Questions of a Jew on Tauheed (Oneness of Allah)

Once, a Jew asked questions on Tauheed after the Prophet, but Muslims could not answer him, so they brought him to Imam Ali, who answered him.

يل، فض: بالاسناد يرفعه إلى أنس بن مالك قال: دخل يهودي في خلافة أبي بكر وقال: اريد خليفة رسول الله (صلى الله عليه وآله) فجاؤوا به إلى أبي بكر فقال له اليهود: أنت خليفة رسول الله (صلى الله عليه وآله) ؟ فقال: نعم أما تنظرني في مقامه ومحرابه ؟ ! فقال له: إن كنت كما تقول يا أبا بكر اريد أن أسألك عن أشياء قال: اسأل عما بدالك وما تريد

By the chain, raising it to Anas Bin Malik who said,

‘A Jew entered (Medina) during the Caliphate of Abu Bakr and said, ‘I want the Caliph of Rasool-Allah^-saww’. So, they came with him to Abu Bakr, and the Jew said to him, ‘Are you the Caliph of Rasool-Allah^-saww?’ He said, ‘Yes, do you not see me being in his^-saww place and his^-saww Prayer Niche?’ He said to him, ‘If you were just as you are saying, O Abu Bakr, I want to ask you about certain things’. He said, ‘Ask about whatever comes to you, and what do you want?’

فقال اليهودي: أخبرني عماليس لله، وعما ليس عند الله، وعما لا يعلمه الله فقال عند ذلك أبو بكر: هذه مسائل الزنادقة يا يهودي، فعند ذلك هم المسلمون بقتله، وكان فيمن حضر ابن عباس رضي الله عنه فزعق بالناس وقال: يا أبا بكر امهل في قتله قال له: أما سمعت ما قد تكلم به ؟ فقال ابن عباس: فإن كان جوابه عندكم وإلا فأخر جوه حيث شاء من الارض

The Jew said, ‘Inform me about what isn’t for Allah^-azwj, and about what isn’t with Allah^-azwj, and about what Allah^-azwj does not know’. At that, Abu Bakr said, ‘These are questions of the atheists, O Jew!’ At that, the Muslims thought of killing him, and among the ones present was Ibn Abbas, and he shouted at the people and said, ‘O Abu Bakr! Respite regarding his killing’. He said to him, ‘Did you not hear what he has spoken with?’ Ibn Abbas said, ‘If his answers were with you (then fine), or else throw him out wherever you so desire from the earth’.

قال: فأخرجوه وهو يقول: لعن الله قوما جلسوا في غير مراتبهم يريدون قتل النفس التي قدحرم الله بغير علم.

He said, ‘Then expel him’, and he was saying, ‘May Allah^-azwj Curse a people who are sitting it other than their ranks intending to kill the soul which Allah^-azwj has Prohibited, without (them) having any knowledge’.

قال: فخرج وهو يقول: أيها الناس ذهب الاسلام حتى لا يجيبون، اين رسول الله (صلى الله عليه وآله) ؟ وأين خليفة رسول الله ؟ قال: فتبعه ابن عباس وقال له: اذهب إلى عيبة علم النبوة إلى منزل علي ابن أبي طالب (عليه السلام)

He (the narrator) said, ‘He went out and he was saying, ‘O you people! Islam has gone to the extent that they are not answering me. Where is Rasool-Allah^-saww? And where is the Caliph of Rasool-Allah^-saww?’ Ibn Abbas followed him and said to him, ‘Go to the vault of knowledge the Prophet-hood to the house of Ali^-asws Bin Abu Talib^-asws’.

قال فعند ذلك أقبل أبو بكر والمسلمون في طلب اليهودي فلحقوه في بعض الطريق فأخذوه وجاؤوا به إلى أمير المؤمنين علي بن أبي طالب (عليه السلام) فأستأذنوا عليه ثم دخلوا عليه وقد ازدحم الناس، قوم يبكون، وقوم يضحكون.

He (the narrator) said, ‘During that, Abu Bakr and the Muslims came seeking the Jew and they met him in one of the streets, so they seized him and came with him to Amir Al-Momineen Ali^-asws Bin Abu Talib^-asws. They sought permission to see him^-asws, then they entered to be with him^-asws, and the people had crowded, a group weeping and a group laughing.

قال: فقال أبو بكر: يا أبا الحسن إن هذا اليهودي سألني عن مسألة من مسائل الزنادقة. فقال الامام (عليه السلام): ما تقول يا يهودي ؟ فقال اليهودي: أسأل وتفعل بي مثل ما فعل بي هؤلاء. قال: وأي شئ أرادوا يفعلون بك ؟ قال: أرادوا أن يذهبوا بدمي فقال الامام (عليه السلام): دع هذا واسأل عما شئت. فقال: سؤالي لا يعلمه إلا نبي أو وصي نبي. قال: اسأل عما بدالك.

He (the narrator) said, ‘Abu Bakr said, ‘O Abu Al-Hassan^-asws! This Jew asked me certain question from the questions of the atheists’. The Imam^-asws said: ‘What are you saying, O Jew?’ The Jew said, ‘I ask and you^-asws will deal with me like what they have done with me’. He^-asws said: ‘And which thing did they intend to be doing with you?’ He said, ‘They wanted to take away my blood’. The Imam^-asws said: ‘Leave this one and let him ask about whatever he likes to’. He said, ‘My questions are such, none would know it except a Prophet^-as or a successor^-as of a Prophet^-as’. He^-asws said: ‘Ask about whatever comes to you’.

فقال اليهودي: أجبني عما ليس لله، وعما ليس عند الله، وعما لا يعلمه الله. فقال له علي (عليه السلام): على شرط يا أخا اليهود. قال: وما الشرط ؟ قال: تقول معي قولا عدلا مخلصا: لا إله إلا الله، محمد رسول الله. فقال: نعم يا مولاي.

The Jew said, ‘Answer me about what isn’t for Allah^-azwj, and about what isn’t with Allah^-azwj, and about what Allah^-azwj does not know’. Ali^-asws said to him: ‘Upon a condition, O Jewish brother’. He said, ‘And what is the condition?’ He^-asws said: ‘You will be saying along with me^-asws, a just, sincere word, ‘There is no god except Allah^-azwj, Muhammad^-saww is a Rasool^-saww of Allah^-azwj’’. He said, ‘Yes, of my master, (how can I not say so)’.

فقال (عليه السلام): يا أخا اليهود أما قولك: ما ليس لله فليس لله صاحبة ولاولد. قال: صدقت يا مولاي. وأما قولك: ما ليس عند الله فليس عند الله الظلم. قال: صدقت يا مولاي. وأما قولك: ما ليس يعلمه الله فإن الله لا يعلم أن له شريكا ولا وزيرا وهو على كل شئ قدير.

He^-asws said: ‘O Jew brother! As for your words, ‘What isn’t for Allah^-azwj’ (it is) a female companion nor a son’. He said, ‘You^-asws speak the truth my master’. (He^-asws said): ‘And as for your words, ‘What isn’t with Allah^-azwj’, so there isn’t any injustice with Allah^-azwj’. He said, ‘You^-asws speak the truth, O my master’. (He^-asws said): ‘And as for your words, ‘What Allah^-azwj does not know’, so Allah^-azwj does not Know that there is any associate for Him^-azwj, nor any Vizier, and He^-azwj is Able upon all things’.

فعند ذلك قال: مد يدك فأنا أشهد أن لا إله إلا الله، وأن محمدا (صلى الله عليه وآله) رسول الله، وأنك خليفته حقا ووصيه ووارث علمه، فجزاك الله عن الاسلام خيرا.

During that, he said, ‘Extend your^-asws hand, for I testify that there is no god except Allah^-azwj, and that Muhammad^-saww is a Rasool^-saww of Allah^-azwj, and you^-asws are his^-saww Caliph truly and his^-saww successor, and inheritor of his^-saww knowledge. May Allah^-azwj Recompense you^-asws goodly on behalf of Islam’.

قال: فضج الناس عند ذلك. فقال أبو بكر: يا كاشف الكربات يا علي أنت فارج الهم.

He (the narrator) said, ‘The people clamoured at that, so Abu Bakr said, ‘O remover of the anguish, O Ali^-asws, you^-asws are the reliever of the worries’.

قال: فعند ذلك خرج أبو بكر ورقى المنبر وقال: أقيلوني أقيلوني أقيلوني، لست بخير كم وعلي فيكم. قال: فخرج إليه عمر وقال: أمسك يا أبا بكر عن هذا الكلام فقد ارتضيناك لا نفسنا، ثم أنزله عن المنبر فاخبر بذلك أمير المؤمنين (عليه السلام)

He (the narrator) said, ‘During that, Abu Bakr went out and ascended the Pulpit and said, ‘They fired me! They fired me! You (Muslims) aren’t with goodness while Ali^-asws is among you all’. Umar came to him and said, ‘Withhold, O Abu Bakr, from this speech, for we are pleased with you for ourselves’. Then he descended him from the Pulpit, and Amir Al-Momineen^-asws came to know that’’.[1]
