polite, listening, courageous’.

فَضَرَبَهُ فَرَمَى نِصْفَ رَأْسِهِ فَنَادَاهُ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ خَلَفٍ الْخُزَاعِيُّ صَاحِبُ مَنْزِلِ عَائِشَةَ بِالْبَصْرَةِ أَ تُبَارِزُنِي فَقَالَ عَلِيٌّ ع مَا أَكْرَهُ ذَلِكَ وَ لَكِنْ وَيْحَكَ يَا ابْنَ خَلَفٍ مَا رَاحَتُكَ فِي الْقَتْلِ وَ قَدْ عَلِمْتَ مَنْ أَنَا فَقَالَ ذَرْنِي مِنْ بَذَخِكَ يَا ابْنَ أَبِي طَالِبٍ

He-asws struck him and threw away half his head. Abdullah Bin Khalaf Al-Khuzaie, owner of the house of Ayesha at Al-Basra, called out to him-asws, ‘Will you-asws duel me?’ Ali-asws said: ‘I-asws do not dislike that, but woe be unto you, O Ibn Khalaf! There is no rest for you in the killing, and you have known who I-asws am’. He said, ‘Leave me from your-asws lavishness, O son-asws of Abu Talib-asws’.

ثُمَّ قَالَ‏

إِنْ تَدْنُ مِنِّي يَا عَلِيُّ فِتْراً- فَإِنَّنِي دَانٍ إِلَيْكَ شِبْراً
بِصَارِمٍ يَسْقِيكَ كَأْساً مُرّاً- هَا إِنَّ فِي صَدْرِي عَلَيْكَ وَتْراً-

Then he said, ‘If you-asws come near me for a period, I will come near you a palm’s width with sharpness, quenching you a bitter cup. Here in my chest there is a chord against you-asws’.

فَبَرَزَ عَلِيٌّ ع قَائِلًا

يَا ذَا الَّذِي يَطْلُبُ مِنِّي الْوَتْرَا- إِنْ كُنْتَ تَبْغِي أَنْ تَزُورَ الْقَبْرَا
حَقّاً وَ تَصْلَى بَعْدَ ذَاكَ جَمْراً- فَادْنُ تَجِدْنِي أَسَداً هِزَبْراً
أُصْعِطُكَ الْيَوْمَ زُعَاقاً صَبْراً-

Ali-asws duelled saying: ‘O one who is seeking the chord from me-asws. If you are seeking, then visit the graves for reality, and you will arrive after that to the embers. Come near, you will find me-asws a ferocious lion. Today I-asws shall give you a taste of combat’.

فَضَرَبَهُ فَطَيَّرَ جُمْجُمَتَهُ فَخَرَجَ مَازِنٌ الضَّبِّيُّ قَائِلًا

لَا تَطْمَعُوا فِي جَمْعِنَا الْمُكَلَّلِ- الْمَوْتُ دُونَ الْجَمَلِ الْمُجَلَّلِ-

He-asws struck him and his skull flew away. Mazin Al-Zaby came out saying, ‘Do not covet the fatigue in our forces. The death under the camel, is majestic’.

فَبَرَزَ إِلَيْهِ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ نَهْشَلٍ قَائِلًا

إِنْ تُنْكِرُونِي فَأَنَا ابْنُ نَهْشَلٍ- فَارِسُ هَيْجَا وَ خَطِيبُ فَيْصَلٍ-

Abdullah Bin Nahshal duelled to him-asws saying, ‘If you-asws are denying me, so I am a son of Nahshal, an agitating horseman and a decisive speaker’.

فَقَتَلَهُ وَ كَانَ طَلْحَةُ يَحُثُّ النَّاسَ وَ يَقُولُ عِبَادَ اللَّهِ الصَّبْرَ الصَّبْرَ:

He-asws killed him, and Talha was urging the people and saying, ‘Servants of Allah-azwj, the combat! The combat!’

فِي كَلَامٍ لَهُ الْبَلاذُرِيُ‏ قَالَ: إِنَّ مَرْوَانَ بْنَ الْحَكَمِ قَالَ وَ اللَّهِ مَا أَطْلُبُ ثَارِي بِعُثْمَانَ بَعْدَ الْيَوْمِ أَبَداً فَرَمَى طَلْحَةَ بِسَهْمٍ فَأَصَابَ رُكْبَتَهُ وَ الْتَفَتَ إِلَى أَبَانِ بْنِ عُثْمَانَ وَ قَالَ لَقَدْ كَفَيْتُكَ أَحَدَ قَتَلَةِ أَبِيكَ: مَعَارِفُ الْقُتَيْبِيِّ: إِنَّ مَرْوَانَ قَتَلَ طَلْحَةَ يَوْمَ الْجَمَلِ بِسَهْمٍ فَأَصَابَ سَاقَهُ:

In a speech of his, Al-Balazuri said, ‘Marwan Bin Al-Hakam said, ‘By Allah-azwj! I will not seek my retaliation with Usman after today, ever!’ Talha shot (an arrow) at him and injured his shoulder, and he turned towards Aban Bin Usman and said, ‘I have sufficed you today with one of the killers of your father’. Marouf Al-Quteybi (said), ‘Marwan killed Talha on the day of the camel by an arrow and injured his leg’.

وَ قَالَ السَّيِّدُ الْحِمْيَرِيُ‏

وَ اخْتَلَّ مِنْ طَلْحَةَ الْمَزْهُوِّ جُنَّتُهُ- سَهْمٌ بِكَفِّ قَدِيمِ الْكُفْرِ غَدَّارٍ
فِي كَفِّ مَرْوَانَ مَرْوَانَ اللَّعِينِ أَرَى- رَهْطَ الْمُلُوكِ مُلُوكِ غَيْرِ أَخْيَارٍ-

And the Seyyid Al-Himeyri said, ‘And there was a disturbance from Talha, the greed of his shield, and arrow by an old hand of Kufr, treachery in a palm of Marwan, Marwan the accursed, I see the group of kings, kings other than good’.

وَ لَهُ‏

وَ اغْتَرَّ طَلْحَةَ عِنْدَ مُخْتَلَفِ الْقَنَا- عَبْلُ الذِّرَاعِ شَدِيدُ أَصْلِ الْمَنْكِبِ‏
فَاخْتَلَّ حَبَّةَ قَلْبِهِ بِمُدْلِقٍ- رَيَّانُ مِنْ دَمِ جَوْفِهِ الْمُتَصَبِّبُ‏
فِي مَارِقِينَ مِنَ الْجَمَاعَةِ فَارَقُوا- بَابَ الْهُدَى وَحْياً الرَّبِيعُ الْمُخْصِبُ-

And for him, ‘And Talha was deceived at different channels, by the forearm of strong origin. The seed of his heart was broken by a puddle of blood in the interior of his sore cavity, among renegades from a group which had separated from the door of guidance, the fertile spring’.

وَ حَمَلَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ عَلَى بَنِي ضَبَّةَ فَمَا رَأَيْتُهُمْ إِلَّا كَرَمادٍ اشْتَدَّتْ بِهِ الرِّيحُ فِي يَوْمٍ عاصِفٍ‏ فَانْصَرَفَ الزُّبَيْرُ فَتَبِعَهُ عَمْرُو بْنُ جُرْمُوزٍ وَ جَزَّ رَأْسَهُ وَ أَتَى بِهِ إِلَى أَمِيرِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ع الْقِصَّةَ:

And Amir Al-Momineen-asws attacked upon the son of Zabiya, and they were not seen except as like ashes the wind blows hard upon during a stormy day. [14:18]. Al-Zubeyr left, and Amro Bin Jurmuz pursued him, cut off his head and came with it to Amir Al-Momineen-asws – the story.

قَالَ السَّيِّدُ إِسْمَاعِيلُ الْحِمْيَرِيُ‏

أَمَّا الزُّبَيْرُ فَحَاصَ حِينَ بَدَتْ لَهُ- جَاءُوا بِبَرْقٍ فِي الْحَدِيدِ الْأَشْهَبِ‏
حَتَّى إِذَا أَمِنَ الْحُتُوفَ وَ تَحْتَهُ- عَارِي النَّوَاهِقِ ذُو نَجَاءٍ صهلب‏
أَثْوَى ابْنُ جُرْمُوزٍ عُمَيْرٌ شِلْوَهُ- بِالْقَاعِ مُنْعَفِراً كَشِلْوِ التَّوْلَبِ:

The Seyyid Ismail Al-Himeyri said, ‘As for Al-Zubeyr, he fled when it appeared to him that they had come with lightning in the iron meteors, until when he felt safe from death, and under him was shame of the fleeing like a juvenile, the youngest being Ibn Jurmuz Umeyra. He turned away fleeing like the shooting arrows’.

وَ قَالَ غَيْرُهُ‏

طَارَ الزُّبَيْرُ عَلَى إِحْصَارِ ذِي خَضِلٍ- عَبْلُ الشَّوَى لَاحِقُ الْمَتِينِ مِحْصَارٌ
حَتَّى أَتَى وَادِياً لَاقَى الْحَمَامَ بِهِ- مِنْ كَفِّ مُحْتَبِسٍ كَالصَّيْدِ مِغْوَارٌ-

And someone else said, ‘Zubeyr flew over the siege of the ones with wetness of the plump, to join up with the dead surrounding him, until he came to a valley he met the doves at it, from a palm of the hunter’s trap, like fishing’.

فَقَالُوا يَا عَائِشَةُ قُتِلَ طَلْحَةُ وَ الزُّبَيْرُ وَ جُرِحَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عَامِرٍ كَذَا مِنْ يَدَيْ عَلِيٍّ فَصَالِحِي عَلِيّاً

They said, ‘O Ayesha! Talha and Al-Zubeyr have been killed, and Abdullah Bin Aamir has been injured like that from the hands of Ali-asws, so reconcile with Ali-asws’.

فَقَالَتْ كَبِرَ عَمْرٌو عَنِ الطَّوْقِ وَ جَلَّ أَمْرٌ عَنِ الْعِتَابِ ثُمَّ تَقَدَّمَتْ فَحَزِنَ عَلِيٌّ ع وَ قَالَ‏ إِنَّا لِلَّهِ وَ إِنَّا إِلَيْهِ راجِعُونَ‏ فَجَعَلَ يَخْرُجُ وَاحِدٌ بَعْدَ وَاحِدٍ وَ يَأْخُذُ الزِّمَامَ حَتَّى قُتِلَ [قُطِعَ‏] ثَمَانٌ وَ تِسْعُونَ رَجُلًا

She said, ‘Amro has become larger than the collar, and the matter is clearer than the reproach’. Then she went ahead and Ali-asws was said and said: ‘We are for Allah-azwj are returning to Him-azwj’. He-asws went one taking out one after one, and he-asws grabbed the rein until he-asws had killed seventy-eight men.

ثُمَّ تَقَدَّمَهُمْ كَعْبُ بْنُ سُورٍ الْأَزْدِيُّ وَ هُوَ يَقُولُ‏

يَا مَعْشَرَ النَّاسِ عَلَيْكُمْ أُمَّكُمْ‏ فَإِنَّهَا صَلَاتُكُمْ وَ صَوْمُكُمْ‏
وَ الْحُرْمَةُ الْعُظْمَى الَّتِي تَعُمُّكُمْ- لَا تَفْضَحُوا الْيَوْمَ فِدَاكُمْ قَوْمُكُمْ-

Then Ka’ab Bin Sowr Al-Azdy preceded them and he was saying, ‘O community of people! Upon you all is your mother, for she is your Salat and your Fast, and the great sanctity which has blinded you. Do not be ashamed today, your people will ransom you’.

فَقَتَلَهُ الْأَشْتَرُ فَخَرَجَ ابْنُ جُفَيْرٍ الْأَزْدِيُّ يَقُولُ‏

قَدْ وَقَعَ الْأَمْرُ بِمَا لَمْ يُحْذَرْ- وَ النَّبْلَ يَأْخُذَنْ وَرَاءَ الْعَسْكَرِ
وَ أُمُّنَا فِي خِدْرِهَا الْمُشَمَّرِ-

Al-Ashtar killed him. Ibn Jufeyr Al-Azdy came out saying, ‘The matter has occurred with what had not been cautioned, and the archers were taken behind the soldiers, and our mother is tucked up in her veil’.

فَبَرَزَ إِلَيْهِ الْأَشْتَرُ قَائِلًا

اسْمَعْ وَ لَا تَعْجَلْ جَوَابَ الْأَشْتَرِ- وَ اقْرُبْ تُلَاقِ كَأْسَ مَوْتٍ أَحْمَرَ
يُنْسِيكَ ذِكْرَ الْجَمَلِ الْمُشَمَّرِ-

Al-Ashtar duelled to him saying, ‘Listen and do not be hasty to the answer of Al-Ashtar, and very soon you will meet the cup of red death. You are forgetting the mention of the reddish camel’.

فَقَتَلَهُ ثُمَّ قَتَلَ عُمَرَ الْغَنَوِيَّ وَ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ عَتَّابِ بْنِ أَسِيدٍ ثُمَّ جَالَ فِي الْمَيْدَانِ جَوْلًا وَ هُوَ يَقُولُ‏

نَحْنُ بَنُو الْمَوْتِ بِهِ غُذِّينَا

He killed him, then killed Umar Al-Ghanawy and Abdullah Bin Attb Bin Aseyd, then he roamed in the battlefield with a roaming and he was saying, ‘We are the sons of death, by it we get provided (nourished)’.

فَخَرَجَ إِلَيْهِ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ الزُّبَيْرِ فَطَعَنَهُ الْأَشْتَرُ وَ أَرْدَاهُ وَ جَلَسَ عَلَى صَدْرِهِ لِيَقْتُلَهُ فَصَاحَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ اقْتُلُونِي وَ مَالِكاً وَ اقْتُلُوا مَالِكاً مَعِي فَقَصَدَ إِلَيْهِ مِنْ كُلِّ جَانِبِ فَخَلَّاهُ وَ رَكِبَ فَرَسَهُ فَلَمَّا رَأَوْهُ رَاكِباً تَفَرَّقُوا عَنْهُ وَ شَدَّ رَجُلٌ مِنَ الْأَزْدِ عَلَى مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْحَنَفِيَّةِ وَ هُوَ يَقُولُ يَا مَعْشَرَ الْأَزْدِ كُرُّوا فَضَرَبَهُ ابْنُ الْحَنَفِيَّةِ فَقَطَعَ يَدَهُ فَقَالَ يَا مَعْشَرَ الْأَزْدِ فِرُّوا

Abdullah Bin Al-Zubeyr came out to him and Al-Ashtar stabbed him and repelled him, and sat upon his chest in order to kill him. Abdullah shouted, ‘Kill me and Malik, and kill Malik with me!’ They aimed for him from every side, so he let him go and rode his horse. When they saw him riding, they dispersed from him, and a man from Al-Azd was severe upon Muhammad Bin Al-Hanafiyya and he was saying, ‘O community of Al-Azd! Repeat!’ Ibn Al-Hanafiyya struck him and cut off his hand. He said, ‘O community of Al-Azd! Flee!’

فَخَرَجَ الْأَسْوَدُ بْنُ الْبَخْتَرِيِّ السُّلَمِيُّ قَائِلًا

ارْحَمْ إِلَهِي الْكَلَّ مِنْ سُلَيْمٍ- وَ انْظُرْ إِلَيْهِ نَظْرَةَ الرَّحِيمِ-

Al-Aswad Bin Al-Bakhtari Al-Sulamy came out saying, ‘Have Mercy my God, the fatigue of Suleym, and Look at him with a Merciful Look (Consideration)’.

فَقَتَلَهُ عَمْرُو بْنُ الْحَمِقِ فَخَرَجَ جَابِرٌ الْأَزْدِيُّ قَائِلًا

يَا لَيْتَ أَهْلِي مِنْ عَمَّارٍ حَاضِرِي- مِنْ سَادَةِ الْأَزْدِ وَ كَانُوا نَاصِرِي-

Amro Bin Al-Hamiq killed him. Jabir Al-Azdy came out saying, ‘Alas! If only my family from Ammar would have been present from the chiefs of Al-Azd, and they were my helpers’.

فَقَتَلَهُ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَبِي بَكْرٍ وَ خَرَجَ عَوْفٌ الْقَيْنِيُّ قَائِلًا

يَا أُمِّ يَا أُمِّ خَلَا مِنِّي الْوَطَنُ- لَا أَبْتَغِي الْقَبْرَ وَ لَا أَبْغِي الْكَفَنَ-

Muhammad Bin Abu Bakr killed him. And Awf Al-Qayni came out saying, ‘O mother! O mother! The homeland is vacated from me. Neither do I seek the grave nor do I seek the shroud’.

فَقَتَلَهُ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْحَنَفِيَّةِ فَخَرَجَ بِشْرٌ الضَّبِّيُّ قَائِلًا

ضَبَّةُ أَبْدِي لِلْعِرَاقِ عَمْعَمَةً وَ أَضْرِمِي الْحَرْبَ الْعَوَانَ الْمُضْرِمَةَ-

Muhammad Bin Al-Hanafiyya killed him. Bishr Al-Zaby came out saying, ‘Zaby Abdy the Iraqi is a pillar, and the war is ablaze, and the supporters are ablaze!

فَقَتَلَهُ عَمَّارٌ وَ كَانَتْ عَائِشَةُ تُنَادِي بِأَرْفَعِ صَوْتٍ أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ عَلَيْكُمْ بِالصَّبْرِ فَإِنَّمَا يَصْبِرُ الْأَحْرَارُ فَأَجَابَهَا كُوفِيٌ‏

يَا أُمِّ يَا أُمِّ عُقِقْتِ فَاعْلَمُوا- وَ الْأُمُّ تَغْذُو وُلْدَهَا وَ تَرْحَمُ-
أَ مَا تَرَى كَمْ مِنْ شُجَاعٍ يُكْلَمُ- وَ تَجْتَلِي هَامَتُهُ وَ الْمِعْصَمُ-

Ammar killed him, and Ayesha was calling out at the top of her voice, ‘O you people! Upon you is the combat. Rather the free ones will combat’. Kowfy answered her, ‘O mother! O mother! You disobeyed, so know. And the mother should feed her children and have mercy. Do you not see how many braves have spoken and his wrists and hands are clear?

وَ قَالَ آخَرُ

قُلْتُ لَهَا وَ هِيَ عَلَى مَهْوَاتٍ- إِنَّ لَنَا سِوَاكَ أُمَّهَاتٍ‏
فِي مَسْجِدِ الرَّسُولِ ثَاوِيَاتٍ‏

And another one said, ‘I said to her and she was upon her jokes, ‘For us there are mothers besides you in Masjid of the Rasool-saww’.

فَقَالَ الْحَجَّاجُ بْنُ عُمَرَ الْأَنْصَارِيُ‏

يَا مَعْشَرَ الْأَنْصَارِ قَدْ جَاءَ الْأَجَلُ- إِنِّي أَرَى الْمَوْتَ عِيَاناً قَدْ نَزَلَ-
فَبَادِرُوهُ نَحْوَ أَصْحَابِ الْجَمَلِ- مَا كَانَ فِي الْأَنْصَارِ جُبْنٌ وَ فَشَلٌ-
فَكُلُّ شَيْ‏ءٍ مَا خَلَا اللَّهَ جَلَلٌ-

Al-Hajjaj Bin Umar Al-Ansari said, ‘O community of Helpers! The term has come. I see the death with my eyes to have befallen, so turn around the owner of the camel. There wasn’t among the Helpers any cowardice and sluggishness, so all things what Allah-azwj has Created is important’.

وَ قَالَ خُزَيْمَةُ بْنُ ثَابِتٍ‏

لَمْ يَغْضَبُوا لِلَّهِ إِلَّا لِلْجَمَلِ- وَ الْمَوْتُ خَيْرٌ مِنْ مُقَامٍ فِي خَمَلٍ‏
وَ الْمَوْتُ أَحْرَى مِنْ فِرَارٍ وَ فَشَلٍ- وَ الْقَوْلُ لَا يَنْفَعُ إِلَّا بِالْعَمَلِ‏

And Khuzeyman Bin Sabit said, ‘They did not get angry for Allah-azwj, only for the camel, and the death is better standing in laziness, and the death is freer than fleeing and sluggishness, and the word will not benefit except with the action’.

وَ قَالَ شُرَيْحُ بْنُ هَانِئٍ-

لَا عَيْشَ إِلَّا ضَرْبُ أَصْحَابِ الْجَمَلِ- مَا إِنْ لَنَا بَعْدَ عَلِيٍّ مِنْ بَدَلٍ-

And Shurayh Bin Hany said, ‘There is no life except striking the companions of the camel. There is nothing for us after Ali-asws, any replacement’.

وَ قَالَ هَانِئُ بْنُ عُرْوَةَ الْمَذْحِجِيُ‏

يَا لَكَ حَرْباً جَثَّهَا جِمَالُهَا- قَائِدَةً يَنْقُصُهَا ضَلَالُهَا
هَذَا عَلِيٌّ حَوْلَهُ أَقْيَالُهَا

And Hany Bin Urwah Al-Mazhaji said, ‘Oh for you is a war whose corpses are its camels, a female guide being deficient in straying it. This is Ali-asws surrounding her words’.

وَ قَالَ سَعِيدُ بْنُ قَيْسٍ الْهَمْدَانِيُ‏

قُلْ لِلْوَصِيِّ اجْتَمَعَتْ قَحْطَانُهَا- إِنْ يَكُ حَرْبٌ أَضْرَمَتْ نِيرَانُهَا-

And Saeed Bin Qays Al-Hamdany said, ‘Say to the successor-asws, their sterile ones have gathered, if a war occurs, inflame its flames’.

وَ قَالَ عَمَّارٌ

إِنِّي لَعَمَّارٌ وَ شَيْخِي يَاسِرٌ- صَاحٍ كِلَانَا مُؤْمِنٌ مُهَاجِرٌ
طَلْحَةُ فِيهَا وَ الزُّبَيْرُ غَادِرٌ- وَ الْحَقُّ فِي كَفِّ عَلِيٍّ ظَاهِرٌ-

And Ammar said, ‘I am Ammar and my old man is Yasser. Each one of us is a Momin, and Emigrant. Talha was in it and Al-Zubeyr betrayed, and the truth in the wrist of Ali-asws is apparent’.

وَ قَالَ الْأَشْتَرُ

هَذَا عَلِيٌّ فِي الدُّجَى مِصْبَاحٌ- نَحْنُ بِذَا فِي فَضْلِهِ فِصَاحٌ-

And Al-Ashtar said, ‘This is Ali-asws, a lamp in the darkness. We are with that eloquence regarding his-asws merits’’.

وَ قَالَ عَدِيُّ بْنُ حَاتِمٍ‏

أَنَا عَدِيٌّ وَ نَمَانِي حَاتِمٌ- هَذَا عَلِيٌّ بِالْكِتَابِ عَالِمٌ‏
لَمْ يَعْصِهِ فِي النَّاسِ إِلَّا ظَالِمٌ-

And Aday Bin Hatim said, ‘I am Aday and my surname is Hatim. This is Ali-asws, with the Book he-asws is knowledgeable. No one among the people would disobey him-asws except an unjust one’’.

وَ قَالَ عَمْرُو بْنُ الْحَمِقِ‏

هَذَا عَلِيٌّ قَائِدٌ يُرْضَى بِهِ- أَخُو رَسُولِ اللَّهِ فِي أَصْحَابِهِ‏
مِنْ عُودِهِ النَّامِي وَ مِنْ نِصَابِهِ-

And Amro Bin Al-Hamiq said, ‘This is Ali-asws, guide being pleased with, brother-asws of Rasool-Allah-saww among his-saww companions. From his-asws return is the development, and from his-asws share’.

وَ قَالَ رِفَاعَةُ بْنُ شَدَّادٍ الْبَجَلِيُ‏

إِنَّ الَّذِينَ قَطَعُوا الْوَسِيلَةَ- وَ نَازَعُوا عَلَى عَلِيٍّ الْفَضِيلَةَ
فِي حَرْبِهِ كَالنَّعْجَةِ الْأَكِيلَةِ-

And Rifa’at Bin Shaddad Al-Bajali said, ‘Surely the ones who cut off the means, and they snatched away they disputed upon Ali-asws the merits in his-asws war like the fattened sheep’.

وَ شَكَّتِ السِّهَامُ الْهَوْدَجَ حَتَّى كَأَنَّهُ جَنَاحُ نَسْرٍ أَوْ شَوْكُ قُنْفُذٍ فَقَالَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ع مَا أَرَاهُ يُقَاتِلُكُمْ غَيْرُ هَذَا الْهَوْدَجِ اعْقِرُوا الْجَمَلَ

And the arrows had ripped the carriage (of Ayesha) to the extent that it was like the wing of an eagle or thorns of a hedgehog. Amir Al-Momineen-asws said: ‘I-asws do not see your fighting apart from this carriage. Slay the camel!’

وَ فِي رِوَايَةٍ أُخْرَى عَرْقِبُوهُ فَإِنَّهُ شَيْطَانٌ وَ قَالَ لِمُحَمَّدِ بْنِ أَبِي بَكْرٍ انْظُرْ إِذَا عُرْقِبَ الْجَمَلُ فَأَدْرِكْ أُخْتَكَ فَوَارِهَا فَعُرْقِبَ رِجْلٌ مِنْهُ فَدَخَلَ تَحْتَهُ رَجُلٌ ضَبِّيٌّ ثُمَّ عَرْقَبَ [رِجْل‏] أُخْرَى [مِنْهُ‏] عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ فَوَقَعَ عَلَى جَنْبِهِ فَقَطَعَ عَمَّارٌ نِسْعَهُ

And in another report, ‘Hamstring it, for it is a satan-la!’ And he-asws said to Muhammad Bin Abu Bakr: ‘Look when they hamstring the camel, and go to your sister and cover her’. A man from it hamstrung it, and a man of Zaby entered under it, then the other leg from it was hamstrung by Abdul Rahman, and it fell upon its side. Ammar cut off its pulse.

فَأَتَاهُ عَلِيٌّ وَ دَقَّ رُمْحَهُ عَلَى الْهَوْدَجِ وَ قَالَ يَا عَائِشَةُ أَ هَكَذَا أَمَرَكِ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ع أَنْ تَفْعَلِي فَقَالَتْ يَا أَبَا الْحَسَنِ ظَفِرْتَ فَأَحْسِنْ وَ مَلَكْتَ فَأَسْجِحْ

Ali-asws came to it and knocked his-asws spear upon the carriage and said: ‘O Ayesha! Is this how Rasool-Allah-saww had instructed you to do?’ She said, ‘O Abu Al-Hassan-asws! You-asws have won, so be good, and you-asws have possessed so rejoice!’

فَقَالَ عَلِيٌّ لِمُحَمَّدِ بْنِ أَبِي بَكْرٍ شَأْنَكَ وَ أُخْتَكَ فَلَا يَدْنُو أَحَدٌ مِنْهَا سِوَاكَ

Ali-asws said to Muhammad Bin Abu Bakr: ‘Your concern and your sister, so no one should go near her besides you’.

فَقَالَ مُحَمَّدٌ فَقُلْتُ لَهَا مَا فَعَلْتِ بِنَفْسِكِ عَصَيْتِ رَبَّكِ وَ هَتَكْتِ سِتْرَكِ ثُمَّ أَبَحْتِ حُرْمَتَكِ وَ تَعَرَّضْتِ لِلْقَتْلِ فَذَهَبَ بِهَا إِلَى دَارِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ خَلَفٍ الْخُزَاعِيِّ فَقَالَتْ أَقْسَمْتُ عَلَيْكَ أَنْ تَطْلُبَ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ الزُّبَيْرِ جَرِيحاً كَانَ أَوْ قَتِيلًا فَقَالَ إِنَّهُ كَانَ هَدَفاً لِلْأَشْتَرِ

Muhammad said, ‘I said to her, ‘What have you done with yourself? You have disobeyed your Lord-azwj and violated your veil, then you have revealed your sanctity and exposed (yourself) to be killed’. So, I went with her to a house of Abdullah Bin Khalaf Al-Khuzaie. She said, ‘I vow upon you that you seek Abdullah Bin Al-Zubeyr, whether he was injured or killed’. He said, ‘He was a target of Al-Ashtar’.

فَانْصَرَفَ مُحَمَّدٌ إِلَى الْعَسْكَرِ فَوَجَدَهُ فَقَالَ اجْلِسْ يَا مَيْشُومَ [مَشْئُومَ‏] أَهْلِ بَيْتِهِ فَأَتَاهَا بِهِ فَصَاحَتْ وَ بَكَتْ ثُمَّ قَالَتْ يَا أَخِي اسْتَأْمِنْ لَهُ مِنْ عَلِيٍّ فَأَتَى مُحَمَّدٌ أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ع فَاسْتَأَمَنَ لَهُ مِنْهُ فَقَالَ ع أَمِنْتُهُ وَ أَمِنْتُ جَمِيعَ النَّاسِ

Muhammad left to go to the soldiers and found him. He said, ‘Sit up, O inauspicious one of his family!’ I came to her with him. She shrieked and cried, then said, ‘O my brother! Get him the amnesty from Ali-asws’. Muhammad came to Amir Al-Momineen-asws and sought amnesty for him from him-asws. He-asws said: ‘I-asws grant him amnesty and amnesty for the entirety of the people’.

وَ كَانَتْ وَقْعَةُ الْجَمَلِ بِالْخُرَيْبَةِ وَ وَقَعَ الْقِتَالُ بَعْدَ الظُّهْرِ وَ انْقَضَى عِنْدَ الْمَسَاءِ فَكَانَ مَعَ أَمِيرِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ع عِشْرُونَ أَلْفَ رَجُلٍ مِنْهُمُ الْبَدْرِيُّونَ ثَمَانُونَ رَجُلًا وَ مِمَّنْ بَايَعَ تَحْتَ الشَّجَرَةِ مِائَتَانِ وَ خَمْسُونَ وَ مِنَ الصَّحَابَةِ أَلْفٌ وَ خَمْسُمِائَةِ رَجُلٍ وَ كَانَتْ عَائِشَةُ فِي ثَلَاثِينَ ألف [أَلْفاً] أَوْ يَزِيدُونَ مِنْهَا الْمَكِّيُّونَ سِتُّ مِائَةِ رَجُلٍ

And the event of the camel was at Al-Khureyba, and the fighting occurred after Al-Zohr (midday), and expired in the evening. There were with Amir Al-Momineen-asws, twenty thousand men. From them, eighty men were participants of the battle of Badr, and two hundred and fifty from the ones who had pledged allegiance (to Rasool-Allah-saww) beneath the tree, and one thousand and five hundred men from the companions. And Ayesha was among thirty thousand or more than it. From these there were six hundred men from Makkah.

قَالَ قَتَادَةُ قُتِلَ يَوْمَ الْجَمَلِ عِشْرُونَ أَلْفاً

Qatadah said, ‘On the day of the camel, twenty thousand were killed’.

وَ قَالَ الْكَلْبِيُّ قُتِلَ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ عَلِيٍّ ع أَلْفُ رَاجِلٍ وَ سَبْعُونَ فَارِساً مِنْهُمْ زَيْدُ بْنُ صُوحَانَ وَ هِنْدٌ الْجَمَلِيُّ وَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الْعَبْدِيُّ وَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ رُقَيَّةَ

And Al-Kaby said, ‘From the companions of Ali-asws a thousand men were killed, and seventy horsemen, from them being Zayd Bin Sowhan, and Hind Al-Jamali, and Abu Abdullah Al-Abdy, and Abdullah Bin Ruqayya’.

وَ قَالَ أَبُو مِخْنَفٍ وَ الْكَلْبِيُّ قُتِلَ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ الْجَمَلِ مِنَ الْأَزْدِ خَاصَّةً أَرْبَعَةُ آلَافِ رَجُلٍ وَ مِنْ بَنِي عَدِيٍّ وَ مَوَالِيهِمْ تِسْعُونَ رَجُلًا وَ مِنْ بَنِي بَكْرِ بْنِ وَائِلٍ ثَمَانُمِائَةِ رَجُلٍ وَ مِنْ بَنِي حَنْظَلَةَ تِسْعُمِائَةِ رَجُلٍ وَ مِنْ بَنِي نَاجِيَةَ أَرْبَعُمِائَةِ رَجُلٍ

And Abu Mikhnaf and Al-Kalby said, ‘There were killed from the companions of the camel, from Al-Azd in particular, four thousand men, and from the clan of Adayy and their slaves, ninety men, and from Bakr Bin Wail, eighty men, and from the clan of Hanzala, nine hundred men, and from the clan of Najiya, four hundred men.

وَ الْبَاقِي مِنْ أَخْلَاطِ النَّاسِ إِلَى تَمَامِ تِسْعَةِ آلَافٍ إِلَّا تِسْعِينَ رَجُلًا الْقُرَشِيُّونَ مِنْهُمْ طَلْحَةُ وَ الزُّبَيْرُ وَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عَتَّابِ بْنِ أَسِيدٍ وَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ حَكِيمِ بْنِ حِزَامٍ وَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ شَافِعِ بْنِ طَلْحَةَ وَ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ طَلْحَةَ وَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ أُبَيِّ بْنِ خَلَفٍ الْجُمَحِيُّ وَ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ مَعَدٍّ وَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مَعَدٍّ

And the rest were from a mixture of the people up to the complete nine thousands, except ninety men of Quraysh, from them being Talha, and Al-Zubeyr, and Abdullah Bin Attab Bin Aseyd, and Abdullah Bin Hakeem Bin Hizam, and Abdullah Bin Shafie Bin Talha, and Muhammad Bin Talha, and Abdullah Bin Ubay Bin Khalaf Al Jumhy, and Abdul Rahman Bin Ma’ady, and Abdullah Bin Ma’ady.

وَ عَرْقَبَ الْجَمَلَ أَوَّلًا أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَ يُقَالُ الْمُسْلِمُ بْنُ عَدْنَانَ وَ يُقَالُ رَجُلٌ مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ وَ يُقَالُ رَجُلٌ ذُهْلِيٌّ وَ قِيلَ لِعَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ صُرَدَ التَّنُوخِيِّ لِمَ عَرْقَبْتَ الْجَمَلَ

And the camel was first hamstrung by Amir Al Momineen-asws, and it is said, Al Muslim Bin Adnan, and it is said, a man from the Helpers, and it is said, a man from Zuhly, and it is said of Abdul Rahman Bin Surad Al Tanoukhy gathered the hamstrung camel.

فَقَالَ‏

عَقَرْتُ وَ لَمْ أَعْقِرْ بِهَا لِهَوَانِهَا- عَلَيَّ وَ لَكِنِّي رَأَيْتُ الْمَهَالِكَا

He said (a couplet), ‘I hamstrung and did not hamstrung it for its sake upon me, but I had seen its destruction’.

إِلَى قَوْلِهِ‏

فَيَا لَيْتَنِي عَرْقَبْتُهُ قَبْلَ ذَلِكَا

Up to his words, ‘Alas! If only I had hamstrung it before that’.

وَ قَالَ عُثْمَانُ بْنُ حُنَيْفٍ‏

شَهِدْتُ الْحُرُوبَ فَشَيَّبْنَنِي- فَلَمْ أَرَ يَوْماً كَيَوْمِ الْجَمَلِ‏
أَشَدَّ عَلَى مُؤْمِنٍ فِتْنَةً- وَ أَقْتَلَ مِنْهُمْ لِحَرْقٌ بَطَلٌ‏
فَلَيْتَ الظَّعِينَةَ فِي بَيْتِهَا- وَ يَا لَيْتَ عَسْكَرٌ لَمْ يَرْتَحِلْ‏

Usman Bin Huneyf said, ‘I have attended the wars and they have shown me, but I never saw a day like the day of the camel. Fitna was intense upon the Momin, and there were killed from them to burn the heroes. Alas! If only the woman (Ayesha) had stayed in her house, and alas, if only (the camel) ‘Asker’ had not departed’’.[22]

133- شي، تفسير العياشي عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع قَالَ سَمِعْتُهُ يَقُولُ‏ دَخَلَ عَلَيَّ أُنَاسٌ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْبَصْرَةِ فَسَأَلُونِي عَنْ طَلْحَةَ وَ الزُّبَيْرِ فَقُلْتُ لَهُمْ كَانَا إِمَامَيْنِ مِنْ أَئِمَّةِ الْكُفْرِ إِنَّ عَلِيّاً يَوْمَ الْبَصْرَةِ لَمَّا صَفَّ الْخُيُولَ قَالَ لِأَصْحَابِهِ لَا تَعْجَلُوا عَلَى الْقَوْمِ حَتَّى أُعْذَرَ فِيمَا بَيْنِي وَ بَيْنَ اللَّهِ وَ بَيْنَهُمْ

Tafseer Al Ayyashi –

From Abu Abdullah-asws, he (the narrator) said, ‘I heard him-asws saying: ‘Some people from the people of Al-Basra entered to see me-asws and they asked me-asws about Talha and Al-Zubeyr. I-asws said to them: ‘They were two imams from the imams of Al Kufr. On the day of Al-Basra, when Ali-asws formed rows of the cavalry, said to his-asws companions: ‘Do not be hasty upon the people until I-asws give them excuse in what is between me-asws and Allah-azwj and them’.

فَقَامَ إِلَيْهِمْ فَقَالَ يَا أَهْلَ الْبَصْرَةِ هَلْ تَجِدُونَ عَلَيَّ جَوْراً فِي حُكْمٍ قَالُوا لَا قَالَ فَحَيْفاً فِي قَسْمٍ قَالُوا لَا قَالَ فَرَغْبَةٌ فِي دُنْيَا أَصَبْتُهَا لِي وَ لِأَهْلِ بَيْتِي دُونَكُمْ فَنَقَمْتُمْ عَلَيَّ فَنَكَثْتُمْ عَلَيَّ بَيْعَتِي قَالُوا لَا

He-asws stood among them and said: ‘O people of Al-Basra! Are you finding Ali-asws as a tyrant in the decisions?’ They said, ‘No’. He-asws said: ‘Unfair in the distribution?’ They said, ‘No’. He-asws said: ‘Is it a desire regarding the world I-asws have attained for me-asws and for my-asws family besides you all, so you are taking revenge upon me-asws and breaking my-asws allegiance upon me-asws?’ They said, ‘No’.

قَالَ فَأَقَمْتُ فِيكُمُ الْحُدُودَ وَ عَطَّلْتُهَا عَنْ غَيْرِكُمْ قَالُوا لَا قَالَ فَمَا بَالُ بَيْعَتِي تُنْكَثُ وَ بَيْعَةُ غَيْرِي لَا تُنْكَثُ إِنِّي ضَرَبْتُ الْأَمْرَ أَنْفَهُ وَ عَيْنَيْهِ وَ لَمْ أَجِدْ إِلَّا الْكُفْرَ أَوِ السَّيْفَ

He-asws said: ‘Have I-asws established the legal penalties among you all and have suspended these from others?’ They said, ‘No’. He-asws said: ‘So what is the matter you are breaking my-asws allegiance and did not break the allegiances of others? I-asws struck the matter, its nose and its eyes, and did not find except the Kufr or the sword!’

ثُمَّ ثَنَى إِلَى أَصْحَابِهِ فَقَالَ إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَقُولُ فِي كِتَابِهِ‏ وَ إِنْ نَكَثُوا أَيْمانَهُمْ مِنْ بَعْدِ عَهْدِهِمْ وَ طَعَنُوا فِي دِينِكُمْ فَقاتِلُوا أَئِمَّةَ الْكُفْرِ إِنَّهُمْ لا أَيْمانَ لَهُمْ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَنْتَهُونَ‏

Then he-asws praised his-asws companions. He-asws said: ‘Allah-azwj is Saying in His-azwj Book: And if they break their oaths after their agreement and are taunting regarding your Religion, then fight the imams of Kufr – surely their oaths (mean) nothing, perhaps they would desist [9:12]’.

فَقَالَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَ الَّذِي فَلَقَ الْحَبَّةَ وَ بَرَأَ النَّسَمَةَ وَ اصْطَفَى مُحَمَّداً بِالنُّبُوَّةِ إِنَّهُمْ لَأَصْحَابُ هَذِهِ الْآيَةِ وَ مَا قُوتِلُوا مُنْذُ نَزَلَتْ.

Amir Al-Momineen-asws said: ‘By the One-azwj Who Split the seed and Formed the person, and Chose Muhammad-saww with the Prophet-hood! They are the companions of this Verse, and they (imams of Kufr) have not been fought against since it was Revealed’’.[23]
