Reasonableness, Kindness
يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا كُتِبَ عَلَيْكُمُ الْقِصَاصُ فِي الْقَتْلَى ۖ الْحُرُّ بِالْحُرِّ وَالْعَبْدُ بِالْعَبْدِ وَالْأُنْثَىٰ بِالْأُنْثَىٰ ۚ فَمَنْ عُفِيَ لَهُ مِنْ أَخِيهِ شَيْءٌ فَاتِّبَاعٌ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ وَأَدَاءٌ إِلَيْهِ بِإِحْسَانٍ ۗ ذَٰلِكَ تَخْفِيفٌ مِنْ رَبِّكُمْ وَرَحْمَةٌ ۗ فَمَنِ اعْتَدَىٰ بَعْدَ ذَٰلِكَ فَلَهُ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ {178}
O you those who are believing! The retaliation is Prescribed upon you regarding the murdered – the free with the free, and the slave with the slave, and the female with the female. But the one who has pardon for him from his brother with something, so he should pursue it with ‘بِالْمَعْرُوفِ’ the reasonableness, and pay to him with goodness. That is a Lightening from your Lord and a Mercy. So the one who exceeds after that, for him would be a painful Punishment [2:178]
وَ قَالَ ع إِنَّمَا يُؤْمَرُ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ وَ يُنْهَى عَنِ الْمُنْكَرِ مُؤْمِنٌ فَيَتَّعِظُ أَوْ جَاهِلٌ فَيَتَعَلَّمُ فَأَمَّا صَاحِبُ سَوْطٍ وَ سَيْفٍ فَلَا.
And he-asws (Imam Ali-asws Ibn Abi Talib-asws) said: ‘But rather instruct a Momin with the act of ‘بِالْمَعْرُوفِ’ kindness and forbid from the evil so he will take preaching, or (if) he is ignorant, he will learn. As for owner of the whip and sword, so no!’.[1]
