CHAPTER 109
(The Disbelievers)
(6 VERSES)
VERSES 1 – 6
Brief Introduction of 109:
Sura Al-Kafiroun (6 verses) was revealed in Makkah.[1] It was revealed when a number of Quraysh objected to the Rasool-saww and they said, ‘O Muhammad-saww! Come, let us worship what you-saww worship, and you-saww worship what we worship, so we and you-saww can participate in the matter. Supposing that we are upon is the truth, you-saww would be taking your-saww share from it, and if that which you-saww are upon is the truth, we would have taken our share from it! Allah-azwj Revealed: Say: ‘O you Kafirs!’ [109:1] I do not worship what you are worshipping [109:2] Nor are you worshipping what I worship [109:3] – up to the end of the Chapter.’’[2]

And from Khawaas Al-Quran, who has said:
‘It has been reported from the Prophet-saww having said: ‘One who recites this Surah (Al-Kafiroun), Allah-azwj Grants him the Rewards as if he has recited a quarter of the Holy Quran, and Distances him from the harm of the Satan-la, and will Save him from the horrors on the Day of Judgment.

Remedy for forgetfulness in Salat (pairing of Al-Tawhhed and Al-Kafiroun)
In Man La Yahzur Al-Faqih – And it has been reported from Amro Bin Yazeed who said:
‘I complained to Abu Abdullah-asws of the forgetfulness in Al-Maghrib (Salat). So he-asws said: ‘Pray it with: Say: ‘He, Allah, is One [112:1] (Surah Al Tawheed), and: Say: ‘O you Kafirs!’ [109:1] (Surah Al-Kafiroun)’. So I did, (and) it (forgetfulness) went away from me’.[9]
Recommendation for the recitation in the Salat of Tawaaf
Ali Bin Ibrahim, from his father, from Ibn Abu Umeyr, from Jameel Bin Darraj, from one of our companions who said,
‘One of the two (5th or 6th Imam-asws) said: ’The man should pray the two Cycles of the Tawaaf Salat, the Obligatory Tawaaf and the optional one, with: Say: ‘He, Allah, is One [112:1] (Surah Al-Tawheed), and: Say: ‘O you Kafirs!’ [109:1] (Surah Al-Kafiroun)’’.[10]
Ali Bin Ibrahim, from his father, from Ibn Abu Umeyr, and Muhammad Bin Ismail, from Al Fazl Bin Shazaan, from Safwan Bin Yahya and Ibn Abu Umeyr, from Muawiya Bin Ammar who said,
‘Abu Abdullah-asws said: ‘Whenever you are free from your Tawaaf, so go to the Standing Place of Ibrahim-as, and pray two Cycles Salat, and Make it to be in front of you, and recite during the first of these, Surah Al-Tawheed: Say: ‘He, Allah, is One [112:1], and during the second (Cycle): Say: ‘O you Kafirs!’ [109:1] (Surah Al-Kafiroun). Then testify and Praise Allah-azwj and Extoll upon Him-azwj, and Send Salawat upon the Prophet-saww, and ask Him-asws that He-azwj should Accept from you.
And, these two Cycles (of Salat) are the Obligatory ones, and it is not disliked for you if you were to pray these two during whichever times you so desire during the decline of the sun, and during its setting; and do not delay these two for a while after you have performed Tawaaf, and you are free, so pray these two’.[11]
For getting supplications Answered
Muhammad Bin Yahya, from Ahmad Bin Muhammad, from Ali Bin Hadeed, from Murazam who said,
‘Abu Abdullah-asws said to me: ‘Whenever one of you intends something, so let him pray two Rak’at of Salāt, then let him Praise Allah-azwj and let him Laud upon Him-azwj, and let him send Blessings upon Muhammad-saww and the People-asws of his-saww Household, and he should be saying, ‘O Allah-azwj! If this matter was good for me in my Religion, and my world, so Make it easier for me; and if it was other than that, so Exchange it from me’.
So I asked him-asws, ‘Which thing should I recite in these two?’ So he-asws said: ‘Recite in these two whatever you so desire to, and if you so desire to, recite in these two Say: ‘He, Allah, is One [112:1] (Surah Al Tawheed), and: Say: ‘O you Kafirs!’ [109:1] (Surah Al-Kafiroun)’.[12]
Recitation when supplication is Answered
Muhammad Bin Yahya, from Ahmad Bin Muhammad, from Muhammad Bin Ismail, from Abu Ismail Al-Sarraj, from Haroun Bin Kharijat,
(It has been narrated) from Abu Abdullah-asws having said regarding the Salāt of gratefulness: ‘Whenever Allah-azwj Favours upon you with a Bounty, then pray two Cycles of Salāt, reciting in the first with the Opening of the Book (Surah Al Hamd) and: Say: ‘He, Allah, is One [112:1] (Surah Al Tawheed); and recite in the second with the Opening of the Book (Chapter 1) and: Say: ‘O you Kafirs!’ [109:1] (Surah Al-Kafiroun); and you should be saying in the first Cycle during your Rukū and your Sajdah,
‘The Praise for Allah-azwj. Thanks! Thanks and Praise!’ And you should be saying in the second Cycle during your Rukū and your Sajdah, ‘The Praise is for Allah-azwj Who Answered my supplication and Gave me what I asked for’’.[13]
Provisions for a journey
And from Jubeyr Bin Mat’am who said, ‘Rasool Allah-saww said to me: ‘O Jubeyr! Would you like to go out on a journey and to be the best among your companions, and be with the most provision?’ I said, ‘Yes, may my father and my mother be sacrificed for you-saww, O Rasool Allah-saww!’
He-saww said: ‘So read these five Chapters: Say: ‘O you Kafirs!’ [109:1] (Surah Al-Kafiroun), and: When Help of Allah comes and the victory [110:1] (Surah Al Nasr), and: Say: ‘He, Allah, is One [112:1] (Surah Al Tawheed), and: Say: ‘I seek Refuge with Lord of Al-Falaq [113:1] (Surah Al Falaq), and: Say: ‘I seek Refuge with Lord of the people [114:1] (Surah Al Naas), and begin your recitation with ‘In the Name of Allah-azwj, the Beneficent, the Merciful’’.
Jubeyr said, ‘I was a man with not much wealth, and I had gone out with the ones who Allah-azwj so Desire me to go out with (on a journey). But, I became of more endeavor than them even though I had fewer provisions, until I returned from that journey of mine’.[14]
VERSES 1 – 6
قُلْ يَا أَيُّهَا الْكَافِرُونَ {1}
Say: ‘O you Kafirs!’ [109:1]
لَا أَعْبُدُ مَا تَعْبُدُونَ {2}
I do not worship what you are worshipping [109:2]
وَلَا أَنْتُمْ عَابِدُونَ مَا أَعْبُدُ {3}
Nor are you worshipping what I worship [109:3]
وَلَا أَنَا عَابِدٌ مَا عَبَدْتُمْ {4}
Nor will I be worshipping what you are worshiping [109:4]
وَلَا أَنْتُمْ عَابِدُونَ مَا أَعْبُدُ {5}
Nor will you be worshipping what I worship [109:5]
لَكُمْ دِينُكُمْ وَلِيَ دِينِ {6}
For you is your religion and for me is my Religion [109:6]
Ali Bin Ibrahim (Tafseer Qummi), from his father, from Muhammad Bin Abu Umeyr who said,
‘Abu Shakir asked Abu Ja’far Al-Ahowl about the Words of Allah-azwj Mighty and Majestic: Say: ‘O you Kafirs!’ [109:1] I do not worship what you are worshipping [109:2] Nor are you worshipping what I worship [109:3] Nor will I be worshipping what you are worship [109:4] Nor will you be worshipping what I worship [109:5], does the Wise Speak in such a manner and repeats it again and again?’ But there was no answer with Abu Ja’far Al-Ahowl with regards to that.
So He entered Al-Medina, and asked Abu Abdullah-asws about that, and he-asws said: ‘There was a reason for its Revelation and its repetition. Quraysh had said to the Rasool-Allah-saww, ‘You-saww worship our gods for a year, and we would worship your-saww God for a year, but then you-saww should worship our gods for a year, and we would worship your-saww God for a year.
Therefore, Allah-azwj Answered them similarly to what they had said. So He-azwj Said regarding what they had said, ‘You-saww should worship our gods for a year’ – regarding what they said, ‘You-saww worship our gods for a year, He-azwj Said: Say: ‘O you Kafirs!’ [109:1] I do not worship what you are worshipping.
And regarding what they said, ‘We would worship your-saww God for a year’, He-azwj Said: Nor are you worshipping what I worship [109:3].
And regarding what they said, ‘(Then) you-saww should worship our gods for a year’, He-azwj Said: Nor will I be worshipping what you are worship [109:4].
And regarding what they said, ‘We would worship your-saww God for a year’, He-azwj Said: Nor will you be worshipping what I worship [109:5] For you is your religion and for me is my Religion [109:6].
He (the narrator) said, ‘Abu Ja’far Al-Ahowl returned to Abu Shakir and informed him of that. Abu Shakir said, ‘This is what is borne upon the camels from Al-Hijaz’.
And Abu Abdullah-asws used to say, when he-asws was free from reciting (Surah Kafiroun) it: ‘My-asws Religion is Al-Islam’ – three times’. [15]
In (the book) Amaali of Sheykh Al Ta’ifa, by his chain up to Saeed Bin Mayna, from someone else from his companions,
‘A number of Quraysh objected to Rasool-Allah-saww. (They were) – Utba Bin Rabi’a, and Umayya Bin Khalaf, and Al-Waleed Bin Al-Mugheira, and Al-Aas Bin Al-Saeed, and they said, ‘O Muhammad-saww! Come, we shall worship what you-saww worship, and you-saww should worship what we worship. Then we would be participants, us and you-saww, in the matter.
Then if it so happens that what we are upon is the truth, then you-saww would have taken your-saww share from it, and if it so happens that what you-saww are upon is the truth, then we would have taken our share from it’.
Allah-azwj Blessed and Exalted Revealed: Say: ‘O you Kafirs!’ [109:1] I do not worship what you are worshipping [109:2] Nor are you worshipping what I worship [109:3] – up to the end of the Chapter’’.[16]
In (the book) Qurb Al Asnad –
‘By his chain going up to Abu Abdullah-asws regarding: Say: ‘O you Kafirs!’ [109:1] I do not worship what you are worshipping [109:2] (said): ‘I-asws worship my-asws Lord-azwj, and for me-asws is my-asws Religion. My-asws Religion is Al-Islam. Upon it I-asws live, and upon it I-asws shall be passing away, if Allah-azwj so Desires’’.[17]
