A name of Iblis, Satan as per general Muslims[1]
A general Muslim term ‘Azazil’ for Iblis, where they think that Iblis used to be an angel, which is wrong – it is neither in the Holy Quran nor in the Ahadith. Instead, Iblis used to be a Jinn, living on earth and worshipping Allah-azwj and when Allah-azwj destroyed all Jinns who were making mischief on the earth, He-azwj spared Iblis and lifted him to the Heavens and let him reside with the angels.

قَالا: قُلْنَا لَهُ ع: فَعَلَى هَذَا لَمْ يَكُنْ إِبْلِيسُ أَيْضاً مَلَكاً فَقَالَ: لَا، بَلْ كَانَ مِنَ الْجِنِّ، أَ مَا تَسْمَعَانِ أَنَّ اللَّهَ تَعَالَى يَقُولُ: وَ إِذْ قُلْنا لِلْمَلائِكَةِ اسْجُدُوا لِآدَمَ فَسَجَدُوا إِلَّا إِبْلِيسَ كانَ مِنَ الْجِنِ. فَأَخْبَرَ أَنَّهُ كَانَ مِنَ الْجِنِّ، وَ هُوَ الَّذِي قَالَ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى: وَ الْجَانَّ خَلَقْناهُ مِنْ قَبْلُ مِنْ نارِ السَّمُومِ
They both (Abu Yaqoub and Abu Al-Hassan – the two reporters of this Tafseer) said, ‘We said to him-asws (Imam Hassan Askari the 11th Imam-asws), ‘Then upon this, Iblees-la cannot happen to be from the Angels as well’. So he-asws said: ‘No, but he-la was from the Jinn. Have you two not heard Allah-azwj the Exalted Saying: And when We Said to the Angels: Do Sajda to Adam, so they did Sajda except for Iblees. He was from the Jinn [18:50]? Thus, He-azwj Informed that he-la was from the Jinn, and he-la is for whom Allah-azwj the Exalted Said: And the Jinn We Created before from toxic fumes [15:27]’.[2]
