Compulsory obligation in religion
وَ وَجَدْتُ أَيْضاً فِي كِتَابِ سُلَيْمٍ، فِي مَوْضِعٍ آخَرَ قَالَ أَبَانُ بْنُ أَبِي عَيَّاشٍ قَالَ لِي أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ ع مَا لَقِينَا أَهْلَ الْبَيْتِ مِنْ ظُلْمِ قُرَيْشٍ وَ تَظَاهُرِهِمْ عَلَيْنَا وَ قَتْلِهِمْ إِيَّانَا وَ مَا لَقِيَتْ شِيعَتُنَا وَ مُحِبُّونَا مِنَ النَّاسِ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ص قُبِضَ وَ قَدْ قَامَ بِحَقِّنَا وَ أَمَرَ بِطَاعَتِنَا وَ فَرَضَ وَلَايَتَنَا وَ مَوَدَّتَنَا وَ أَخْبَرَهُمْ بِأَنَّا أَوْلَى بِهِمْ مِنْ أَنْفُسِهِمْ وَ أَمَرَ أَنْ يُبَلِّغَ الشَّاهِدُ الْغَائِبَ
And I (Majlisi) found as well in the book of Suleym, in another place – Aban Bin Abu Ayyash said,
Abu Ja’far-asws said to me: ‘What is faced by us-asws, People-asws of the Household, from the oppression of Quraysh, their backing each other against us-asws, and their killing us-asws, and what is faced by our-asws Shias and ones who love us-asws, from the people, is because Rasool-Allah-saww passed away and he-saww had stood with our-asws rights, and ‘فَرَضَ’ ordered with obedience to us-asws, and Obligated our-asws Wilayah, and our-asws cordiality, and informed them what we-asws are foremost with them than their ownselves, and ordered that the one presented deliver it to the absentee.
فَتَظَاهَرُوا عَلَى عَلِيٍّ ع فَاحْتَجَّ عَلَيْهِمْ بِمَا قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص فِيهِ وَ مَا سَمِعْتِ الْعَامَّةُ فَقَالُوا صَدَقْتَ قَدْ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص وَ لَكِنْ قَدْ نَسَخَهُ فَقَالَ إِنَّا أَهْلُ بَيْتٍ أَكْرَمَنَا اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ وَ اصْطَفَانَا وَ لَمْ يَرْضَ لَنَا بِالدُّنْيَا وَ إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَا يَجْمَعُ لَنَا النُّبُوَّةَ وَ الْخِلَافَةَ
‘But they backed each other against Ali-asws. He-asws argued against them with what Rasool-Allah-saww had said regarding him-asws, and what the general public had heard. They said, ‘You-asws speak the truth, Rasool-Allah-saww had said it, but abrogated it. (They alleged that) He-saww said: ‘We-asws, People-asws of the Household, Allah-azwj Mighty and Majestic Honoured us-asws, and Chose us-asws, and was not Pleased for the world being for us-asws, and that Allah-azwj will not Gatherer for us-asws, the Prophet-hood and the caliphate’.
فَشَهِدَ لَهُ بِذَلِكَ أَرْبَعَةُ نَفَرٍ عُمَرُ وَ أَبُو عُبَيْدَةَ وَ مُعَاذُ بْنُ جَبَلٍ وَ سَالِمٌ مَوْلَى أَبِي حُذَيْفَةَ فَشَبَّهُوا عَلَى الْعَامَّةِ وَ صَدَّقُوهُمْ وَ رَدُّوهُمْ عَلَى أَدْبَارِهِمْ وَ أَخْرَجُوهَا مِنْ مَعْدِنِهَا حَيْثُ جَعَلَهَا اللَّهُ وَ احْتَجُّوا عَلَى الْأَنْصَارِ بِحَقِّنَا فَعَقَدُوهَا لِأَبِي بَكْرٍ
‘Forty persons testified with that for him (Abu Bakr), and (so did) Abu Ubeyda, and Muaz Bin Jabal, and Saalim Mawla Abu Huzeyfa. They confused upon the general public, and they ratified them, and they returned them upon their backs, and they took it out from its mine when Allah-azwj had Made it to be, and they argued against the Helpers with our-asws right, and they tied it to Abu Bakr.
ثُمَّ رَدَّهَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ إِلَى عُمَرَ يُكَافِيهِ بِهَا ثُمَّ جَعَلَهَا عُمَرُ شُورَى بَيْنَ سِتَّةٍ ثُمَّ جَعَلَهَا ابْنُ عَوْفٍ لِعُثْمَانَ عَلَى أَنْ يَرُدَّهَا عَلَيْهِ فَغَدَرَ بِهِ عُثْمَانُ وَ أَظْهَرَ ابْنُ عَوْفٍ كُفْرَهُ وَ جَهْلَهُ وَ طُعِنَ فِي حَيَاتِهِ وَ زَعَمَ أَنَّ عُثْمَانَ سَمَّهُ فَمَاتَ
‘Then Abu Bakr returned it to Umar sufficing him (of his support) with it. Then Umar made it to be a consultation between six. Then Ibn Awf made it to be for Usman upon (a condition) that he would return it to him. But, Usman was treacherous with him, and Ibn Awf manifested his Kufr, and his ignorance, and accused him during his lifetime and claimed that Usman had poisoned him, Then he died.
ثُمَّ قَامَ طَلْحَةُ وَ الزُّبَيْرُ فَبَايَعَا عَلِيّاً ع طَائِعَيْنِ غَيْرَ مُكْرَهَيْنِ ثُمَّ نَكَثَا وَ غَدَرَا وَ ذَهَبَا بِعَائِشَةَ مَعَهُمَا إِلَى الْبَصْرَةِ ثُمَّ دَعَا مُعَاوِيَةُ طُغَاةَ أَهْلِ الشَّامِ إِلَى الطَّلَبِ بِدَمِ عُثْمَانَ وَ نَصَبَ لَنَا الْحَرْبَ
‘Then Talha and Al-Zubeyr stood and pledged allegiance to Ali-asws willingly, without abhorrence. Then they broke it and betrayed, and Ayesha went with them to Al-Basra (to fight against Ali-asws). Then Muawiya called the tyrants of the people of Syria to seeking the blood of Usman, and established the war to us-asws.
ثُمَّ خَالَفَهُ أَهْلُ حَرُورَاءَ عَلَى أَنْ يَحُكِّمَ كِتَابَ اللَّهِ وَ سُنَّةَ نَبِيِّهِ ص فَلَوْ كَانَا حَكَمَا بِمَا شُرِطَ عَلَيْهِمَا لَحَكَمَا أَنَّ عَلِيّاً أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ع فِي كِتَابِ اللَّهِ وَ عَلَى لِسَانِ نَبِيِّهِ ص وَ فِي سُنَّتِهِ فَخَالَفَهُ أَهْلُ النَّهْرَوَانِ وَ قَاتَلُوهُ
Then the people of Haroura opposed him-asws upon that the Book of Allah-azwj and the Sunnah of His-azwj Prophet-saww would decide. If they had both decide with what was stipulated upon them, they would have decided that Ali-asws is Ami Al-Momineen in the Book of Allah-azwj upon the tongue of His-azwj Prophet-saww, and in his-saww Sunnah. The people of Al-Naharwan opposed him-asws and they fought against him-asws’’.[1]
