15th of Shaban Amaal (worship)

عَلِيُّ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ رَفَعَهُ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ إِذَا كَانَ النِّصْفُ مِنْ شَعْبَانَ فَصَلِّ أَرْبَعَ رَكَعَاتٍ تَقْرَأُ فِي كُلِّ رَكْعَةٍ الْحَمْدَ وَ قُلْ هُوَ اللَّهُ أَحَدٌ مِائَةَ مَرَّةٍ فَإِذَا فَرَغْتَ فَقُلِ

Ali Bin Muhammad, raising it,

(It has been narrated) from Abu Abdullah^-asws having said: ‘Whenever it is from the middle (15^th) of Shabaan, so pray four Rak’at of Salāt (two Rak’at and two Rak’at), reciting in each Rak’at Al-Hamd (Chapter 1) and ‘قُلْ هُوَ اللَّهُ أَحَدٌ’ (Sura) Say He Allah is One (Chapter 112) one hundred (100) times, So, when you are free, say,

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي إِلَيْكَ فَقِيرٌ وَ إِنِّي عَائِذٌ بِكَ وَ مِنْكَ خَائِفٌ وَ بِكَ مُسْتَجِيرٌ رَبِّ لَا تُبَدِّلِ اسْمِي رَبِّ لَا تُغَيِّرْ جِسْمِي رَبِّ لَا تُجْهِدْ بَلَائِي أَعُوذُ بِعَفْوِكَ مِنْ عِقَابِكَ وَ أَعُوذُ بِرِضَاكَ مِنْ سَخَطِكَ وَ أَعُوذُ بِرَحْمَتِكَ مِنْ عَذَابِكَ وَ أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْكَ جَلَّ ثَنَاؤُكَ أَنْتَ كَمَا أَثْنَيْتَ عَلَى نَفْسِكَ وَ فَوْقَ مَا يَقُولُ الْقَائِلُونَ

‘O Allah^-azwj! I am needy to You^-azwj, and I seek Refuge with You^-azwj, and fearful from You^-azwj, and Sanctuary with You^-azwj. Lord^-azwj! Do not Change my name. Lord^-azwj! Do not Change my body. Lord^-azwj! Do not Overload my afflictions. I seek Refuge with Your^-azwj Pardon; and I seek Refuge with Your^‑azwj Pleasure from Your^-azwj Wrath; and I seek Refuge with Your^-azwj Mercy from Your^-azwj Punishment; and I seek Refuge with You^-azwj from You^‑azwj. Majestic is Your^-azwj Praise. You^-azwj are just as You^-azwj Praised Yourself^-azwj, and above what the speakers are saying’.[1]

Ziyarah of Imam Hussain^-asws on the (Eve of)15^th of Shaban:

حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي وَ عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ وَ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ ره جَمِيعاً عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ هَاشِمٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ بَعْضِ أَصْحَابِهِ عَنْ هَارُونَ بْنِ خَارِجَةَ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع قَالَ: إِذَا كَانَ النِّصْفُ مِنْ شَعْبَانَ نَادَى مُنَادٍ مِنَ الْأُفُقِ الْأَعْلَى زَائِرِي الْحُسَيْنِ ع ارْجِعُوا مَغْفُوراً لَكُمْ ثَوَابُكُمْ عَلَى اللَّهِ رَبِّكُمْ وَ مُحَمَّدٍ نَبِيِّكُمْ.

Imam Sadiq^-asws said: On fifteenth Shaban, an announcer announces from the highest horizon: O visitors of Imam Hussain^-asws, return forgiven and your rewards will be given by Allah^-azwj, your Lord and by Muhammad^-saww, your Prophet.[2]

حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي رَحِمَهُ اللَّهُ وَ جَمَاعَةُ مَشَايِخِي عَنْ سَعْدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ الزَّيْتُونِيِّ وَ غَيْرِهِ عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ هِلَالٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ أَبِي عُمَيْرٍ ره عَنْ حَمَّادِ بْنِ عُثْمَانَ عَنْ أَبِي بَصِيرٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع وَ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ مَحْبُوبٍ عَنْ أَبِي حَمْزَةَ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْحُسَيْنِ ع قَالا قَالا مَنْ أَحَبَّ أَنْ يُصَافِحَهُ مِائَةُ أَلْفِ نَبِيٍّ وَ أَرْبَعَةٌ وَ عِشْرُونَ أَلْفَ نَبِيٍّ فَلْيَزُرْ قَبْرَ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ ع فِي النِّصْفِ مِنْ شَعْبَانَ فَإِنَّ أَرْوَاحَ النَّبِيِّينَ ع يَسْتَأْذِنُونَ اللَّهَ فِي زِيَارَتِهِ فَيُؤْذَنُ لَهُمْ مِنْهُمْ خَمْسَةٌ أُولُوا الْعَزْمِ مِنَ الرُّسُلِ‏ قُلْنَا مَنْ هُمْ قَالَ نُوحٌ وَ إِبْرَاهِيمُ وَ مُوسَى وَ عِيسَى وَ مُحَمَّدٌ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِمْ أَجْمَعِينَ قُلْنَا لَهُ مَا مَعْنَى أُولِي الْعَزْمِ قَالَ بُعِثُوا إِلَى شَرْقِ الْأَرْضِ وَ غَرْبِهَا جِنِّهَا وَ إِنْسِهَا.

Imam Sajjad^-asws said: One who would like a hundred and twenty-four thousand prophets^-as to shake hands with him, should perform the Ziyarat of the Imam Husain^-asws on fifteenth Shaban; because the souls of the Prophets^‑as, including the five Ulul Azm messengers^-as, ask permission from Allah^-azwj for his Ziyarat and they will be granted it.

We asked, “Who are the five Ulul Azm (Prophets^-as)?” Imam^-asws replied, “Nuh^‑as, Ibrahim^-as, Musa^-as, Isa^-as and Muhammad^-saww.” We asked, “What does Ulul Azm mean?” Imam^-asws replied, “Prophets sent to all jinns and mankind.”[3]

حَدَّثَنِي جَمَاعَةُ مَشَايِخِي عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ يَحْيَى الْعَطَّارِ عَنِ الْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ أَبِي سَارَةَ الْمَدَائِنِيِّ عَنْ يَعْقُوبَ بْنِ يَزِيدَ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي عُمَيْرٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ الْحَجَّاجِ أَوْ غَيْرِهِ اسْمُهُ الْحُسَيْنُ قَالَ قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع‏ مَنْ زَارَ قَبْرَ الْحُسَيْنِ ع لَيْلَةً مِنْ ثَلَاثِ لَيَالٍ غَفَرَ اللَّهُ لَهُ مَا تَقَدَّمَ مِنْ ذَنْبِهِ وَ مَا تَأَخَّرَ قَالَ قُلْتُ أَيَّ اللَّيَالِي جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ قَالَ لَيْلَةَ الْفِطْرِ وَ لَيْلَةَ الْأَضْحَى وَ لَيْلَةَ النِّصْفِ مِنْ شَعْبَانَ.

Imam Sadiq^-asws said: Allah will forgive all the past and future sins of one who performs the Ziyarat of Imam Husain^-asws on one of the three eves. I asked, “May I be sacrificed on you, what are the three eves?” Imam^-asws replied, “Eve of Eidul fitr, eve of Eidul Adha and eve of fifteenth Shaban.”[4]

سَالِمُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع قَالَ: مَنْ بَاتَ لَيْلَةَ النِّصْفِ مِنْ شَعْبَانَ بِأَرْضِ كَرْبَلَاءَ فَقَرَأَ أَلْفَ مَرَّةٍ قُلْ هُوَ اللَّهُ أَحَدٌ وَ يَسْتَغْفِرُ اللَّهَ أَلْفَ مَرَّةٍ وَ يَحْمَدُ اللَّهَ أَلْفَ مَرَّةٍ ثُمَّ يَقُومُ فَيُصَلِّي أَرْبَعَ رَكَعَاتٍ يَقْرَأُ فِي كُلِّ رَكْعَةٍ أَلْفَ مَرَّةٍ آيَةَ الْكُرْسِيِّ وَكَّلَ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى بِهِ مَلَكَيْنِ يَحْفَظَانِهِ مِنْ كُلِّ سُوءٍ وَ مِنْ شَرِّ كُلِّ شَيْطَانٍ وَ سُلْطَانٍ وَ يَكْتُبَانِ لَهُ حَسَنَاتِهِ وَ لَا تُكْتَبُ عَلَيْهِ سَيِّئَةٌ وَ يَسْتَغْفِرَانِ لَهُ مَا دَامَا مَعَهُ [مَا شَاءَ اللَّهُ‏].

Imam Sadiq^-asws said: Allah^-azwj will appoint two angels on one who spends the eve of fifteenth Shaban in Kerbala and who do the following:

Recite Surah Tauhid a thousand times, seek forgiveness from Allah a thousand times, praise Allah a thousand times and then perform four Rakats prayer reciting Ayatul Kursi a thousand times in each Rakat after Surah Hamd. The two angels will protect him from any harm and from all the evil of every Shaitan and every ruler. They will only record their good deeds and no sin will be recorded for him. The two angels will continuously seek forgiveness for him as long as they are with them.[5]

حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ يَعْقُوبَ بْنِ إِسْحَاقَ بْنِ عَمَّارٍ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ عَلِيِّ بْنِ فَضَّالٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْوَلِيدِ عَنْ يُونُسَ بْنِ يَعْقُوبَ قَالَ قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع‏ يَا يُونُسُ لَيْلَةَ النِّصْفِ مِنْ شَعْبَانَ يَغْفِرُ اللَّهُ لِكُلِّ مَنْ زَارَ الْحُسَيْنَ ع مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ مَا تَقَدَّمَ مِنْ ذُنُوبِهِمْ وَ مَا تَأَخَّرَ وَ قِيلَ لَهُمُ اسْتَقْبِلُوا الْعَمَلَ قَالَ قُلْتُ هَذَا كُلُّهُ لِمَنْ زَارَ الْحُسَيْنَ ع فِي النِّصْفِ مِنْ شَعْبَانَ فَقَالَ يَا يُونُسُ لَوْ أَخْبَرْتُ النَّاسَ بِمَا فِيهَا لِمَنْ زَارَ الْحُسَيْنَ ع‏

Imam Sadiq^-asws said: O Yunus, Allah will forgive all past and future sins of the believer who performs the Ziyarat of Imam Husain^-asws on the eve of fifteenth Shaban and he will be told, “Continue with good deeds.” I said, “All of this will be for one who performs the Ziyarat of Imam Husain^-asws on fifteenth Shaban?” Imam^-asws replied, “O Yunus, if I tell people about that which will be given to one who performs the Ziyarat of Imam Husain^-asws on this night, they would travel riding on a piece of wood placed on the back of saddleless camels to go to him.”[6]

مَا رُوِيَ عَنِ الصَّادِقِ ع‏ أَنَّهُ مَنْ قَلَّ عَلَيْهِ رِزْقُهُ أَوْ ضَاقَتْ عَلَيْهِ مَعِيشَتُهُ أَوْ كَانَتْ لَهُ حَاجَةٌ مُهِمَّةٌ مِنْ أَمْرِ دُنْيَاهُ وَ آخِرَتِهِ فَلْيَكْتُبْ فِي رُقْعَةٍ بَيْضَاءَ وَ يَطْرَحُهَا فِي الْمَاءِ الْجَارِي عِنْدَ طُلُوعِ الشَّمْسِ وَ تَكُونُ الْأَسْمَاءُ فِي سَطْرٍ وَاحِدٍ بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمنِ الرَّحِيمِ‏ الْمَلِكِ الْحَقِّ الْمُبِينِ مِنَ الْعَبْدِ الذَّلِيلِ إِلَى الْمَوْلَى الْجَلِيلِ سَلَامٌ‏ عَلَى‏ مُحَمَّدٍ وَ عَلِيٍ‏ وَ فَاطِمَةَ وَ الْحَسَنِ‏ وَ الْحُسَيْنِ وَ عَلِيٍّ وَ مُحَمَّدٍ وَ جَعْفَرٍ وَ مُوسَى وَ عَلِيٍّ وَ مُحَمَّدٍ وَ عَلِيٍّ وَ الْحَسَنِ وَ الْقَائِمِ سَيِّدِنَا وَ مَوْلَانَا صَلَوَاتُ اللَّهِ عَلَيْهِمْ أَجْمَعِينَ رَبِّ مَسَّنِيَ الضُّرُّ وَ الْخَوْفُ فَاكْشِفْ ضُرِّي وَ آمِنْ خَوْفِي بِحَقِّ مُحَمَّدٍ وَ آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ وَ أَسْأَلُكَ بِكُلِّ نَبِيٍّ وَ وَصِيٍّ وَ صِدِّيقٍ وَ شَهِيدٍ أَنْ تُصَلِّيَ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَ آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ يَا أَرْحَمَ الرَّاحِمِينَ اشْفَعُوا لِي يَا سَادَتِي بِالشَّأْنِ الَّذِي لَكُمْ عِنْدَ اللَّهِ فَإِنَّ لَكُمْ عِنْدَ اللَّهِ لَشَأْناً مِنَ الشَّأْنِ فَقَدْ مَسَّنِيَ الضُّرُّ يَا سَادَاتِي وَ اللَّهُ أَرْحَمُ الرَّاحِمِينَ فَافْعَلْ بِي يَا رَبِّ كَذَا وَ كَذَا.

It is narrated from Imam Abu-Abdullah^-asws: If one finds his livelihood is heavily curtailed, or is surrounded in severe hardship or is facing unsolvable difficulties or has special wishes for the hereafter, one should write on a white piece of paper (the supplication below) ensuring all the names (of Masomeen^-asws) are written in one line followed by one’s prayers. Place it, at sunrise, in a flowing stream of water (canal/river):

In the Name of Allah^-azwj, the most Beneficent, the most Merciful, the Lord of the universe and the Truthful(s).  I am Your^-azwj submissive slave and You^-azwj are my Grand Lord^-azwj. I send (through You^-azwj) ‘Salam’ (peace) to:

مُحَمَّدٍ وَ عَلِيٍ‏ وَ فَاطِمَةَ وَ الْحَسَنِ‏ وَ الْحُسَيْنِ وَ عَلِيٍّ وَ مُحَمَّدٍ وَ جَعْفَرٍ وَ مُوسَى وَ عَلِيٍّ وَ مُحَمَّدٍ وَ عَلِيٍّ وَ الْحَسَنِ وَ الْقَائِمِ

Mohamed^-saww, Ali^-asws, and Fatma^-asws, Al-Hassan^-asws, Al-Hussain^-asws and Ali^-asws and Mohamed^-asws, Jafar^-asws, and Musa^-asws and Ali^-asws, Mohamed^-asws and Ali^-asws and Al-Hassan^‑asws and Al-Qaim^-ajfj,

Who are our chiefs and masters, who are all Allah^-azwj‘s praise worthy and chosen ones^-asws.  My Lord^-azwj, please relieve me from fear, and help me from loss and damages, from what I see and from what I do not perceive.  For the sake of Mohammed^-saww and Alay Mohammed^-asws‘s Rights, for the sake of each Prophet^-as, Their successors’ behalf including the Truthful(s) and the Shaheeds. I pray to You^-azwj with reference to Mohamed^-saww and the Muhammad’s (Holy) Family^-asws, O! The Most Merciful^-azwj, I ask for Your^-azwj intercession, The Most Elevated and the most Praised Lord^-azwj, I have been disgraced by some affairs, difficulties have affected me, O my Lord, my Allah^‑azwj, the Most Merciful, please, award me O Allah^-azwj (do for me the) such and such (write your prayers and needs).[7]
